Bourbon guys (4 Viewers)

OF SBBP Rye has dropped some - still haven’t found it myself but hoping it becomes as easy to find as the bourbon - it’s one of the best pours I’ve ever had.
I've only ever seen one of them for sale in my state, and I paid up for it. Best rye I've ever had.

It kills me when I watch these bourbon hunters on Youtube in KY or OH or wherever and they pass right by it on shelves because apparently it's as common as 1910 up there. I'd snatch another one up in a heartbeat if I could find it.

I only ever find the SBBS bourbon as a store pick, but it seems like several stores have gotten one in recently. I don't know if the rye is available to do a barrel pick, but that'd be awesome if so.

If you don't mind, how much did you pay?

I found one this week for $129.99 and I paid it. Already opened it and so happy with the purchase. Love it as much as batch 1. In fact, I may go back and get a backup.
Same as you, $129.99. I had some instant buyer's remorse but once I cracked it open that faded pretty quickly.
I can assure you these are not sitting on the shelves in Ohio with the 1910. However, when they do show up, and if you are willing to stand in a line, you will only pay $79.99.

I'm just not a big fan of higher wheat boubon. Larceny is no exception. I want to love them but just don't - it does help me since I don't bother hunting for any of the Wellers.
Are you me? I thought I was the only person that wasn't trying to assemble the Weller rainbow. If I come across an A107 or FP at a good price I'll pick it up but I always trade them. Larceny does nothing for me. I get looked at funny when I say I don't like Makers Mark.
I am a fan of many wheated bourbons, but I am not much of a Makers fan (although I do like the recent Heart release quite a bit). A107 is one of my favorite pours. While Ohio is fortunate to have a fairly steady supply of A107 and Special Reserve, you rarely ever see the rest of the lineup here...once in a blue moon in a special lottery or special drop in very limited quantities. My rainbow is currently missing the orange single barrel.

Buddy of mine said Sazerac decided on Georgia as a big drop place for BT and ER. But we rarely get EHT and other than Special Reserve we get very limited Weller line products - which is fine with me.

Last 2 weeks in Nashville and Louisville.

I'm a noob, so I am just building my base to establish where my tastes lie. This is start of my first real 'collection'.

Nashville
Michter's Single Barrel Straight Rye
Russel's 10 Yr Bourbon

Louisville
Buffalo Trace
Green River Wheated Bourbon
Jim Beam 7 Yr Black Label

Russels 10 is a staple in my house. I love it.

Filing this one away for when I'm low on ER. Usually have a stash of 107. As Galileo stated it's a fairly decent supply up here.

Go to 15:45. This is in Indiana, my bad on saying OH earlier. One of those midwest states, they're all the same :)

There's multiples of OF SBBS Rye on the shelf, and the comment made is "ehh, probably gonna be $99". I'd buy every one they'd let me if I could find it for that.

Tonight's stop on the journey: Epoch Maryland Straight Rye Whiskey (100 Proof, $45 Total Wine)

First thoughts: I only have myself to blame for not trying rye earlier in my 'journey', though I've been playing catch-up this year and may be overcorrecting my previous objections, because the more ryes I drink, the more I seem to prefer them to bourbon. Anyway, I recently noticed this bottle on my local shelves and having a low-key sense of state pride, I've wanted to give it a try. Per the label, it's pot-stilled, aged at least two years in charred American oak casks.

First sniff: From the bottle, it's not quite chocolate, but something sweet and dark with a hint of mint as well. In the glass, it gives the same kind of sweet 'baking spice' that I got from the Old Overholt 114, which makes me hope it sweetens as it sits as well.

First taste: Before I could get to the first sip, I spent another couple of minutes with the nose and picked up cherry cough syrup. The taste reminded me of a slightly refined Wild Turkey 101, with a slight burn on the end and the cherry lingered on the finish.

