Middle-aged Dummies are back and bursting at the "themes" to get going! Full theme ahead! (1 Viewer)

So far there is going to be A LOT of new-to-me music this round
That’s one of the two best reasons for these countdowns imo. Artists like Ryan star have become main stays on my Pandora stations.

The other being reminiscing about music we loved as kids - like Mellencamp, Lennox ,buffet, etc.
Great to see this as the dummy who put together Ryan's list. So far, I have been listening to the 31 lists from Lord Huron, Airborne Toxic Event and Pretty Reckless pretty regularly. And I have a separate playlist of random songs that really catch my ear while listening to the playlists which has been great as well.

Since there is a lot of dislike for him as a person around here, I assume no one has chosen Eric Clapton for a MAD countdown before. If true, I will take him in the next countdown.

Unless the dislike is strong enough that the group would prefer I pick another artist.
I like it. You doing everything or just solo work?

If it holds, I will cover everything but it will have more solo work than bands. I’m sure I have more than 300 songs (including live concerts) in my computer library to choose from.
If someone is known to have strong anti Eric Clapton posts I would consider PMing them.
I mean other musicians, some already covered, have done much worse.
What did Eric Clapton do on a personal level that would make people not like him?

I thought he was “hated” for his music like the Eagles are in these situations parts.

Yes, some of these bands being announced I’ve never even heard of.

He was extremely anti-vax to the point where he wrote a song about it.

He said some racially insensitive things in the '70s.

That's the extent of what I know.

Clapton has been in a few pretty good groups that I like but I'm not a huge fan of his solo stuff. I've seen some of his benefit concerts where he pulled in some really well regarded guest artists, so he doesn't seem to be hated in the industry.

Well the first one seems to be an opinion than many shared. I got vaccinated but have no issues with those that chose not to.

Second one could be bad but I don’t know what was said.

Guess this adds some perspective at least.

"Keep Britain White," among other things. Many of them are political so not a great idea to go into here.
Oh - I did not know about that one. That seems really odd given his affinity for the Blues.
The whole "Rock Against Racism" initiative that was started in the '70s? That was a reaction to Clapton's remarks.

Actually I do remember this but wasn’t it an anti-lockdown song not anti-vax?
Might have been.
He did record that song with Van Morrison and I don't see anyone hating on Van.

Personally I thought the lockdowns were wrong (but understood, did not complain and complied).

The racism I get, and there's no place for that. Like I said it's pretty shocking since he was so into the blues and really seemed to respect those old bluesmen, but you can't escape what's in print.

I just find it fascinating how certain acts seem to get downplayed here - for reasons I frankly don't get.

What did the Eagles do - sell poison milk to school children?

Van's been a surly old crank since before he was old. Clapton is an easier target because his support of Enoch Powell in the 70s was a bridge too far for many including myself. Plus Van singing on the single meant less of Clapton's voice.
I was unaware of the racial part - so in that respect I do get the hate.

I always thought it was a music thing like I believe it is with the Eagles (people think they're too "corporate rock"). I figured Clapton was "too bland" and I get that from his solo stuff. I really don't listen to him much outside of Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs which I count as one of my favorites. There's a lot of talent on that record though, not just EC.

For me with these artists, it's:

Clapton does have too much bland, suburban blues in his catalog but he's been doing it for 6 decades. Others have mentioned his stances on certain issues, so I won't go there. Layla..... is one of the great LPs of the 1970s.

Eagles' music is fine with me (except for most of The Long Run, which is awful and joyless). My issue with them is their constant whining that rock critics didn't consider them on par with the Beatles. It got old really quickly. They never seemed to be having fun and the more they tried to be taken seriously, the harder they got to like. U2 leans this way for me, too, though I get that it's a "me" thing.

I was the one who started the LCD conversation in regards to their newest song. As I said, I like some of their songs but that newest release is annoying AF.

So far there is going to be A LOT of new-to-me music this round. Even the "known" artists I probably could come up with a handful of songs for. I don't know much Otis, Eagles, or non-Cream Clapton.
Yes, some of these bands being announced I’ve never even heard of.
Honestly, that's been one of the positive points of the M-AD Countdowns for me. I mean, there have been plenty of bands I know and love (and have several albums from) on these lists. But there's also been a solid section of new discoveries. Not everything has "hit" of course, but at the same time I've found lots of new bands to enjoy.

Yes, I’ve found a bunch of new artists in these exercises.

I was never aware of Clapton's racism or anti-vax/lockdown stances before reading about them in this forum. I am not one who really follows news about entertainers, whether musicians, actors, or whatever else. For me, I don't equate liking their music, movies, etc. to liking them or endorsing their personal views.

As for Clapton having a lot of bland material, I suppose that is true to some degree, given he has a catalog that spans 60 years... but his guitar playing is elite on so many songs that I would have a hard time calling them bland. As for his singing, it has never bothered me. He doesn't have the greatest voice, but it works for me in most of his songs.

I was just guessing why people didn’t like Clapton (from a music perspective) when I used the phrase “bland”. I’m more of a fan of Cream and D&D than his solo work, but his solo work has plenty of great songs.

I didn’t realize people didn’t like his voice until these last few pages. I think it’s very good in certain songs and more than adequate in most settings. He sounded good live.

No, I pointed out before that her band had a song in the themes mix to @kupcho1 (I didn’t realize he was joking).

Other than just recently I hadn’t even heard of that band.

Yeah, I listen to two of their albums now and then - but remember when you shared that song and I was on your side on that one. If it makes the 31, I’ll follow the Thumber rule.
But in all seriousness it’s one of the artists I’m looking forward to.

Somebody is not reading your posts!! ;)

PBS has a new documentary on right now on their Independent Lens called We Want the Funk. It is on the history of funk. I texted Uruk, but he may be in bed. It repeats at 3 am. Anyway, they were just talking about James Brown. :fro:
Just turned it on in time for the Sly.
