You're nuts if you consider dropping Kevin Jones for Ward. Tatum Bell did not look like the answer in Detroit for today, they got lucky enough to pull out a win, the offense looks even better than it used to, and if Jones can pick up where he left off, he could be one of the top second half studs. Why would you give that up for an unspectacular talent who might play for a few weeks?

from a 2004 article I wrote about Derrick Ward:I want to start out with a kid who’s high on my list of potential stars, Derrick Ward [5-11 225 4.5] who was drafted by the New York Jets. This kid is a power back with plenty of speed. He was originally recruited to Fresno State and had some success while there. He earned Freshmen All-American honors even though he played most of his freshmen year with a broken hand. Academics kept him out for 2 seasons and he finally transferred to tiny Ottawa (Kan.) University. In his one season there he set a NAIA record by averaging 7.7 ypc for the season. He is a great athlete with outstanding hip swivel. He has excellent lower body strength and can power through the line, and create his own hole if he has to. He has good leg drive and runs with a low pad level that makes him hard to bring down. He is quick to the hole, showing great vision, and can bounce it to the outside where he gets a lot of yards after initial contact. He has a slight fumbling problem that needs to be addressed. He also needs to work on catching the ball away from his body to help with drops out of the backfield. He is J.R. Redmond’s cousin (ah, what might have been), and is a very capable back that would excel if given the chance. With the situation with LaMont Jordan up in the air, Ward could be getting significant playing time in the upcoming season and could be the heir to Curtis Martin.
 Ward's been one of my sleeper picks for awhile now. I'd never wish injury upon anyone (especially a RB I have in our contest), but it's good to see Ward out there. Hasn't lit it up yet, and his failure to catch a check down pass wasn't good, but I want to see what he can do.

From replay, looks like MCL sprain for sure. Sometimes the ACL tear can be involved as well. We will need to wait for the MRI.

They just showed the highlight of when Jacobs got injured. His leg was planted and he took a hit to the outer aspect of the knee. It looked bad. This is the type of hit that can result in the "Terrible Triad" ie damage to the MCL, ACL and medial meniscus. There is a real possibility that Jacobs could be done for the year....

just saw replay of Jacob's injury. there was an angle between the upper and lower leg when he was hit at the knee, pushing it sideways. could be anything, possibility that it is serious. and i hope it turns out to be just a 1-2 week thing.

They just had a good replay of the hit, and it was at a pretty good angle for it not to be an ACL. Usually those side hits result in MCL sprains.

Just showed his injury on NBC. Def looks like some kind of sprained knee. Might not be as bad as some think
Getting hit on the front of the knee with foot planted = ACL. Hurts like hell, but you can still walk on it.Tests = MRI --> season ending surgery if torn (as we all know)

The slack might go to Eli, who looks pretty decent, all things considered. 11/16, 165 and a TD in the first half, mostly to Shockey and Burress. I don't think the Giants are a very good team, but Eli is better than most people seem to think.
what do you mean all things considerred? He hasn't been sacked 40 yards rushing for the first half isn't too bad, time of posession, field position and all included, but they weren't running Jacobs much.Ward's been effective.I don't think Jacobs being out has negatively impacted Eli yet
I wrote this before Jacobs went out. Since then, Eli has been 3 for 4 for another TD (and thrown a bomb with seven seconds left on the clock).

They just showed it. Ran the right leg up against a Cowboy's back and it flexed left. Yowch. All this "upright gang tackling" stuff is BS in this instance, IMO
it happened after being stood up where he spun out fighting for extra yards... i'm not knocking his effort, but his size and running style promote those kind of lower leg injuries

NFL team trainers use MRIs often and have this several million dollar equipment available to them. It's somewhat common to get an MRI nowadays

Just saw the replay. His leg was literally torn off the socket, yet he continued to run with only one leg. About 10 yards down the field, he realized that his leg was torn off and one of the Cowboys brought the bloody stump over to him.

More drop/add discussion encouraged. I'd like to hear who you guys are thinking of cutting from your roster right now to pick up Ward. I'll give opinions if it helps. Obviously we're talking real time drop / add leagues. This guy might not be available in 1/2 an hour for us.
would love those leagues . . . We have to wait until Thursday . . . I'd get him in place of some scrub WR5 you'd never start . . .
In these leagues, you can jump the gun and get a guy who will help your team greatly for free (minus the drop) but you HAVE to pay attention and it gets maddening after awhile. Sometimes I wish we had a regular wiaver process. Our league you can only carry 4 RB's (carry 3 QB's, 4 RB's, 4 WR's, 2 TE's, 2 K's, 2 D's). However, you do get to carry ONE extra player at your choice of position, i.e., you could carry 5 RB's if you used your extra (we call it flex) player. This is a dynasty league (we can keep 6 with no draft pick penalties for keeping players). What do you think of Ward for Kevin Jones in this roster scenario?RB roster:1. Shaun Alexander2. Deuce McCallister3. Michael Turner (no way I drop Turner; I'm keeping for certain free agency move in 2008)4. Julius Jones5. <used my "flex" player here to carry 5 RB's> Kevin Jones

as much as I can't stand Jones, you'd be overreacting to get Ward at this moment . . . for all we know, eithera) Jacobs is back next weekorb) RBBC between Jacobs, Droughns and others . . .good luck . . .

You gotta think and decide quick in these leagues. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for the input. Makes me feel better.