Second taste: After spending some more time nosing it, the second sip seemed more cherry forward than the first while still reminding me of Wild Turkey 101, and less burn on the back end.

Knee-jerk reaction: I'm going to have to do a blind with this and Wild Turkey 101, but regardless of that outcome, for as much as I liked the taste, I liked the nose more, a common occurrence for me with rye. I'm not calling the taste a disappointment by any stretch, I just wished the taste matched the pleasantness of the nose.

They also had Epoch's Cask Strength on the shelf for $4 more. Curiously, it comes in at the same proof as Sagamore's Cask Strength, 112.2, which drank like a much lower proof whiskey; therefore, Epoch Cask Strength is now on my radar too.

Missed out on another one (an OF SBBS Rye) this past Friday. There's a store about an hour from me where the owner likes to do random little drops, sometimes he'll post them on facebook and sometimes he'll just sit them on the shelf and wait for someone to find them. He's always done them at store open (10AM) in the past, so since it's been a little while since he'd done one, and I was in the area Friday morning I went by at 10AM to see if I could get lucky to kick off the holiday weekend.

He didn't do one that morning :( I walked in and he's just sitting behind the counter. We chatted a bit and I ended up picking up a bottle of Green River Full Proof and I left.

About 2 pm that day he posts a photo to facebook of some bottles out on the counter and said "just put out some goodies to kick off the weekend, FCFS". And of course, a beautiful green OF SBBS Rye right in the middle staring me in the face. If he'd done it at 10AM like he always did when I was the only person in the store I'd be posting a review of the bottle instead of this sad story...

Anyone tried the Yellowstone Limited Edition 2024?

Got to local Kroger a little later than usual, but was still only 8th in line. The drop was Blantons, Buffalo Trace, Makers wood finishing series, Remus repeal Reserve, Baby Saz, and the Yellowstone so I figured I'd be getting a consolation price of Remus or Makers (plenty good on Blantons).

First 5 all went Blantons, so I knew I could get a bottle. Older couple in front of me whom I've seen around and know their stuff each went yellowstone. I figured why not. Was talking to him on the way out and he stated that the yellowstone was really hard to find, and he was shocked it wasn't the first pick for everyone. At $125 + tax guessing the price tag scared a few away.

I don't know, he won't post prices on facebook but knowing him and how he prices other stuff I'm going to guess ~$129.99. About 2 months ago he posted a couple bottles of Michter's BS Rye on a Friday morning mini-drop (I live too far away so missed out on them also) and those were $134.99.

Not to rub it in but I’ve had a few pours now of the OF SBBP rye and it’s just as delicious as I remember. Thinking of going back and see if I can buy a backup.

There's a grocery store in downtown Covington called Aquistapace's. They have an outstanding liquor department and carry lots of hard to find stuff. Family owned place, and everyone who works in the liquor department is very helpful. You can call ahead and ask about any bottles. If they have any, they'll hold them for you, and if they don't they will try really hard to get it for you.

How much was he asking for it?
I don't know, he won't post prices on facebook but knowing him and how he prices other stuff I'm going to guess ~$129.99. About 2 months ago he posted a couple bottles of Michter's BS Rye on a Friday morning mini-drop (I live too far away so missed out on them also) and those were $134.99.

Not to rub it in but I’ve had a few pours now of the OF SBBP rye and it’s just as delicious as I remember. Thinking of going back and see if I can buy a backup.
I've been nursing the heck out of the one I have. I did find a store with a barrel pick of Jack Daniels SBBP Rye that's been a great fill-in. I think this weekend I'm going to blind them side by side along with Redwood Empire CS Emerald Giant. Was hoping to wait until I could find a Michters BS Rye and do a 4 way.

FOUND IT! Went back into that same store this morning. I pulled up the owners post from last week and just asked if he might still have any left and he said yes. $119.99 + tax and now I have a backup, which to me means fair game to finish the one I have open! Wooooohoooooo! I think I'm more stoked about this OF SBBS Rye than I'd be if I found a VW15, I freakin love this bottle!

