Boy CNN tried to make the Atlanta shootings all about race (1 Viewer)

The fact that he’s a murderer is despicable enough for me.

Also, with respect to prior comments in this thread, and as someone whose mom is Asian, being attracted to Asian women is perfectly fine. Fetishizing Asian women is yucky. There’s a difference. I’m not gonna get all judgy about it or anything, but just thought I’d mention it.
Agreed.  The issue here I wish that would be looked at is the trafficking and the living/"working" conditions for these women.  I think with our climate today we just go right past that for the headline that fits the narrative.  Right now racial politics is what works so it's what is discussed, looking at something like trafficking isn't sexy enough to get real attention.

My disagreeing is not the point. You claimed they were delighted. Show your work or don’t make such an awful accusation.
I didn’t say they were delighted people died, I said that they were delighted that two of the people that died were white. Read the thread, it speaks for itself.

Threads about mass killings used to be 90% t&p and other various messages of condolence. These two threads have one.

Sincere kudos to @Sand, one person acted like a caring human being.

Every single news outlet gobbling it up as a hate crime, National, Local. Unbelievable.

Real issues: Mental illness, prostitution, trafficking.  Hell, even throw in gun regulation if you want since he purchased it just prior.

Woke America completely missing the boat on this one.
Or maybe it’s the people taking a sociopath mass murderer at his word instead of recognizing obvious facts.

“But CNN” is no excuse. This thread and the other have shown zero sympathy for the death of eight people, just political garbage.

You tracked down the names of the non-asians to discredit CNN, because these lives mean nothing if you can’t whine about CNN.

Some of you really need to take a break from politics. You should be embarrassed by your behaviour.
:potkettle:

Honoring and reporting on those ignored by the MSM.

Or maybe it’s the people taking a sociopath mass murderer at his word instead of recognizing obvious facts.
Obvious facts like the white man and woman he murdered?  And the fact that the definition of racist doesnt include an obsession with getting rub and tugs from them on the regular?

Some of you need to go back and read through this thread
You're encouraging people to read the thread you dispise. You're advertising for the anti-CNN.

You arent in the mass shooting thread. You are in the CNN reporting on mass shooting thread. You keep zigging when you should have zagged.

I miss the old days when all mass shootings were heavily covered as they were a great opportunity to politicize the gun issue.  Today only the select mass shootings which assumingly have an anti-white racist component make the cut of stories we are suppose to care about.

True.  Biden wont touch the 2nd amendment and they know it.  His palms are greased.

Here we go. Making the move from "hate crime" to "white supremacy".

Its the left's and MSM's only playing card.

Keep ignoring mental illness, prostitution, human trafficking and yes, even gun control. White guy shoots and its racist white supremacy, full stop. They are out of control.

How about assuming the massage parlor was giving handjobs when there is no proof of them doing that, racist or no? Do you think all massage parlors do this?

Don’t care if you disagree. This thread is an astonishing low point.
Whatever. Don't have time for this either.  If it makes you feel better saying we don't care about the deaths, so be it.   Now I'd like to continue with the discussion please.  Thanks!

Eight people dead because of a nut with a gun.    But the important thing is the media is mischaracterizing it as a hate crime?

This place is unbelievable.
CNN.com top headline this morning   “White supremacy and hate haunt Asian Americans”

Seems like they are pushing a false narrative and not a mischaracterization. CNN is absolute garbage and worthy of discussion.

I guess they are ignoring all the black on Asian hate crimes that have happened lately. Gross

Or even more unbelievable, is the important thing is pointing out that people are pointing out the media is mischaracterizing it as a hate crime.

They are not completely ignoring it.  They are using the stats of blacks on Asian crime as proof of hate crimes against Asians are rising, blaming it on white supremacy while ignoring the fact on who is actually doing it.   Of course the NBA is weighing in heavily with their concern for Asian Lives Matter when it is a white perpetrator.  Of course pointing out how grossly politicize the reporting and concern from woke organizations/people are is racists and uncaring.  It is not the actual people politicizing death that are the problem, it is pointing out the ugliness of the woke culture which is the problem.

No kidding.  And yet Joe just keeps letting him post.  I get suspended for comments like that.
Stop. Just stop.

He posted their websites. They dont even hide it. I mean jesus. There are also things already written fully acknowledging it and even a piece criticizing police for not protecting sex workers.

You both are trying to fabricate nonsense.

Apparently you havent seen the websites of these places yet because a) they are definitely brothels and b) it couldnt possibly be racist because they have women of all types available.

Same people that blamed Benghazi on a cartoon?

Some people are just late with the fact gathering here it appears.  Guy shot up these places because he had an addiction of paying for sex at these places. It's not racist to say that even if these places were exclusively Asian women, which they werent.

Yeah I don’t consume msm. I just went there to prove a point. First time I visited msnbc.com as well. Same narrative.
I think a decent portion of the problem is that there are a lot of people that seem to be doing this.   Their sites don't care what the motivation is, they register that as "well, we got a ton of clicks on this Atlanta article"...  and then more of that is produced.    It's just an odd fascination with CNN around here.

This is good advice, but easier said than done.  For most of my life, CNN has been the go-to source for easily available and minimally biased news coverage.  Not that CNN has ever been completely without bias of course, but it's always been pretty reliable when compared to alternatives like Fox or MSNBC.  It was a nice resource for when you just wanted straight news, so you had your basic facts straight before wading off into various opinion/analysis outlets.

