Middle-aged Dummies are back and bursting at the "themes" to get going! Full theme ahead! (1 Viewer)

Thanks. Im really in over my head here lol.
The alleged 33% accuracy makes me question trusting it as a source though.
There is a huge playlist of D#Minor songs that I exported and not a single song has Key 3 and mode 0.
Loads of Key 2, Mode 0 and Key 5 and Mode 1. Among others

KEY=5/MODE=1 would be F major which is the relative major for D# minor but that's about the extent of my music theory knowledge.
As nerdy as we are as a collective group, this music theory thing is going to bring it to 11.
I think I have understood about 3 words of their series of messages.
Same, was going to ask for a translation.

Spotify attaches all kinds of mysterious attributes to audio tracks in order to drive their algorithm, two of the fields KEY & MODE identify the musical key that is predominant in the song. The key is the set of tonal notes and chords that are at the foundation of the composition.

Metal songs from 1988-1992 that became the gateway into the world of music for a young Yambag

My metal journey started in 6th grade with a very vivid memory. A classmate brought his Walkman into school and was telling everyone they had to listen to this song. During recess that day, I put on his headphones, and what I heard blew my mind. It was Twisted Sister’s Stay Hungry. I remember checking out the cassette cover and thinking how badass Dee Snider was. I went home and asked my parents if they could buy that album for me, and of course, they said, "Nah, doesn’t sound like stuff we want you to listen to."

A few months later, a young Yambag was in middle school, fully entrenched in that awkward phase of trying to find an identity. One day, his neighborhood best friend said, "You gotta check out this new band; they kick ***." He was gracious enough to let me borrow his brand-new copy of Appetite for Destruction. I was hooked again and used to listen to it on my Walkman every night while in bed. I didn’t want to give it back, but my friend let me borrow another cassette so he could have his GnR back. This album was Iron Maiden’s Live After Death.

After listening endlessly, I just knew that metal was for me. With money from my first part-time job, my friend and I would ask our parents to take us to the local independent record store, where we would scour the metal section and buy a few albums each visit. Album after album, we consumed as much as possible, both looking for the next heaviest, fastest stuff we could find. I spent years entrenched in this genre, refusing anything less than heavy, until I finally expanded my musical tastes in college.

With all that being said, my list of 31 songs really jump-started my love of music. I still listen to many of these to this day and love the nostalgia they bring. This list will be in alphabetical order by artist and cover many sub-genres of metal, for better or worse for the listeners. I used the 5-year span of 1988-1992, as that seemed to contain just about everything I wanted. There are a few artists where I would have preferred a different song but they missed the cut due to my arbitrary timeline. I’ll make sure to include those in the artist write-ups.

Good luck everyone!
This one I will be in sync with for sure. Very similar time frames and albums swirling around the KP walkman. I think my time frame is a little eariler, but was slower to catch on and quicker to diverge from metal in the 90s. My main entry was Iron Maiden after seeing the poster in my drummer partner's older brother's room when we met at her house for practice. That was my main source of metal for the first couple years along with 4 live albums that were played on a loop (Live After Death being one, of course). We didn't have much money, so I tried to get the most bang for my $ with live albums. Then, as with you Appetite hit and the following year was the next most important as I think about albums with 3 all-time favorites coming that year. This is your theme, so no more listing of titles, but I have a feeling we were digging into a lot of the same stuff. I might try to throw a quick list together to compare at the end.

VERY much looking forward to this one. 🎧 :headbang:
My metal journey started in 80-81 and was just about all I listened to until the early 90's so I should also be familiar with your playlist.

Same beginning for me, although I largely shifted away from metal in the mid ‘80s. Still will likely recognize a lot from that ‘88-92 era though and also looking forward.

If I were to start commenting on YouTube and that was the link I commented on, I'd have exactly one post because YouTube would ban me.

"The Mozart of the 20th century"? Good Lord......

Loving some of these themes. Great stuff. On this page alone we’ve got audiophile, mallet, and Grand Theft Auto radio stations.

Well done and very creative.

I am especially looking forward to driving my rig on the audiophile portion of the proceedings. Hope it sounds good with headphones.

Not too late to join...

Just submitted the Superheroes countdown, with links. This was mainly to stop me from continuing to change my list.

I look forward to every single list here, but I have to tell you all...Yo Mama's list is going to be hard to beat. I'm already :lmao: trying to imagine his write-ups.
My list is in. Mine may be the oddest thing ever, and that's saying something. Let me know if I did it correctly. (I may sacrifice a bucket of chicken.)

Umlauts require a lot of formatting. I'm exhausted.

Awesome! I’m cracking up just looking at my playlist on Spotify and imagining an Inept Hall of Justice with all these characters.

I'm trying to imagine the expressions on everyone's faces for some of this stuff. It should be epic.

