Blake Bortles - Official Thread (1 Viewer)

For the love of god WHY would you want to put your promising future QB behind that offensive line?!?! No way in hell am I putting Bortles out there until the O-line discovers how to block. Ride Henne to an 0-16 season then use the #1 pick on a stud LT. Would be nice to grab another Tony Boselli in 2015.
what if they also suck next year? do you keep him on the bench then too and wait until they have a good line? Better QB play can make the line look better too. Also, the players on the line are human and if you don't believe in your QB and feel you have no chance it's going to impact your play. Henne is awful and everyone knows it...if Bortles can help the team more than Henne can they should play the better player.

Jaguars coach Gus Bradley named Blake Bortles the team's starter for the rest of the season in his post-game press conference Sunday.

Although Bortles threw two interceptions in the second half of Sunday's loss to Indianapolis, including a pick six, he did lead two touchdown drives and breathed life into Jacksonville's previously inept offense. Bortles finished 14-of-24 passing for 223 yards, two scores, and the two picks after taking over to start the third quarter. He added 30 yards on two scrambles. The Jags head to San Diego next. If Bortles plays well, he could appear on the QB1 streamer radar as soon as Week 5, when Jacksonville faces the Steelers' swiss cheese defense. He's worth grabbing in all two-quarterback leagues.

Blake Bortles will start vs. Chargers in Week 4

By Chris Wesseling

Around the NFL Writer

The Jacksonville Jaguars' offseason plan to redshirt No. 3 overall draft pick Blake Bortles for the entirety of his rookie year was ditched 10 quarters into the 2014 season.

Having been outscored 105-10 in eight quarters since halftime of the season opener, the reeling Jaguars kicked off the Bortles era in the second half of Sunday's 44-17 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

Coach Gus Bradley had little choice but to turn to his hotshot rookie after starter Chad Henne was sacked three times and managed just 33 yards in the first half against a Chuck Pagano defense lacking pass rushers.

It didn't take long for Bradley to be reminded that his porous offensive line has been the primary culprit in failing to move the chains this season.

Bortles' first three series ended with a punt, a field goal and an interception. He would have been spared the latter in favor of a safety had Bjoern Werner's strip sack not been nullified due to an illegal contact penalty.

Down 37-3, with the Colts going through the motions, Bortles finally sandwiched a pair of garbage-time touchdown drives around a pick-six to Greg Toler.

As uneven as Bortles' performance was, his obvious talent, edge and willingness to take chances down the field were enough for Bradley to announce the rookie will start at San Diego in Week 4.

"Blake, I thought did a nice job. He's going to learn now, he's going to learn," Bradley said after the game. "But he made some plays, he kept plays alive, he's got really good instincts, made some really good decisions and some good throws -- and then some of the throws that you saw, I'm sure he wishes he had back.

"But we'll learn through those, but I just love his mindset, I love the strength that he has. He is a tough, hard-nosed competitor, and he will attack. And I think the team felt that part of him. I think it's no coincidence that all of a sudden we blocked a little bit better, the receivers played a little bit better, you know, he has a way to uplift people and to uplift a team."

With an uninspiring Henne now holding a clipboard, the Jaguars should put a more entertaining and competitive product on the field. Just don't expect Bortles to turn the season around behind an offensive line that can't keep the quarterback upright.

Bumping this topic

We heard Gus Bradley's hesitation and frustration with the team after they got beat up by WAS. IND is coming off a brutal loss at home to the Eagles and a 7-point loss to DEN. I think Indy is going to bring it.

Say the final score is something like 38-10 Indy, is it possible Bortles gets a shot week after next? I think the Jags are 1 more disaster away from trying, anyone with me on this?

Pick him up and sit on him this weekend? Get him for free if the Jags implode?
This guy was on the money, good job man keep up the nice work

He could pile up some numbers. Aggressive down-field throwing is something he seems to excel in and also something his team's position will require him to do with frequency.

If you are currently rolling with Cam, Kap, Dalton, etc.; then Bortles has to be an option, no?

I'm trying to guess all of the excuses that will be made for Bortles in a few weeks when he flops. No more preseason games vs prevent defenses.