Watching CNN die in real time has been kind of traumatic for me.  Maybe irrationally so, just because I'm of the exact right age to have grown up with CNN when it was actually innovative.  But I don't really think it's irrational.  I think it's increasingly the case that people just want to consume media that reinforces their little bubble, which makes it hard for mainstream news outlets to survive.  The few that remain -- like the national dailies -- are nearly all pay-walled.  I'm hardly the first person to notice this, but we're steadily moving away from a world where we all have a shared set of facts toward a world where stories get bent into whatever narrative best fits our tribe's worldview.

It's odd that people are fascinated with what one of the top news networks in the world reports?

Good post, thanks - I get all that, especially the bolded.   I will admit there is what feels like a shrinking pool.     There's still NPR, Reuters, BBC, etc..   I was on BBC today and I didn't see a headline like that (admit I could have missed it).

But what seems to be a growing trend is to go to CNN just to play "gotcha", while clicking on things that you don't like (the you isn't specifically you), which feeds into the algorithms that those articles must be what gets clicks.  It's really odd.   The similar group also rarely answers questions about where they get their news and info - it's mostly just a side step like "I don't use MSM".  My guess is headlines are just as click-baity and inflammatory.

Yes, race and division will generate clicks - I don't think that is a huge secret.

I have to agree with this.
I almost never agree with @tonydead but we need to go wherever the facts lead us. At the moment, based on what we know, this explanation appears to be exactly on point.

I still strongly disagree with your analysis here.

I still believe CNN can be trusted as reliable source of news reporting. In this case, for example, to the best of my knowledge they never once reported that this was a hate crime; they reported that many people, including many prominent Asian-Americans and other leaders, assumed it was a hate crime, and under the circumstances it was quite reasonable to do so and discuss it on those terms.

I'm late to this party but from a link posted earlier, way down at the bottom:

CNN

Long told police the shootings were "not racially motivated," according to Baker, of the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office. Baker also referenced Long's "sex addiction," saying that Long sees the spas as a "temptation" that he "wanted to eliminate."

According to two law enforcement sources involved in the investigation, Long attempted to justify his actions when he told police he thought about killing himself, but decided instead to "help" others with sexual addictions by targeting spas.
I agree with those who are saying that we are blaming the wrong problem. Is there a rise in Asian violence and bias, sure.

But this is 110% an addiction motivated attack that just happens to involve a demographic that typically works in these types of establishments. In the heights of this guys additions to handies, Asian women were A-OK with him and what fueled his needs. But demons are demons and anyone who has had or studies addictive behavior can tell you that often times addicts place their blame on the drug or vice and are so consumed in it that the only way to break free is to eliminate the source (in their mind).

Apparently this dude we just kicked out of his house for porn addiction and had been living in rehab facilities to try and cure his addiction.

Someone posted early on that if sex addition was the problem, why didn't he shoot up a strip joint or adult book store.....but is Asians were the problem why didn't he attack a Sushi restaurant? I'm sure there were a ton more of those then the former.

Mental health is HUUUUUGE issue in this country and it is the match that lights these unfortunate larger issues. This, bullying, isolation and other forms of mental distress need to be take much more seriously in this country.

And in the original intention of the thread, the media's history of whipping people up with their sensationalism driven headlines is not helping either.

Good on you Tim.

Honestly, the part that sucks about this whole thing is that it instantly becomes about "let me figure out how I can use this example to show how much hate there is and how bad our fellow countrypeople are"  Its along the lines of where ZigZag was going.

This place (our country) blows.

But there IS hate against Asian Americans out there. And it’s something we should address, and try to stop. Whether this example shows it or not.

All media in this country sucks right now.  Their business models all center around causing internal conflicts between groups.  Left, Right - all of them be damned.

Media is a mirror. If stories appear slanted to you it’s because their viewers or readers have that slant. Media reflects what the public is thinking.

Agreed, but making this issue a "Asian Race" issue make the matter 100% worse. Most peopel outside the area directly effected will not read deep into the story where his sex addiction had much if not all to cause this. All they will see is "Asian motivated shooting" and make it THE talking point.

We are a country of 350M people, if you bar is "there is hate out there" based on these friggin nutjobs (which come in all colors and very much so in non white colors)...then we will continue to build distrust of each other.

To your point yesterday...one nutjob who apparently set the whole asian population of our country fearing for their lives?  Is that rational?  Is that healthy.  Even if he was a psychotic individual focused on asian hate (but apparently he was just a psychotic guy with sex issues)

There is most certainly delight. These people’s death is 100% irrelevant, all that matters is that CNN is wrong.

Is it too hard to ignore something you hate so much and just say it sucks that eight people died? Why do you need to race to CNN to check their agenda. Try being the bigger man.
8 people dead is wrong & tragic.   what's is also wrong is major news outlets reporting and hoping it is a racist crime.  I don't race to CNN for anything as their news is a a joke.  they prove it all the time.

Sometimes an event brings to light things that might have been bubbling under the surface, and people will use that as an opportunity to talk about it more.

HERE is a link to an article and in it a link to a handful of other articles about the uptick of attacks on Asians during the pandemic.

While I agree that we should avoid jumping to conclusions with headlines that assess blame just hours after an attack, I think there was a reason why people used it to talk about the issue.
