Bourbon guys (3 Viewers)

Yep.  I'm Gold Key.  Been hearing the Vault story for close to a year.  Lots of negative history prior to that trying to get decent Bourbon out of ABC. I'm fine with the Vault program for the really high end stuff but it doesn't make sense for the more common items like 12 year and 107 especially sine ABC has the exclusive on that in FL.  Anyway, I finally got a Vault Key last Thursday.  Was thrilled to find Pappy 20 there and put it in my cart and began checkout process immediately. "Check Out Button" never completed action/loaded new page. No Pop up blocker but decided to try and open it to a new tab.  That worked.  Entered CC info.  Error.  Product not available.  Damn. Clear cart, go back to vault.  Pappy 20 still there. Rinse and repeat, can't checkout.  Try calling support. Goes to voicemail with full mailbox and no one answers on other menu options. Give up on Pappy 20.  See that they have WL Weller, Pappy 15, and Stagg.  Add WL Weller to cart and successfully check out.  Get confirmation email.  Yay.  Not happy about missing the Pappy 20 but I love WL Weller so all good. Ooops, 5 minutes later get an email that says it came from my local store cancelling my order for WL Weller because either they already sold it to someone else or my CC was declined. Call store. No idea what I'm talking about. Call CC company.  No decline.  No attempted charge. Try to get back into Vault but I've got my 1 bottle so no can do.  Try calling Guest Services again. Still no answer, still no vm option.  Email them and explain what's happened and ask them if the Weller sold out, please save me a Pappy 15 or Stagg.  Crickets.  I leave it alone until yesterday.  Yesterday I check my order status on abcfws.com with the original order number and it doesn't find the order at all.  Another email to Guest Services.  Crickets.

I've placed quite a few orders on their website in the past for local pickup and it's usually an adventure with lots of goofy inventory and processing issues that just aggravate the Hell out of me because I'm used to shopping on sites like Amazon where that just doesn't happen. But, I'm also not normally shopping allocated Bourbon where their mistakes screw me.  And then they have the nerve to ignore me.

So, yeah, Gold Key and the Vault really haven't worked out well for me at all.

BTW, while I was in the vault I noticed that they even have Buffalo Trace in there!!! Who on earth is going to waste their one bottle a year on Buffalo Trace???
Well, I think this message board must have been infiltrated by ABC spies. 👀 Just got an email from Guest Services responding to me and confirming that my order was not cancelled and I will hear from my local store when my WL Weller arrives for pickup. 🤞

Sweet, congrats

Did they have 1.75 in the vault or were they all .75?

Anyone else try New Riff?  The Total Wine store I go to had limited supply (aka 1 bottle per person per visit).  Tried it out and it's not too shabby.
That’s made in my hometown. I was part of the Ranger program and got to bottle my own single barrel bottle in addition to a big party o the release day. I think it’s pretty good, but priced a little high.

The OKI they had while waiting for the first run of New Riff to come of age was really good too.

This is the BTAC William Larue Weller Cask Strength.  I think it's only .75. I didn't look closely at the Weller 12, 107 or others than commonly come in 1.75.

The Weller 12 has become nearly impossible to find and when you do it has a huge markup.  I remember buying it for like 30 bucks and it was a steal back then though I don't think it is possible to find it at that price anymore.

The others on that list you can typically find pretty easily.
I know lame to quote yourself but with all the discussion on Weller I pulled out my Weller 12 tonight, which I haven't touched in awhile, and had a glass and it sure is a good bourbon.  Don't have a much left so don't drink it often given how hard it is to find now but it is damn good.

Walked into liquor store I sometimes frequent that has harder to find stuff. Mostly very high end scotches but they had a bottle of George T Stagg on the shelf. It set me back 500 but had to buy it since I was shocked me to see it in the wild.  High price but don’t see anything at that range out there on the internet so feel good about it.

Best bourbon I've ever had.

My buddy who is a bourbon snob sent me this article and it is a good read for bourbon drinkers.

There is a ton of $$$$ being made off of bourbon and this has crossed my mind before.  Terms like "Small Batch,Hand crafted, Special Reserve, Limited" are really just sales tools as there are no standards for those slogans.
MGP actually has some very good rye coming out of it.  They are a very high rye mash bill (95%) and great for using in cocktails that call for Rye like Manhattans and Old Fashions.  Personally use Bulliet Rye in those types of drinks.   Bourbon is too sweet for those drinks in my personal opinion.  However, Templeton is garbage as it is MGP rye with flavorings added.

I have never had Widow Jane but it was clear to me that was all marketing spin as soon as I first saw one of those bottles.

