Middle-aged Dummies are back and bursting at the "themes" to get going! Full theme ahead! (4 Viewers)

I definitely need to send this in. I went down a big, weird rabbit hole last night and added 12 new artists to my research pile and 4 more to the Theme31. I will make the cuts needed and add one to make my official last 5 out.

@krista4 - when sending the links, it's just this in a PM for each track:

Chocolate Rain - Tay Zonday
I feel like I need to hit you with a tranquilizer dart. Do you ever slow down?

Songs in D#Minor. The saddest key of all. A personal selection

All songs will have a link stating that the song is in D#Minor.
If 6 other sites say it is eg F# Major, not my problem

Some very good songs in D#Minor will not make my list.
It’s a personal selection. Not the best 31 songs in D#Minor

If someone has knowledge of scales and can read, write and record musical with full notation and descriptions and you would like to challenge a song being categorised as D#Minor…….heres what we will do. You will state your case…in full detail. Not “Thats G#Major”. A full detailed explanation of why it is not D#Minor with an explanation that would satisfy 6 Conductors of major philharmonic orchestras.
Please PM the results of your thesis to shuke. I will then have a look on shukes say so. And probably, but not definitely carry on with my list as planned.
Sounds pretty sus :nerd:

Spotify stores a track's key in metadata that you can reveal using tools such as Exportify or Musicstax. There are two attributes KEY and MODE. KEY assign one of twelve possible values (0 through 11) corresponding to standard pitch classes e.g. 0=C, 1=C# and so on. MODE is a binary variable where 1=major and 0=minor. So a track in D# minor would be KEY=3, mode=0.

I have no idea how it handles songs with a key change in the middle or how accurate the data is but it correctly identified Bach's piano concerto in D minor as being in D minor (the first two movements at least).

For what it's worth, only one of the 31 songs in my Single(Named) Ladies playlist is in D# minor.

Thanks for that
Unless i have access to this data i will stick to my current method.
I know there are a few spotify playlists that have d minor tracks. Some quite lengthy.
If yiu do have this metadata, let me know where i can access it

As for key changes, i domt want to complicate it further lol

@krista4 Can I submit my list and then provide a playlist with the songs in the same order which shows the version I want or would that be a pain in the *** and you’d prefer to just link the songs in the text list?

To be clear I’d submit the list in your format and then send you a Spotify playlist in the same order with the versions of the songs I want.

Brilliant intro. I've never watched Mad Men - will that affect my enjoyment of your countdown? (You've now convinced me I need to watch it, though.)
What?!?!?!?!?!?

I've never watched it either
Nor I.

Bet I know every song, though. (I'm old.)
Same.
And same on old. I’m guessing I’ll know 66%.
I watched Ep.1 last night!
It's a great show. Don Draper is one of the best TV characters in recent years.

I loved how they worked all of the major events of that time into the shows storyline and just how different of a world it was (drinking at work, how they treated the women, etc.) - it’s like a time capsule in many ways.

Don't want to derail this thread by going on about the show, so I'll just say I hope you liked it and it whetted your appetite for more.

Fun fact for you: Don's girlfriend, Midge, is married IRL to Office Space star Ron Livingston.

On a side note, if you ever played L.A. Noire, you may start to have flashbacks, as many of the supporting characters in Mad Men made appearances in that game, including the actor who plays Ken Cosgrove as the lead character in the game.

I have seen some episodes, just never continued and finished the show. I forget how fantastically acted this show is and how many character moments each one gets. You know who all these people are after 1 episode (and if you are like me, you dislike almost all of them).

Do we need to revive the Mad Men thread? I'm always ready to discuss the show but don't want to blow up this thread on this rabbit hole.

For sure, I won't keep posting on, especially after we kick into music mode soon with playlists. We have been talking more about cutting some of our streamers, but the couple add-ons we have with Prime are good bang for the buck, so I went through last night to see what was on AMC+/Paramount. Your post had Mad Men on my mind, and at the very least wanted a few episodes of refresher to put some context to your picks and posts.

I always shy away from them this much after a show ended for fear of spoilers. Not so much themes and twists, as I think I know a few of those through pop culture. More the details and character moments that take away the punch of some episodes.

Sure, no problem. Thanks for asking.

Which middle aged dummy is responsible for getting Not Coping by The Clowns in my orbit? No, this is not intended to foreshadow the funeral play list. Although I suspect big brother's algorithm played a role in getting this on today's shuffle :tinfoilhat:

Regardless, thank you

Drat... Seeing this late.

Was going to do NYC themed songs- but see that's taken!

I'll try to think of something and get back or will just follow along

ETA... I have something in mind.. need to make sure I can scrape up 31 songs for it

I've use Exportify to create CSV files of my playlists that contain all the available Spotify attributes. The documentation I've found explaining the metadata isn't the best but it's interesting to me to see the raw data that the algorithm uses :nerd:

Musicstax works on a track-by-track basic rather than playlists. It provides less information but in an easier to understand format, e.g. actual key rather than the integer values.

Metal songs from 1988-1992 that became the gateway into the world of music for a young Yambag

My metal journey started in 6th grade with a very vivid memory. A classmate brought his Walkman into school and was telling everyone they had to listen to this song. During recess that day, I put on his headphones, and what I heard blew my mind. It was Twisted Sister’s Stay Hungry. I remember checking out the cassette cover and thinking how badass Dee Snider was. I went home and asked my parents if they could buy that album for me, and of course, they said, "Nah, doesn’t sound like stuff we want you to listen to."