I want to see if the Stones’ candidate makes the list.
They have quite a few superhero sounding songs titles - Monkey Man, Street Fighting Man,Factory Girl, Jumping Jack Flash,Sister Morphine and probably some others.

I'm kinda hoping for Brown-Eyed Girl by Morrison. Is her power her eye color, or is it something more unmentionable?

Sorry, Brown Eyed Girl was on my last 5-10 out (couldn’t figure out a good PG-13 writeup for her).

Monkey Man by the Stones was on my big list, but I figured his powers would be too strong for my squad so he was an early cut.

It seems like every countdown, someone finds a way to pick 21st Century Schizoid Man. Looks like you’re our best hope here.

There are versions that could make Falguy or KarmaPolice's list.

Went through two more after I got back from the pub. V-Rock (Vice City, take a wild guess) was generally solid, but kind of lacking in tracks that I really wanted to include in the long list. If I end up short then I guess this may be somewhere I revisit, but it's just got the automatic 31 berth and then three more as of right now.

Then I jumped ahead to K-DST (classic rock) from San Andreas, and jesus, this is so, so strong. I've got 9 tracks I want to include in the 100. And whoever I mentioned Boston in upthread, it is not one of the nine, it's not even close. That's how strong that playlist is. The track I have bottom is by Bowie, that's how strong it is.

How many Batman songs? Hes mine 🤬
As inept of a superhero that a rich vigilante with a fancy belt is, Batman did not make my list. Your theme selection was the inspiration to my theme though.
Just because he likes the company of “boy” proteges in **** Grayson aka Robin. And they live together, wear tight leather clothing and are the subject of the age old joke “Whats that you are putting in my mouth Batman” does not imply that Batman may be gay.

For the reason @Yo Mama listed, I submitted my list and official last 5 out to krista. I have to stop tinkering and waffling about which songs to put in.

I will post a couple jazzy bonus picks. My 31 has some answers as to what I have found I like in genres I don't operate a lot in or didn't like I liked much - hip hop, reggae, and punk. I've also been slowly dabbling in jazz to figure that out for the genre as well. While there is some jazz mixed into a bit of the prog I like, here are a couple artists and sounds I've really dug over the last couple months. I just haven't dug in enough to want to include them on the main list, but thought I would throw them out here...

Charade - Johnny Hartman

Lush Life - Johnny Hartman and John Coltrane

A Night In Tunisia - McCoy Tyner

I was finally allowed access to football guys. My theme is Animal Kingdom. The songs had to have an animal in the name or as the subject of the song. I also only picked songs I knew already - no Google or Spotify searches. Only 1 song per artist. I'm looking forward to hearing everyone's lists!

Mrs. KP's cat looks part Sphynx, Siamese, and bat. It's a bat cat in a groovy outfit.

Finally thought of a good theme, so I am in.

A hobby of mine is higher end audio gear. Audiophile I suppose, but without the snobbery. If all we're listening to is your Sonos speaker, I'm good. But once we get into my mancave/office, and you sit in the sweet spot and just listen, I promise it's a different experience. You begin to hear stuff you never heard, and the separation of the instruments and vocalists and how they all contribute to the song is astonishing. If we share a little smoke, all the better!

So my list is 31 songs that sound great on a decent 2-channel system.

If you have a nice setup, you probably have some of these on a playlist somewhere to demo your system, as some of these on my (thought-about-but-yet-to-be-compiled) list are well-known to demo speakers. But many are my choice - something that made me say "oh nice" and put it on my "speakers" playlist. I tend to appreciate lots of genres, so this won't be a bunch of snobby smooth jazz/etc. Even metal or a 70's one-hit-wonder can sound intricate and unique on a good system. Hopefully I create a good "speaker demo" playlist here.
Better be some Queen here. Also Kansas and Boston.
I wouldn’t be opposed to a bit of Pet Sounds either.

I did give Pet Sounds another shot. The harmonies are nice, but in terms of engineering, on a decent system it sounds just like the radio - just louder and clearer. There's no depth there. It's definitely missing that audiophile magic.

To be fair, most pre-70's music is like this. Stereo was still pretty new, and positioning sounds in the mix wasn't really a thing. Plus, most folks listened to either the radio or a one-speaker phonograph, which influenced how it was engineered (a big, flat wall of sound). There will be a couple of 60's entries on the list (two in particular jump to mind), but most will be from 70's-on.

Research says that I've posted on FBG exactly once since the MAD cover band thread in April 2024, but this seems like something worthy of ending my "retirement."

In honor of fulfilling a decades-long dream of seeing Oasis in their hometown this upcoming August, I'll go with 31 songs by Manchester artists. Take that you scousers.*

*The band Take That, though considered to be Mancunian, will not be among the 31.

Welcome, MrsKP! I hope the animals that inhabit this place are hospitable. Looking forward to the list.
