Boycotting fast food from now on (1 Viewer)

If you consider Chick-fil-A fast food and you are avoiding it, I'm sorry for you.

Otherwise carry on, but be advised Applebees and Olive Garden is fast food too.  :bye:
I don't get the Chick-fil-A love.  Totally overrated, IMHO.  And don't get me started on Crapplebees....

Thanks!  That was a great read.

Although, to be fair, that article focuses on the health implications of consuming organic food versus non-organic food.  If you looked at organic foods vs non-organic foods in terms of their environmental impact, which is how I look at it personally (although I know most consumers look at the "health benefits"), you'd be hard pressed to describe organic foods as a hoax.  But even then, that's assuming farmers are actually producing foods according to the specified guidelines, and since oversight of organic farming is very laxed, it's very possible that organic farming, as practiced in reality, has little positive impact on the environment compared to non-organic farming.

Somebody has to ask, so I might as well: What makes this a boycott?  What are you protesting or who are you punishing (besides yourself)?  Wouldn't it make more sense to just avoid unhealthy food rather engage in a boycott?

:smoo:
yeah, this is a  pretty dumb use of the word boycott.  Was going to post the same thing.  Just say you're avoiding it or quitting it.  This isn't a moral stance against unethical practices.  All my likes to you, sir.

White Castle, at Journal Square in Jersey City, is the Taj Mahal of this ilk, and a pleasure i will never give up on

i would bet my last red cent that they haven't cleaned that grill since Shirley Chisolm was Presidential timber - and we're all the better for it.

Look at this, a fellow FBG that's familiar with that white castle.

Speaking of which, white castle sliders are delicious.

I read a great article in the times the other day that more or less said 'why did it become acceptable in society to put known carcinogens in your body'  and that the mantra of 'moderation' doesn't apply to carcinogens
The poison is always in the dosage.  Always.

up that way a few times a month ... get off that PATH train, and - BOOM! there it is - an absolute shrine - been enjoying it some 30+ years now

White Castle and pleasure. Two things that should never be in the same sentence.

White Castle gives fast food a bad name.
if loving it is wrong, i don't wanna be right. ever.

Give me one solid reason to keep eating fast food and not go vegetarian/organic. I can't think of a reason to eat a big Mac or at Five Guys. Am I wrong for wanting to go cold turkey on Burger King?
There is a middle ground between vegetarian or vegan and McDonalds.

My younger 3 kids have never eaten at a fast food joint.  Well, unless you count the frosty treats from DQ.  Those are hard to beat for kids.

I don't eat it either, except of course when I break down and succumb to the deliciousness that is the Sourdough Jack.  Those are my only weakness in the fast food industry.  I can eat two before Shuke can finish one.  Believe dat.

Oh, I did try Hate Chicken about 7 months ago after a board meeting.  It was just okay.  Wonder if they weren't so anti-gay if they'd be as popular.  Didn't find their spicy chicken sandwich to be any better than Wendy's offering.

The study only looked at carbon footprint and overall land use.  That may be important to some people, but not using a huge amount of pesticides is more important to me.
Organic farms use sh#tloads of pesticides.

http://www.realclearscience.com/blog/2014/06/the_biggest_myth_about_organic_farming.html

In fact, organic farmers do use pesticides. The only difference is that they're "natural" instead of "synthetic." At face value, the labels make it sound like the products they describe are worlds apart, but they aren't. A pesticide, whether it's natural or not, is a chemical with the purpose of killing insects (or warding off animals, or destroying weeds, or mitigating any other kind of pest, as our watchful commenters have correctly pointed out). Sadly, however, "natural" pesticides aren't as effective, so organic farmers actually end up using more of them

I've wanted to kick it for a year or so.  But too many nights my kids have practices or events that prevent a nice home cooked meal.  Three kids who are into three different sports/events after hours make it tough.  We rely on fast food at least once or twice a week.

Children.  That's the reason.  Sometimes it's just easier.

   Slow cooker works very well for us.  Throw some chicken breasts with BBQ sauce or vinaigrette, or my personal fave roast beef with carrots and potatoes in before you go to work, put it on low, come home and enjoy.  Lots of options but you have to plan ahead.

+1...I actually have one within easy reach of home and one a few blocks away from the office. I just can't go except for special occasions and holidays—my body just can't handle it as ell as it use it.

The one near my home though is right smack in the middle of where my GF (now wife) lived and my house growing up. So i'd drop her off on a weekend night at [whatever random time AM] and IDK how, but my car would just instinctively pull into that parking lot.

@Max Power: "What is this planning of which you speak?"

I've never avoided fast food for my kids, but never particularly sought it out either.  When my kids were around 7 and 9, we were on an overnight trip with another family.  On the morning drive, we pulled into McD's for breakfast, and we realized my kids had never had breakfast fast food, so I had to coach them up.  I felt more ashamed than proud.

Being a poison and being a carcinogen are completely different things.  Things, like acrylamide, which is classified as a carcinogen is different than you drinking 100 glasses of water and dying.

The resistance to being educated and treating your body well is astounding.

Well that guy's statement on carcinogens is idiotic.
