Bonds to sign with Tampa Bay? (1 Viewer)

Strange.....I don't know why TB would do that...
1. It would def make their team relevant2. A team many think could be solid would be that much better. May be compete for the WC?3. They do have a hole at DH and are lacking HR hitters.Move makes perfect sense IMO

Yeah but Bonds ain't exactly a clubhouse guy and with all the young talent trying to make a name for themselves and define this team; him being there could be more of a distraction. Plus, how much does he have left?

Yea, at first glance it seems odd considering they made it a point to move Delmon and Elijah this off-season for clubhouse reasons. Then they brought in guys like Floyd and Percival to add leadership and improve the atmosphere.

On the other hand, this tells me more than anything that the front office thinks it can actually compete and win this year.

I hate this argument. It could work exactly the opposite. Young guys could learn plate discipline just from watching Bonds. The negative publicity surrounding him could actually HELP the young players by keeping the focus off of them--so they can just relax and play.Clubhouse continuity is completely overrated in baseball. You don't need to work together to win in this sport.

Yeah but what do they have to lose? This isnt a playoff team without him.

Heh? I don't think so...

BLB would be a pretty big upgrade from Jonny Gomes, but the Devils have a bigger need for Clemens than Bonds.

Knowing this where do you rank Bonds on your draft board? How much risk are you willing to take that he ends up on a roster?

Obviously Bonds has issues in the clubhouse, but he reamains an unbelievable offensive player. He would really help that offense out alot. Even playing 100 games.

This would be a great move for the Rays, assuming they get Barry for a reasonable price.

And how funny will it be for the greatest offensive player of all time to spend his last couple years dwelling in the very definition of MLB obscurity.

This is a perfect marriage.

Rays are going to be far better than the Padres over the next 5 years. Far, far, faaaaaar better.

I hate the guy but there's no question he would be perfect as the Yankees DH.
Good God, I would sooner burn my pinstriped jerseys and jump off the top of the Empire State Building before I ever supported the Yankees doing this.He would be the exact opposite of perfect as the Yankees DH.

No comments? I am in a 16 teamer right now, we start five OF, I have three right now and the best available are of the Adam Jones/Jack Cust/Jay Bruce/Nate McLouth/Felix Pie variety. Would like some opinions on where Bonds fits in that grouping.

Bonds will DH if he signs with an AL team.

He still has OF eligibility from standing around on the grass last year w/ the Jints.

Really? Huh. I guess I'll shut up about fantasy baseball.

 of course you do
:goodposting: If anything, it is an underrated aspect of baseball in the sabermetric circles. Most of those :nerd: s never really played the game, and they can't run some numbers on it, so they deem it irrelevant.

Bonds and Kent, 2 of the biggest cancers in baseball, were the best players on a very good Giants team for a number of years. I think chemistry helps but it's definitely not determinative of what type of team you'll have. Especially if you are only going to play the guy as a DH, he's just going to sit in the corner and take a few hacks every 3 innings.

I didn't say there weren't times where two ##### bags could co-exist on the same team and still win. You don't have to look any further than the Colorado Rockies last season to see what a team that is cohesive can produce. Of course Barry Bonds is a useful player, and his "bad influence" would be greatly diminished if he was a DH. My beef was with the notion that "You don't need to work together to win in this sport."

personally, i'd love to bonds go the rays.

it's been said that he's not good for the clubhouse, but i'm skeptical of this. the only people that say this are pantywaste reporters that have never played sports and jeff kent, who himself, is a noted ####head.

all i know is that wherever he's gone, he's played winning baseball. the pirates haven't been worth a #### since he left. the giants made the playoffs 4 times with him (they made the playoffs 2 times from 1971-1989).

it's amazing what kind of reputation you get when you don't like reporters.

the rays would be smart to bring this man in for a few reasons:

1-they have a ton of talented, undisciplined hitters. having the greatest hitter of a generation to watch can only help. if they can't learn to work a count by watching this guy, then they have no hope

2-who knows how much he has left, but last year he hit 28 HRs in 340 ABs, with ridiculous .480 OBP, and less than half the K's of most guys that hit 25+ HRs. i'm not sure what team couldn't use a guy that's either going to get on 1st base or hit a homerun much of the time and never strikeout.

3-it's possible he'd be even more productive not having to play in the field

4-he'll come at a discount, but whatever it costs will be a bargain when considering the revenue it'll create.

5-does anyone still think he can't perform with steroid allegations swirling around him? the pressure should be easing off anyway, now that the stupid public is starting to understand that barry lamar bonds wasn't the only one using them.

6-when GWB pardons clemens, he'll probably also have to pardon bonds to prevent himself from looking like a bigot

i see no downside and plenty of upside. let's do it.

I don't see this happening. They already have a log jam of outfielders and will need to have Baldelli DH at times as he recovers from injury. Bonds would have to split time at DH with Gomes and it puts the burden on Maddon who is trying to raise a young, talented team. Bonds not getting his way becomes dangerous in a clubhouse. It could be the same path the Bluejays went on with Hillenbrand.

How do you feel about Giambi as the Yankees DH?
He's a shell of his former self. Doesn't have the same bat speed. Doesn't have as much confidence. He's a platooning DH. What more needs to be said?

Does he have enough in the tank to play 120 games or so in the OF? If so, I'd love to see him close out with Pittsburgh....kind of a 'back to where it all began' sorta thing.

Clubhouse chemistry is impossible to measure and hard to predict. Some teams have thrived in chaos while others have gone down in flames.Bonds isn't going to turn into Sean Casey this winter. He's never been a great clubhouse presence and has had run-ins with multiple teammates over the years. But the baggage he'd bring with him would probably be a bigger factor than the man himself. A traveling circus of media will follow the Rays but focus on Bonds. That would be a giant distraction that could either unite or divide the clubhouse.

Bonds really needs to DH. Omar Vizquel should have OF eligibility this year for all the balls he had to handle in short LF.

Yup, just having a very hard time pulling the trigger. If I pick him and miss I'll be forced to start a Michaels/Delucci like platoon at my OF5, yikes.

And if he doesn't play again this year?

Scott Kazmir will go for an MRI on his left elbow this afternoon after feeling what "felt like a hyperextension" while warming up for Tuesday's intrasquad game.Kazmir said he did well on strengths tests performed by Rays trainers after the incident and was encouraged that he didn't feel any further pain in the elbow, which was covered by a blue sleeve as he prepared to leave. "It felt like it just jammed a little bit, like a hyperextension," he said.
:lmao:

On a somewhat related note, it's been reported in the past couple days that, if Tony LaRussa had his way, Bonds would be a Cardinal.

God, LaRussa is a freaking narcissist.

Then I'll have to roll the dice with a platoon like I mentioned earlier. I passed on him for now as Madden was quite persistent on Mike & Mike this morning the Rays hadn't discussed acquiring Bonds, but he is on my radar in a few rounds.
