BOSTON sports - How did we ever get so (1 Viewer)

Sounds like the dude got thrown out from reports.  Looks like fans and security intervened
The guy who threw peanuts at Jones was kicked out.  The people calling Jones the N word were given season tickets to the Patriots and a weekly show on WEEI.

How does one sit by someone doing this and not stop it?
:goodposting:

I'm a lifelong sox fan I would have spoken up. Hate that ####. Have experienced similar incidents in the bleachers when a group was harassing a young Yankee fan and his GF. Bought em beers to try to have them leave the stadium with the perception that not all Sox fans are dbags.

Every fan base has em... booze-fueled night games certainly bring them out more.

Always wanted to see a ballgame at Fenway and may get up to Boston this summer.  Is it reasonable to think that I can get 2 decent seats from somebody selling them outside the park?  Not looking to go to any particularly "popular" game.
Yeah plenty of scalpers. It's illegal so they're on the sly.. but basically anyone ASKING for tickets is usually selling them. Walk with 2 fingers in the air periodically yelling "I need 2!" and you'll get approached. Check high traffic routes from T Stop to Yawkey way and such.

Small but present risk of knockoffs. Less so for a non marquee game (ie Yankees sat night).. Seat Geek app is great too.

Better off using stubhub.

Who is is going to the game? Family or buddies? I can recommend seats based on who it is

Obviously a terrible incident and I hate that the extent of the punishment is kicking them out of the park.

but...how out of touch are these millionaire athletes?

"they need to fine them 10 grand, 20 grand, 30 grand. Something that really hurts somebody. Make them pay in full. And if they don’t, take it out of their check."  :lmao:
Why not give Jones the full context of his quote?  Pretty valid point about somebody throwing something on the field that could ruin his career.  Seems like you short changed him here...why?

That’s how you hurt somebody. You suspend them from the stadium, what does that mean? It’s a slap on the wrist. That guy needs to be confronted, and he needs to pay for what he’s done.

At the end of the day, when you throw an object onto the field of play, the player has no idea what it is. What if something hit me right in the eye and I can’t play baseball anymore. Then what? I just wear it? No.”

Mainly because the article I read didnt include that. In any case, I was referring to the racial slurs. From what I understand, the person who threw the peanuts was not caught.

Well, then if you didn't read the full quote, the article you read was not fair to Jones at all.  His suggestion for fines that you call 'out of touch' would be for people throwing things at the players.  He is absolutely right to want stringent deterrents for throwing objects at players and his reasoning is incredibly sound.

Class A felonies dont even get $30K fines. His comment is ridiculous and out of touch. I stick by that comment.

Get Pavilion Standing Room Tickets

This view

http://aviewfrommyseat.com/thumb/alwaysjoy-20120624162252.jpg

Tickets can be had for $30 each.  Don't pay more than $50

You'll have a shelf to put your beers down, absolutely no line for bathroom/snacks/beers, you get a breeze if it's a warm night (alternatively, a chill if cool night), you don't need to see a chiropractor/knee specialist the next day.  It's the best deal out there

EDIT TO ADD: MAKE SURE it is Pavilion.  Any other standing room is garbage, not worth the ticket it is printed on

While I think anyone throwing things on the field or yelling racial comments has NO place in the game or ballpark, It's not difficult to see why dbags with that predisposition would target him moreso than other players:

"Baseball is a white man's sport," the Orioles star told USA Today Sports.

"We already have two strikes against us already,'' Jones told the newspaper, "so you might as well not kick yourself out of the game. In football, you can't kick them out. You need those players. In baseball, they don't need us."
He has a point in that MLB has a lot of Whites, but barely over 50% of the league is white.... with a very large (30%) and rapidly growing segment being Latin players. His comments, while technically true, seem to imply some implied racism in the game, which numbers would indicate simply isn't there.

The low number of Black MLB players likely has a LOT more to due with a preference for the NBA/NFL. Certainly doesn't excuse the behavior, but likely explains why he may have been targeted.

I'd be intrigued to hear comments if JJ Reddick openly referred to the NBA as a "Black man's sport" in an interview.

Very glad the Red Sox, Mayor of Boston, and tons of Sox fans have spoken up against the losers who did this. Heckling is part of the game in Baseball.. but there are clear lines and this is way across them.

For me, throwing objects at players or other fans should be criminal offense. Using unacceptable language (as determined by???) should get you tossed out.

I Think that's fair. If you're throwing #### onto the field it needs to be more than a "haha buddy let's get you out of here" reaction.

Sabathia said in his big league career "I've never been called the N word" anywhere but in Boston

Sabathia said it's talked about among black major leaguers: "we know. There's 62 of us. We all know. When you go to Boston, expect it."

Not in the context in which he said it, no sir.  If his career ends because somebody throws something, what's that cost him?  A lot more than $30,000.  What's ridiculous is not giving Jones his full quote.  What article did you copy/paste from?  Curious why that article wouldn't give his full quote.  Can I have that link?

So now we apply punishments on what could have happened rather than what actually happened?

Side note: not that it matters in the overall discussion, but apparently the peanut thrower was caught.

Do you have that problem when somebody receives a harsh punishment for driving under the influence in cases where nothing actually happened?

I still want to see a link to the article you read where Jones was not quoted in full.  He's absolutely right - throwing anything on the field should carry a much harsher penalty than ejection from the game because even if nothing bad happened, it sure as hell could happen in the future.