Filing this one away for when I'm low on ER. Usually have a stash of 107. As Galileo stated it's a fairly decent supply up here.
If there's something I can get you in Wisconsin, I'd love to work a trade for a couple of those 107s.

I love wheaters. The new Bardstown High Wheat is so good that I had to go buy a backup right away. Also a big fan of "Screaming Titan" from Redwood Empire.

PM sent. Obviously enjoy wheaters as well.

I've been good lately and haven't done much hunting. The double score of the Yellowstone mentioned above did a number on the bourbon budget. Have a bardstown fusion series bottle which I enjoy, will keep an eye out for that wheater. Also a fan of Redwood Empire. If their both on the shelf and you can only grab one, which way are you going?

Well you'll rarely ever see the Titan on the shelf, as most places maybe got one 6-bottle case, so from that point of view, I'd grab the Titan. But the Bardstown is only $50 versus $80-90 for the Titan, so from a bang-for-your-buck standpoint, I'd go with the Bardstown. But really, you won't go wrong either way.

Speaking of Redwood, I know @AAABatteries and I both agree that as far as shelfers go, their Lost Monarch bourye is fantastic. The cask strength version is excellent, too, but obviously more expensive.

I'll keep an eye out for the titan. Local Kroger has been setting out a number different RE variations recently.

LOL, I have two bottles from Redwood, and they are those exact bottles. Might be because I read it umpteen pages back.

Haven't cracked the cask strength one yet, but the regular is one enjoyed.

After I posted about getting a backup my main store had four bottles in a case - also for $129.99. I bought a backup and it took my wife giving me the stink eye to not get a 3rd bottle. Also, feels like OF got enough good reception from batch 1 that it will be findable going forward. For $100-$130 I will always have a bottle of this on my shelf.

And I'm back with another stop on my journey: Rittenhouse Straight Rye Whiskey Bottled in Bond ($21.99, LAX Liquors, Beltsville, MD)

First thoughts: Earlier this year, I was able to sample Rittenhouse at a newly discovered gem of a store not far from my house. I remembered liking it but nothing specific, just that I would get a bottle when the opportunity presented itself. I've been scouting out places near me to find the best price for it, and just when I had settled on my local Total Wine, the honey hole of a store near my father's house beat them by $3. More about Rittenhouse: originally distilled in Pennsylvania and named for Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia, the brand was acquired by Heaven Hill in the 90's and distilled on their premises in Kentucky, it barely meets the definition of rye, containing just 51% rye to go with 35% corn and 14% barley. It is also alternatively described as either a Pennsylvania or Maryland-style rye.

First sniff: From the bottle, it has the giveaway rye 'spice' note but with something fruity and reminiscent of a nice highland scotch. From the glass, the fruity smell was overtaken by the traditional rye spice, and as I am wont to do with the ryes I've really liked, I went back to the nose several times before actually giving it a taste.

First taste: Similar to the last new to me rye I had, it reminds me of Wild Turkey 101 yet still a rye through and through. Very slight hug at the back of my mouth and the aftertaste is palpable but feint in taste, which I blame on the low rye content for a rye.

Second taste: In just the couple of moments of letting it sit in the glass, the nose and second taste both got a little sweeter but left an almost black licorice taste at the end.

Knee-jerk reaction: Good proof at the price and a prototypical rye nose, I'm nevertheless left wanting more rye in my rye. Still, I like it better than the basic Elijah Craig Small Batch rye, which cost a few dollars more and is lower proof, and the Sagamore basic rye, which is even more expensive. All things considered, like Heaven Hill's more famous bargain basement label, Evan Williams Bottled in Bond, I think it's a good bang for the buck and ultimately scratches the basic rye itch.