I work 3rd shift (10p-6:30a)  at my local Post Office. Off Saturday and Tuesday nights.

Been drinking JD for awhile now and listening to some Jimi Hendrix.  Will be in bed within an hour as I get more intoxicated

I hold my liquor well, but become much more talkative ( typative) when I drink

Enjoyed a Russell's 10 year reserve last weekend.  Pretty good!

A friend in Kentucky gave me a bottle of Angels Envy Finished Rye.  Going to save for Xmas vacation.  Also gave me a bottle of Willett XCF ECF.  Going to save that for....awhile.

Take yer JD talk over to the Tennessee Whiskey thread.  This here's the Bourbon thread.😋

You still live in NKY?  I'm in Ft. Thomas.  New Riff is a two-minute drive.  I was impressed by the bourbon, given how young the place is.

What's a good cheap-ish bourbon for cocktails? Leaning toward Wild Turkey 101 for a cranberry-based drink I'm tinkering with

101 is a good bourbon especially for the price/101 proof and if you like it I would pull the trigger.  Personally, I like bourbons that have a higher rye in mash bill for cocktails as you don't need as much sweetness as you adding with mixers.  Going that route I personally like Bulleit but a bit more expensive then 101.  Four roses yellow label is good as well and cheaper.  Agree, I don't think you should spend much money on something you are going to mix.

We've had a bottle of 101 at some past family gatherings and I mixed with cranberry juice cocktail (because, turkey and cranberries of course) with good results.  I saw the Four Roses mentioned in a Reddit thread as well, so I'll give that a look.  I'm also a high-rye fan.

Yep. Just a little past you in Crestview. I was glad they could convert those old buildings by the 12th street bridge to rickhouses.

Buffalo Trace

Eagle Rare

4 Roses

Bulleit

i think any of those are good enough to drink neat but not terribly expensive that you don’t mind mixing them

Finally got my email invite to the Vault and was somewhat disappointed in the selection, only about 20 bottles to select from and of the only true top shelf left were Pappy 10 and the William Larue Weller.

Settled on a bottle of Weller 12 and only cost me 32 bucks, seems somewhat like a waste considering what you have to spend to get gold key access.

Picked up some 1792 Small Batch to try out for the cheap weekend drinker rotation.  I'd rank it not badly, but definitely a notch or two below Buffalo Trace for the price point.  I really wanted Eagle Rare, which they usually have but were out of. Next time.

What’s the deal with this idea of putting some lemon in your bourbon? Twice in the last week or so I’ve been suggested this. Once by a bartender who seems to know her stuff and a coworker who I don’t know much about his cred.

I opened up a bottle of Eagle Rare tonight.

Decided I'd rather relax and enjoy it than sweat the MNF game and Michael Thomas with his magical football semi-final implications.

And guaranteed myself at least one Win.

was at a party saturday night. guy had a great selection of bourbons out for everyone. some random dude just starts taking shots of the blantons
This happened to me when I was doing a tasting for my BIL at my house last Christmas.  We were tasting the various ones I have and I was telling him about them.  I don't remember what we were currently tasting but my 21 year old nephew comes over and says, "Hey can I try some of that?".  Reluctantly I pour him some in a glass.  He shoots it like it is fireball.  "Damn uncle Tom!  That is smooth!".  Needless to say that was the last one he "tasted".

Opposite for me at my SIL's on Thanksgiving.  They have a tradition of everyone doing a shot of Fireball or something similar.  BIL had an airline bottle of Eagle Rare and offered that to me.  I spent a good 10-15 minutes on my "shot" that day.

Very tasty
Probably be my next bottle then.  Told FIL to get me bourbon for Xmas, not expecting anything good but we’ll see.  Basil Hayden’s is about half gone and I have some buffalo trace for cocktails so gonna need a bottle soon

also keep forgetting I have like a 50 year old handle of Canadian club in the basement  that I won in a white elephant last year

I love Trace and their whole line. My SIL works for their parent company and she moves a lot of bourbon. I like Basil a lot too even though it's a bit lighter than most modern bourbons. Not sure if dollar for dollar Bakers is on the level of Trace or Basil, but I do remember thinking it was a very nice bourbon.

Damn. Never did get my WLW.  Got a second invite a couple weeks later and it was gone so settled for a Stagg Sr.

How much $

That sucks, I have to say I was very disappointed in the contents of the "vault"

On a happier note just got a bottle of Knob Creek Single barrel Special Reserve as a Christmas Present, gonna have a fire this weekend and crack that bad boy open

The reserve has started to become more available here in FL.  I can usually walk into any ABC early in the week and get a bottle or even a 1.75