FWIW, usually the unhappy triad with ACL included is when the foot is fixed on the ground and someone hits the outside of the knee. Not the case here, but still anything is possible.

cool thanks!sitting a little cooler  great amounts of specualtion go through your mind in leagues like this as soon as an injury happens - I'm not argiung and I'm glad two guys have said to stay put now - but to illustrate my point and line of thinking:Other possibilites:a) Kevin Jones doesn't come back strong from his injuryb) Kevin Jones shares carries with Taterc) Giants' starting HB is better opportunity than Lions' starting HB because offense is better or comparable and the Giants are a better team.d) League is 1 point per 10 yards rush/rec and 6 per TD's - Kevin Jones has never mustered up more than a one hand count TD total his whole time in Detroit - Giants RB could be top 20 or Top 15.LIKE I SAID - Real time wiaver wire leagues, especially a competitive 12 man league require quick thinking. I'd bet Ward has already been picked up by someone already. It's the first owner to put in a drop add. Hell, he could have been gone as soon as what's her name on the sideline reported it.

FWIW, usually the unhappy triad with ACL included is when the foot is fixed on the ground and someone hits the outside of the knee. Not the case here, but still anything is possible.
Actually his foot was planted on the ground and the lateral aspect of the knee took a hit. A bad one. Terrible triad is very much in the picture here.

I'm curious as to why you say that he's "not the answer"? He had a TD, averaged 5.8 yards a carry, caught 4 basses (granted, for only 6 yards) and was in the line-up in the red zone. I think that the scenario might end up being a true RBBC IF Jones comes back healthy, making both backs virtually worthless.

I just picked up Chris Brown earlier today in my league with Jacobs. I was thinking "Great some more depth at RB"

Now I'm thinking of picking up Ward and dropping Brown.

It seems that Ward would be the better choice than Brown due to:

Titans RBBC

Brown's injury history

Ward looks like he's getting all the carries tonight (No Droughns)

Any thoughts?

Yeah, you might be dropping Jacobs to pick up Ward.

We all saw the mechanism of the injury. However, NONE of us can say whether it's something as simple as a minor sprain or a season ending, surgery requiring tear. Let's just wait for the MRI before we continue to argue what it is based on what it looked like on film or how he came off the field.

His injury had nothing to do with "upright" running. Somebody rolled on his knee.
his upright running style caused him to get stood up... his willingness to fight for extra yards after being stood up did the dirty deed
Did you see the replay? He was running through the hole and somebody rolled on his leg.
you saw the tail end of the run... he was stood up at the line before he spun out and ran through your apparent "hole"...

I agree... But an MRI should be done within a day. Decide then.

You are correct. My fault. It look at first that he was just stepping off, but he was up on his toes. We'll have to wait.

I play in an immediate waiver wire add/drop league too. Do I drop Chester Taylor for Ward or stay put?10 team/H2H/Non-PPR/performance league

League starts QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, RB/WR flex, TE, K , DEF

1 pt for each 20 pass, rush & rec yds. 6 pts for all TDs.

Roster:

QB - C. Palmer, J. Campbell

RB - F. Gore, E. James, Thomas Jones, D. McAllister, M. Lynch, Chester Taylor

WR - D. Branch, J. Galloway, C. Chambers, S. Holmes, K. Curtis

TE - B. Scaife

K - J. Nedney

DEF - Bears D

I say dump Chester. There is nothing like a brand new shinny RB you know nothing about to give one hope in a dire situation.

I remember laughing at the guy who jumped on Willie Parker in my dynasty league.

I am looking at having to drop norwood or welker, and I think I am staying put. Unless jacobs is out for the year, then I drop him.

He played very well IMO. Granted, the Cowboys were focusing on Eli, but nonetheless, he showed potential. He has some speed and apparent toughness. If you just look at the stats, 116 total yards and a TD against a strong defense is impressive too.

I guess Ward is the hot pickup this week, but not in 5 of 6 of my leagues. I picked him up in 5 leagues on Thurs. Now back to your regularly scheduled program.

Coughlin just said, "Jacob's is an MCL. That's all I know." :lmao:
Definition:Medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury is a stretch, partial tear, or complete tear of the ligament on the inside of the knee. Alternative Names:Knee injury - medial collateral ligament (MCL); MCL injury Considerations:The medial collateral ligament (MCL) extends from the upper-inside surface of the shin bone to the bottom-inside surface of the thigh bone. The ligament stabilizes the joint on the inside of the knee.Causes:The MCL is usually injured by pressure placed on the knee joint from the outside. It is often injured at the same time as an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury .

Symptoms of a medial collateral ligament injury tend to correlate with the extent of the injury. MCL injuries are graded on a scale of I to III. Grade I MCL TearThis is an incomplete tear of the MCL. The tendon is still in continuity, and the symptoms are usually minimal. Patients usually complain of pain with pressure on the MCL, and may be able to return to their sport very quickly. Most athletes miss 1-2 weeks of play. Grade II MCL TearGrade II injuries are also considered incomplete tears of the MCL. These patients may complain of instability when attempting to cut or pivot. The pain and swelling is more significant, and usually a period of 3-4 weeks of rest is necessary. Grade III MCL TearA grade III injury is a complete tear of the MCL. Patients have significant pain and swelling, and often have difficulty bending the knee. Instability, or giving out, is a common finding with grade III MCL tears. A knee brace or a knee immobilizer is usually needed for comfort, and healing may take 6 weeks or longer.

So this would men if it is just the MCL he is not out for the season?

Looks that way. However, this is straight from the article:The MCL is usually injured by pressure placed on the knee joint from the outside. It is often injured at the same time as an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

So I guess just take that for what it's worth.
