Middle-aged Dummies are back and bursting at the "themes" to get going! Full theme ahead! (5 Viewers)

I mentioned it during the "themes" draft - I'll be doing City and Colour.
Is this an artist or a theme?.
Artist - she picked one of their songs in this theme draft.
I thought he was making a gentle poke at the name and how it could fit a theme. It would be funny if her next theme was Cities and Colors.

I was going to respond yes - artist, but the stage name is a bit of a "theme" or play on words of his real name.

Thinking about starting MAD artist, Round 5, next week. With lists due by Friday, May 9.
Caroline van der Leeuw for me please.

If we’re doubling I could add Old Dominion if we’re looking for some good new country. I could have my wife make the list, but she won’t be posting here 🤷‍♂️

I will be doing The Smashing Pumpkins, my favorite band from the college years (and beyond). Really looking forward to it!
👍 They were pretty good live last year.

The #2s!

Known Numbers:

Purple Rain - Prince
Stupid Girl - Garbage
Hold The Line - Toto
El Paso - Marty Robbins
Little Wing - Jimmy Hendrix
Living For The City - Stevie Wonder

Total Surprises

Slow Train - The Staple Sisters
The Road to Utopia - Utopia
Power - Little Mix
Above the World - Andy Summers
Busman’s Holiday - Allah-Las

Go Figure:
Let’s go with a couple of songs that silently ask, “what category is this” but also are/were very close to being placed above. So there’s Al Stewart’s saxy “Year of the Cat” paired with the acoustic cover of “Simple Man” from Shinedown.

New-to-me songs from #3 that caught my ear:

Eephus – Single (Named) Ladies

To Be Loved – Adele

simey – train songs

Jenny Dreamed of Trains - John Denver

Yambag – Metal songs from 1988-1992 that became the gateway into the world of music for a young Yambag

You Can't Bring Me Down - Suicidal Tendencies

Mrs. Rannous – umlauts

Schrei nach Leibe - Die Ärzte

KarmaPolice – songs from artists not on shuke’s list

All Across the Country - Atomic Rooster

Don Quixote – Afrobeat

Atwer Abroba (Spotify) - Ebo Taylor (Ghana)

falguy – songs by 31 different Canadian artists

A Criminal Mind - Gowan

Chaos34 - Post Surf Rock Surf Rockish (80s fwd)

Sure As Spring - La Luz

krista4 – Chicagoland

I Hate Chicago – Laura Jane Grace & the Devouring Mothers

The Waterboys with a concept album about Dennis Hopper

I gave this a listen this morning. Not exactly what I expected but ended up loving it by album’s end. It was so well done and felt “theatrical” in parts.
Yeah I was surprised by how good it is. Seems like kind of a questionable idea but it’s executed so well.

Since there is a lot of dislike for him as a person around here, I assume no one has chosen Eric Clapton for a MAD countdown before. If true, I will take him in the next countdown.

Unless the dislike is strong enough that the group would prefer I pick another artist.

I like it. You doing everything or just solo work?

I think I already mentioned it, but I’ll be doing The English Beat (and its Spawn). Between The English Beat, General Public, and Fine Young Cannibals, that gives me 8 total albums of content (with maybe a solo song or two), so hopefully nobody minds me doing a combo selection.
Saw all of them live... This should be fun

If it holds, I will cover everything but it will have more solo work than bands. I have more than 400 songs (including live concerts) in my computer library to choose from.

If someone is known to have strong anti Eric Clapton posts I would consider PMing them.
I mean other musicians, some already covered, have done much worse.

I bust on Clapton here sometimes but it's not like he's awful in a Billy Joel Way (hereafter described as "BJW" - take that how you want to). Most of it's me kidding around. When an artist has a 60 year career, there are bound to be empty calories in the catalog. Hell, legends I adore like Ray Charles and Johnny Cash had them. For me, when Clapton connected with me, he really connected. It'll be interesting to see how you sort through a discography that large.

awful in a Billy Joel Way
:bag: I kinda like his early to mid career works. 🤷‍♂️
 This is a "me" issue
Similar to my anti-REM issue? Really liked, then really not.

Or perhaps Radiohead? Never did, although there are a couple songs I like.
Probably  No one is ever gonna convince me to like that *******'s music. I could squint hard enough to like "Uptown Girl" if Hall & Oates did it. The rest can go straight into the dumpster.