:hophead: :bye:

Rittenhouse is the perfect cocktail mixer to me because it's #1 a rye, #2 cheap, and #3 high enough proof to stand up to the sugar/syrup in an OF, and not overwhelmed by vermouth in a Manhattan. I found a store that regularly stocks it for $19.99, so I keep it and EW BiB on my bar at all times.

Rye guys, I've got a couple of bottles at home that I really have no interest in opening/drinking. Bought them while I was still trying to figure out my palate.

New Riff Single Barrel Rye (108.1 proof)
Willett Family Estate Rye 4 Yr (108.8)

If someone wants them, I'll do both bottles for $95, and maybe we can split the cost of shipping or something. LMK.

Yesterday I wandered into a favorite store of mine that I don't get to go to much (1 hr from my house). Found a couple cool things - didn't buy them all but cool to see nonetheless.
  1. The new 8 year Wild Turkey 101 - Jimmy Russell's 70th anniversary bottle. They had several cases, and the owner told me it was supposed to be a new regular shelfer so I figured I'd wait on it.
  2. Baker's 7 High Rye Bourbon. Didn't realize this new mashbill existed - I think it was $82 so no idea if that's a good price or not. I've found regular Baker's 7 to be a bit hit or miss (single barrel variance) so I tend to avoid these unless they're at/below MSRP.
  3. 1792 Single Barrel Store Pick. Around here the only 1792 picks I ever see are Full Proof...
  4. Makers Mark Heart Release. These have been out for a while but it was the first one I've seen in person. Not a big wheater fan so I tend to ignore Makers, but cool to see they're still out there.
  5. Owner told me he'd had and sold out of the 2024 Makers Mark Cellar Aged the week prior. I saw it on the shelf in this store last year but it was the week after Christmas. I asked him about that and he said this year was the earliest he'd ever gotten it.
  6. High West Cask Collection - Rum Finished. I've seen the chardonnay and the cabernet finished bottles dozens of times, but never seen the rum finished before. I was reaching for this bottle to purchase it because I've always loved rum finished stuff, but as I reached I then noticed another bottle....
  7. It was a Shenks, for $120. I've never seen it <$250, and it was sitting there all lonely on the shelf by itself, so I pounced.
  8. And right next to that Shenk's was an empty spot for Bombergers ($130). Another one I've never seen <$250. The owner had been chatting a bit with me, so after I grabbed the Shenks and headed for the counter I said something like "guess I was too slow for the Bombergers." He glances up at the shelf and says "oh I didn't realize it was empty. I've got another case in the back, you want one?"
Scored a Bombergers and a Shenks for $250 to kick off the fall allocation season (y) Can't wait to try these. Michter's does 90-100ish proof better than anybody.

Happy hunting folks!

I'm a big wheat guy

Recently tried the Bardstown High wheat. 106 proof, 6 year age statement. They're clearly trying to compete with Weller 107 (believed to be 6-8 years, 107 proof).

It's fantastic. Amazing mouth feel. Fantastic flavor. I'll take it over 107. I hope they plan to age some of the barrels even more. I'd love to see a 10/12/15 year.

54.99. That was the other reason I opted to wait, I'd seen a couple other stores that posted they'd gotten it and it was priced at 50 so looks like it was a wide release, and I could drive down the street and save 5 bucks.

Semi-tempted to have you grab me one. Not seeing it much around here.

That said, I hear it's not much different from regular WT101.

And I'm back with the next stop on the journey: Michter's Sour Mash Whiskey (86 proof, $39.99 on sale from $49.99, Allview Liquors, Ellicott City, MD)

First thoughts: I can't remember exactly how this got on my radar, but I know enough of the whiskey tubers I watch spoke well about it, so maybe there's some sort of peer pressure at work here. I do know, however, that I came to know about Allview Liquors from a fellow FBG. I took today off work to enjoy a four-day weekend and found myself with some free time to finally check it out. They had three different Michter's labels on sale for $39.99, but the Sour Mash was the one I wanted to try first, so here we are.