A few months later, a young Yambag was in middle school, fully entrenched in that awkward phase of trying to find an identity. One day, his neighborhood best friend said, "You gotta check out this new band; they kick ***." He was gracious enough to let me borrow his brand-new copy of Appetite for Destruction. I was hooked again and used to listen to it on my Walkman every night while in bed. I didn’t want to give it back, but my friend let me borrow another cassette so he could have his GnR back. This album was Iron Maiden’s Live After Death.

After listening endlessly, I just knew that metal was for me. With money from my first part-time job, my friend and I would ask our parents to take us to the local independent record store, where we would scour the metal section and buy a few albums each visit. Album after album, we consumed as much as possible, both looking for the next heaviest, fastest stuff we could find. I spent years entrenched in this genre, refusing anything less than heavy, until I finally expanded my musical tastes in college.

With all that being said, my list of 31 songs really jump-started my love of music. I still listen to many of these to this day and love the nostalgia they bring. This list will be in alphabetical order by artist and cover many sub-genres of metal, for better or worse for the listeners. I used the 5-year span of 1988-1992, as that seemed to contain just about everything I wanted. There are a few artists where I would have preferred a different song but they missed the cut due to my arbitrary timeline. I’ll make sure to include those in the artist write-ups.

Good luck everyone!

I imagine telling them "you're an SMF" wouldn't have gone over well.

Some participants from prior M-aD countdowns who haven't committed to this one, but could be interested? This might be less intimidating than the Zegras countdowns since you don't have to listen to a full catalog from an artist. We'd love to see you!

@Doug B

I actually never saw this when it was first posted. Weird.

EDIT: Hmmm ... not in my alerts at all, even now as I look through.

Thanks for the invite ... timing is really bad for me. I'll have to sit this one out. Appreciate the thought, though :-)

I really appreciate your help here.
I did download some files and under the key tab they just have a number.
That number would correspond to a key, but i havent figured out the number for D#Minor is yet. I think its 1

Anyway, that led me to a rabbit hole where people on reddit were discussing this in way too much detail for my stupid brain to comprehend. Essentially spotify has a 33% accuracy rate for identifying the correct key. The worst algorithm for identifying stuff.
The musicstax seems to be the best and i have identified another couple that do this.

Essentially im back where i started, if a site says a song is D#Minor thats what im riding with. I will like the identificatiom

Thanks. Im really in over my head here lol.
The alleged 33% accuracy makes me question trusting it as a source though.
There is a huge playlist of D#Minor songs that I exported and not a single song has Key 3 and mode 0.
Loads of Key 2, Mode 0 and Key 5 and Mode 1. Among others

KEY=5/MODE=1 would be F major which is the relative major for D# minor but that's about the extent of my music theory knowledge.

I know enough to be a step above ignorant from my brief time noodling on guitar.

Finally thought of a good theme, so I am in.

A hobby of mine is higher end audio gear. Audiophile I suppose, but without the snobbery. If all we're listening to is your Sonos speaker, I'm good. But once we get into my mancave/office, and you sit in the sweet spot and just listen, I promise it's a different experience. You begin to hear stuff you never heard, and the seperation of the instruments and vocalists and how they all contribute to the song is astonishing. If we share a little smoke, all the better!

So my list is 31 songs that sound great on a decent 2-channel system.

If you have a nice setup, you probably have some of these on a playlist somewhere to demo your system, as some of these on my (thought-about-but-yet-to-be-compiled) list are well-known to demo speakers. But many are my choice - something that made me say "oh nice" and put it on my "speakers" playlist. I tend to appreciate lots of genres, so this won't be a bunch of snobby smooth jazz/etc. Even metal or a 70's one-hit-wonder can sound intricate and unique on a good system. Hopefully I create a good "speaker demo" playlist here.
Better be some Queen here. Also Kansas and Boston.

(We are Telarc fans, so we feel you.)

(Not literally.)

Sadly I think the only Boston track that might be eligible for my list is not even on the top five of the station in question, K-DST is strong

Honestly, for me, some don't work as far as the mix. I like Pet Sounds, but I recall being underwhelmed (critical listening-wise) when I bought a new vinyl copy about two years ago. I'll give it another go tonight though - I might have been expecting too much. I also did get a new amp and speakers since then.

For harmonies and such, I like mixes/songs where I can hear all the individual voices/instruments, placed in different spots - that's special. If they are all coming at me from one side or all mashed together in the center, it's still a good song, but not anything to write home about. I can listen to my car stereo or a bluetooth speaker for that.

I'll probably make a few posts about this / audio gear / listening / etc prior to starting that'll give a better idea of my thought process. In writeups, I'll try and post one thing I like about each song that makes it good (to me) on a good system.

@Mrs. Rannous - good chance something will make it out of those three. I have some nice JBL's, which are known for being good heavy rock speakers. Gonna pull out some Boston tonight as well and crank it up.

If you were doing classical music, we would be all over this like green on peas. Mr R used to use a Telarc sampler disc to sell sound systems and to vet the ones we got. We are major audiophiles.

As nerdy as we are as a collective group, this music theory thing is going to bring it to 11.
I will actually be sitting out of those discussions because I know f@ck-all about what key is what.

Brian Wilson is deaf in his right ear so his music is lighter on stereo effects than a lot of music of that period.

It's an interesting theme that should provoke discussion about what different people consider most important when they listen.
