Selection for next artist countdown will be Ferry Corsten aka System F aka Moonman aka Albion aka half of Gouryella aka half of Veracocha aka remixer of basically everybody
Keep in mind my hazy memory. I remember someone posted the new single in a thread and there were a few comments about the quality of said song and LCD Soundsystem in general. That's all my silly emoji was about.

He said that if you gave him a casio keyboard that he could write those songs. I'm not being hyperbolic. IIRC, that's what he said about it. I may or may not have gotten in a fight with him.

I didn't agree with him either. I just remember being a little shocked by that. But to each their own and I'd listen to that Bread song to have him around again.

Yeah, such was my respect for him... I felt the same. But ultimately, electronica and that kind of music really wasn't his tempo.. so IMO, after our discussion about it, it showed me he really didn't get it. Imo, because any dope with a keyboard or computer can make the beats and sounds, it's that much more impressive when its done in a way that works as well as only a handful make it work... Like LCD.
Well, I'll be looking forward to seeing what you countdown. I don't know all of James Murphy's songs. I have one album of his and it's This Is Happening, which is really good but probably not his best.
I think I got what you were saying even if it seemed like it might be confusing after you stepped back and read it again. We concurred about the whole thing, I think.

Lots of people really like that album. I'm listening to "All My Friends" right now and I like it. Doesn't hurt that you're pretty much a New Yorker by now, and for some reason James Murphy and NYC are like bees to honey or peas and carrots.
You spend the first five years trying to get with the plan
And the next five years trying to be with your friends again

My favorite part about the artist countdowns has been discovering lesser known artists like Clapton and the Eagles.
It's in that spirit that I'm choosing Michael Head. He's been around for 40+ years as a member of The Pale Fountains and Shack and as a solo artist without ever leaving a mark on the charts. But he's persevered and is currently making the best music of his career in his early 60s.

It is interesting that he said that given how the band came to be.
Murphy was one of the founders of DFA Records. He heard a lot of demo tapes from young bands that were trying to trying to recreate the sounds of the '80s and said "I lived through the '80s, I know how to get those sounds and I can do it better than these losers." So he started LCD Soundsystem to do just that.
Not really, but James Murphy was in bands his whole life and was a producer and engineer. Mrs. R., to do that with equipment (create a loop, lay a drum track down, chop it, etc.) is so incredibly difficult that when I told a friend I was thinking about it he told me to get a guitar because the other stuff I wanted to do (use turntables and a drum machine) was much harder.

I have similar mental roadblocks with music, and that was always a strong bias with me and certain genres of music. For me part of the problem was I didn't and still don't understand it. Funny enough I think it's Radiohead that that helped chip away at that a lot as they incorporated different sounds into the music. Why give up "real" instruments for whatever the hell it was that Jonny or Thom were tinkering with??!! What helped me a lot was seeing it performed live and seeing the degree of difficulty some of that must take and the ear that is required in the first place to make it sound like music to me. LCD was similar - I liked them even more after watching a couple performances, especially the NYC farewell show.
I still have some weird biases with hip hop, such as not liking it when more than a few people are rapping. Like the above, what has helped is reading more and more about the art form and what goes into it. Now that the playlist is already done, I am digging even more into interviews with People Under the Stairs as they talk about their process and love of music in general. I still don't understand it much, but I have a lot more respect for what it takes to hear small nuggets of music and turn 20+ of those into a coherent beat to use for a song, and then to be able to lay any lyrics over that is another thing. All the random videos, interviews, and performances I've found as I've gotten more and more into the genre the last few years have helped a lot in my appreciation.

Looking forward to this one. I was at one point thinking Dean Wareham could be a good one here as an individual. I’m less familiar with his Luna stuff though.

Interesting .. I wouldn't think of them as controversial- they have a middle aged white guy rhythm heavy dance sound that's pretty specific and consistent, and definitely not for everybody. (Eta...I think singer songwriter Americana type fans probably won't like them- they're all hook and rhythm, and not exploring melodies and lyrics with standard blues/rock base)
But they appeal to a lot of post-punk geezers (like me) that fit our demographic... People who grew up liking krautrock, kraftwerk, and a lot of the directions postpunk bands like Gang of Four went after leaving punk/garage guitar heavy for more rhythm dance sounds that still kinda feel like garage... If that makes sense. It's not techno, but it's also not guitar driven.
For this next MAD round I'm going to shift gears from a band that dealt with global issues (The Clash) to one that deals primarily with those closer to home: relationships, alcoholism, love, chicks.
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you The Beautiful South.
I originally intended to do one like you fancy cats do. That is, pick an artist and cover several bands, solo stuff, etc. However, picking Paul Heaton (aka P.d. Heaton) was not a viable option given that Spotify, for reasons unknown, only has one song by The Housemartins. Is it a banger with an awesome video? Yes, yes it is.
But what I found as I revisited The Beautiful South over the last few days was that picking 31 won't be a problem for me; winnowing down the list to 31, however, that'll be tough.
I'll leave you with the one song Spotify allows ...
Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Unfortunately, the video quality is piss poor. It is almost 40 years old (sweet baby jesus, where does the time go? ). Watch if you'd like to see the dance styles (the 0:20 mark), especially for a young Norman Cook (aka Fatboy Slim) at the 2:00 mark.
So far there is going to be A LOT of new-to-me music this round. Even the "known" artists I probably could come up with a handful of songs for. I don't know much Otis, Eagles, or non-Cream Clapton.
I'm looking forward to that Smashing Pumpkin List! Since they are off the board I will go with another artist whose voice has been compared to coffee...bitter but addictive. I will go with Conor Oberst. It will include solo work as well as songs from his group projects Bright Eyes, Desaparecidos, Monsters of Folk, and Better Oblivion Community Center.
Aight Eephus. No Eagles. You want something new to you? Fine. A mysterious radio station recently started broadcasting from Randsburg CA about 15 minutes from me. Population about 15. Call sign KLFU. Reception from my place phenomenal. They call it Radio Mt. Lebanon - America's #1 Arabic Station. Bangers all day long. Live shows late at night are just fantastic. Some outrageous musicians playing instruments unknown. Lots of techno in the vibe. My newly discovered guilty pleasure. With a little effort I can come up with 30 worthy of our time. It's gonna take a bit more effort to isolate an artist, but a couple out of Egypt are worth a little research. Research I've been wanting to do.
Also, making a quick list of Eagles tunes made me quote Lebowski. I wanted Hotel California to be #31, but couldn't justify it. Oh well.