I am not expecting him to be Andrew Luck this season. But I am expecting to have some games where he makes a few plays. I am expecting nothing more than Bye week level play from him in 2014. Anything in the top 20ish for points for the rest of this season is fine by me (although I bet he has a few top 10 weeks in there sprinkled amongst some clunkers). I think he's probably at least looking at 2016 before I am counting on him to be a stud. He's got NO TE, RB and three rookie WRs. Anyone giving up on him in "a few weeks when he flops" is looking at him incorrectly.

His upside is Andrew Luck. I expect him to end up just below that level - right in the Russell Wilson/Matt Ryan area.

He's no Andrew Luck. He has Luck like size, good arm strength, but that's where the comparison ends. He'll be a forgotten man before he's someone you can count on weekly for FF like Wilson/Ryan. That's what I really mean by you'll see what I'm talking about in a few weeks. Top-20/bye fill-in sure. I don't see the point in chasing that though.

sidebar: It's hard to believe you could get rid of B. Gabbert and actually get worse as a team. The Jags managed to do so.

Nobody is saying he's a QB1 right now. In deep leagues he is a good backup and has a lot more upside than the Joe Flaccos of the world.

Here's a good article comparing the two.

Blackmon really hurt them as did the falloff of MJD. Can't fix everything at once.

LOL @ "forgotten man"... he's going nowhere. And as hideous as JAX's defense is, Bortles will have 60 minutes of garbage time every week. If he can't produce solid numbers immediately, shame on him.

I've got Stafford now so yeah I'm looking and Cousins is gone. Maybe the league will figure him out by week 6, but I'm taking a chance. Everyone laughed when I played Tebow and he got me through to the playoffs...Bortles has some scrambling ability bonus!

If by some miracle Blackmon cleans up his act and comes back next year, this WR corps is gonna be ridiculous. I'm drooling over the thought of Bortles in the gun, with Blackmon, Robinson, Lee and Shorts/Hurns spread out, and another pass-catcher in Denard in the backfield. Good luck with that, defenses.

as early as Nov 1 2014 apparently, but as you probably know there's nothing indicating he's ready to re-apply.
I'm not counting on him this year. In fact, the Jags drafting all of these WRs might mean we'll never see Blackmon in JAX again. I believe they have to wait until he's reinstated in order to trade him.

Rotoworld:

Jaguars.com's John Oehser expects the Jaguars to use "more read-option" now that Blake Bortles is the starting quarterback.

Bortles ran for 561 yards and 15 touchdowns in college, and had two rushes for 30 yards on read-option keeps in his NFL debut last week. Bortles' rushing ability mixed with his willingness to push the ball downfield gives him significant upside. He is own-able in most leagues, and could be on the QB1 streamer map this season.

Yea, if he can take shots down field, play from behind in games, AND get 30-50 yards on the ground per game? It doesn't matter if he throws 1-2 INT's in a game, he will still put up fantasy points

He doesn't seem to have a really strong arm and I don't think his accuracy is all that great. Worst of all is his slow release, which IMO is going to result in a lot of sacks, fumbles and INT's.

I'll give him that he has got the size and shows good leadership and pocket presence, but I don't understand him being considering a top 5 by nearly everyone.
Oof.

Encouraging. There was a lot to like. He made a few poor throws but he looked perfectly calm and confident in most of his throws. Playing in SD is not the easiest place to debut. It'll get better by the week.

Would like to see a more developed read-option package going forward.

Rotoworld:

Blake Bortles attempted just three passes of more than 15 yards in Sunday's loss at San Diego.

Bortles was in a tough spot for his first NFL start, so OC Jeff Fisch kept it simple. The No. 3 overall pick was asked to execute a ton of screens, hitches and short passes off bootlegs, which led to a strong 29-of-37 completion rate. But that's not really Bortles' game, as he's an aggressive downfield thrower and playmaker. Expect the chains to be taken off a bit in Week 5, when the Jags have a plus home matchup against a bad and banged up Steelers defense. Bortles will be a fine QB2 with a high floor thanks to his running ability.

Jacksonville Jaguars: Only seven of Blake Bortles 61 pass attempts have gone to the left side. That rate of 11.5% is the lowest in the league, and well below the league average of 21%.