First sniff: It's a mix of bourbon and rye notes: brown sugar/caramel/vanilla of bourbon and a faint trace of 'rye spice'. Color me confused.

First taste: To me, it tastes like bourbon and rye at the same time and with a surprising little burn at the end.

Second sniff: At this point, it's been in my glass for almost 10 minutes and has gotten sweeter and more rye-like on the nose.

Second taste: Sweeter, no burn, still a muddling of bourbon and rye.

Knee-jerk reaction: It's not bad, though I prefer something much cheaper and higher proof: Evan Williams 1783 (~$20, 90 proof). I'm not disappointed exactly, but $39.99 feels like too much for this one. :hophead:

Still hasn't hit in western KY, which seems nuts, but here we are.

Had a day off work Thursday and woke up early anyway. buffalotracedaily.com was predicting Blanton’s for the daily allocated drop so I started the hour and a half drive to the gift shop since I don’t currently have a bottle. Halfway there the gift shop opened, the site refreshed, and it was Eagle Rare, which for my palate and pocketbook was better all round.

Left with an Eagle Rare ($40)and a Special Reserve ($30) they unexpectedly put out. Much better way to spend the morning than cleaning the basement like I had planned.

Amazing Prices for those!

Eagle Rare was the first Bourbon/whiskey I really liked the taste of by itself. A friend had a really nice New Year's party. He had Eagle Rare and had us all try it. Loved it. So smooth. So sweet. Just fantastic.

Used to see it for 30-40$ all of the time. Then people started to care about it. In the western end of KY, it's like 60-70$ all the time now, which seems nuts.

Scored a bottle of Russel's Reserve 15 year yesterday. Lives up to the hype. Every bit as good as the internet claims it is. It's one of the best bottles I've ever tasted.
That's awesome! I have still yet to even SEE a RR13 or RR15 let alone have a chance to purchase one of them. RR Single Barrel (and store picks) are my favorite daily drinker. The 13 & and now 15 have been on my radar bucket list for a very long time now. Congrats and enjoy your take home!!

(And yes we are in Division 008)

I see you up there at 6-0 big dawg. Congrats on the strong run. I started hot but fading the last few weeks haha. Hopefully the next few weeks go a little better.

I'm with you. RR Single Barrel is my favorite daily type bottle. Rare Breed is right there with it. I'm a huge turkey fan.

I've probably told this story in here before, but oh well:

Went to the distillery during Covid. Had to wear masks and the whole 9. There was this older gentleman just chilling at the gift shop, huge crowd around him. Couldn't tell at first, but as the crowd died down a bit, it was Jimmy Russell. I met him, shot the bull with him for a few minutes, and then asked if I could take a picture. He obliged. He went on to say we could take our masks off for it. He goes on to say...

Jimmy: "I already had my shots."

Me: "Oh, yeah?"

Jimmy: "Yup, had two shots this morning, probably have a couple more tonight."

Yeah, when they put it out at the distillery gift shop, it’s MSRP, but they usually only have one of either Weller S.R., Eagle Rare, Blantons, or EH Taylor Small Batch, along with regular Buffalo Trace and Sazerac Rye.

But you can only get 1 bottle of each flavor of the allocated stuff every 90 days.

I'm with you. RR Single Barrel is my favorite daily type bottle. Rare Breed is right there with it. I'm a huge turkey fan.

I've probably told this story in here before, but oh well:

That's an awesome story whether you've stated it previously or not. I am also a huge WT fan. I visited WT Distillery during COVID and they were not doing tours. I also went across the road to the gift store and shot the bull with a couple of old timers for quite a while as well. In fact it was a Sunday, and they let me in before they officially opened. Kentucky Spirit doesn't get a ton of public love, but I like it right behind the RR's and the Rare Breed stuff. There's not a whole lot better than trying whiskey's with those who've been around a long time and hearing what they have to say about anything and everything!!