I've already agreed that a harsher penalty should happen. 30k is out of touch.

As far as drunk driving.....not even close to a comparison, but whatever. Driving while drunk is against the law....just as is throwing peanuts at someone. Both have consequences. I'll look for the link later, but kiss my ### for thinking I made it up.

My city is as racist as it is cosmopolitan. Almost all of it comes from my people, the Irish or folks from their neighborhoods. The biggest joke in town when i was growing up was pointed at the amazing Bill Russell, who sought fights as seldom as he walked away from them, becoming my hero: "What do you call a black superstar?" "N------". Jim Rice got the same joke later. Virtually everywhere you go today, this day, the HVAC guy or security guard still feels comfortable walking into a well-peopled area and making junglebunny cracks similar to those my uncles did pre-1960. Tonight, for every public encomium of Adam Jones's dignity, there are a dozen bars filled with skinheaded, wallet-chained, black-shirted, long-goateed Irishmen toasting the Sawx fans who kept it real. Disgrace.

:lmao:

It was multiple people, Boston apologist.  Everything says "fans" and one report said as many as 30 got into it.

As I've said for a decade around here, terrible fans.  I'd never go to a game there, bunch of ####### jackasses.

Does that mean the cornhole is canceled?

BOSTON - Red Sox president Sam Kennedy issued a statement on Tuesday following an incident on Monday night at Fenway Park when Orioles outfielder Adam Jones received racist taunts from a fan.

"The Red Sox want to publicly apologize to Adam Jones and the entire Orioles organization for what occurred at Fenway Park Monday night," Kennedy said in the statement. "No player should have an object thrown at him on the playing field, nor be subjected to any kind of racism at Fenway Park. The Red Sox have zero tolerance for such inexcusable behavior, and our entire organization and our fans are sickened by the conduct of an ignorant few. Such conduct should be reported immediately to Red Sox security, and any spectator behaving in this manner forfeits his/her right to remain in the ballpark, and may be subject to further action. Our review of last night's events is ongoing."

Jones told reporters on Monday night after the game that he was berated with racial slurs and had a bag of peanuts thrown at him near the dugout. Fenway Park security ran the fan out of the park.

"A disrespectful fan threw a bag of peanuts at me,'' Jones said told USA Today's Bob Nightengale and the Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo. "I was called the N-word a handful of times tonight. Thanks. Pretty awesome.''

"It's unfortunate. Pathetic," Jones said. "What they need to do is instead of kicking people out of the stadium, they need to fine them 10 grand, 20 grand, 30 grand, and then make them pay in full and if they don't, take it out of their check. That's how you hurt somebody. Kicking them out of the stadium, what does that mean? It's a slap on the wrist. The guy needs to be confronted and needs to pay for what he does."

Feels like they short changed Jones the full quote.  Not that I would accuse a Boston based website to have an agenda or anything.

So embarrassed to be a Boston sports fan right now. Just...no excuse, and it seems to happen again and again. I didn't understand what I was commenting on when I commented on Capella and Dr. D's stuff last night.

Just shameful, and I mean that.

Well, look.....ALL fans can be an embarrassment at times.  I'm a lifelong Cowboys fan and it didn't hit me until I moved far away from Dallas how embarrassing Cowboy fan could truly be.  The racism is inexcusable, but boorish fan behavior is not proprietary to Boston.  Just a shame that a good guy like Jones was targeted.  Maybe this is a watershed moment for Boston fans and it marks an end to their fans being unabashed with their racist taunts.

That would certainly be nice.

I've been to Fenway quite a bit and never heard a single racist taunt (though have heard lots of taunts in general.

That said I have a couple buddies in the TN Air Guard who were in town and went to a Yankees game, and apparently one of the guys (who is a giant redneck and lives in BFE West Tenn, and everyone openly refers to him as "the redneck" of the squadron) was yelling the N word enough that he was threatened by security that he was going to be ejected. The other guy texted me a play by play and I was telling him to please get him to #### with that crap... but the Redneck would not be silenced. Thankfully security shut him down.

Yep, I get that. I'm just embarrassed to be part of fanbase that does this, racially, and with so much history going on. It's awful. I want nothing to do with it.

I love that the people of Boston gave Jones an ovation. That gives me hope. Nobody likes this ####. It's ####, pure and simple.

Mike Lupica had an article about the incident quoting what I believe to be the only fan that was at the game who has made a comment about it to the media. He was 15 rows back. He states it was a single drunken fan that was throwing the peanuts and racial taunts at Jones. To me, if this is accurate the biggest complaint I think you can lodge at Sox fans (plural) is that there were probably a 100+ fans that heard the racist taunts and didn't confront the idiot or inform security. I'm fairly surprised and disappointed no other fans stepped up to confront the guy or go to security. Typically people will confront someone for swearing (often time a parent there with kids) or other boorish behavior at the park that pales to what it sounds like occurred on Monday night.

One idiot doesn't represent a fan base.  If you think that because one loser is tossing out slurs the entire fan base is culpable.  Well I'm not sure what to say.  I also hate that the fans gave Jones an ovation.  I think the fact that someone (or possibly multiple people) shouted those things at him is terrible.  But you don't cheer on an opposing player.  Boston fans cheering on Gordon Hayward were embarrassing and this is too.  Just my opinion.
