Brandon Jacobs (1 Viewer)

No thanks.

Good for Wilson. Good for Scott. Will be surprised if Jacobs even makes it to Andre Brown's return (Giants cut bait due to his crying he's not getting touches).

Jacobs already proved last year playing for a winner doesn't matter to him.

I texted a couple of my friends who were Wilson owners saying "NYG signed Jacobs, you're in the clear".

I
Just 2 years ago, he did this and this. Last year he sat on the bench. Are you sure he can't contribute?
100% sure? Of course not. I do find it funny that you chose to highlight Jacobs catching the ball however, as he averaged something like 10 catches a season over his career. He doesn't have very good hands, think Micheal Turner.

I'm an NJ native, so I've seen him play extensively. Towards the ends of his career he became sluggish and became way too easy to bring down for a man his size. I even seem to recall him becoming ineffective at the GL, ceding carries to Bradshaw in the red zone before his departure. Odds are pretty good that he just doesn't have much left, or he wouldn't have been signed out of desperation.

Who gets the GL carries this week in Denver? Does Scott get a crack or will Jacobs step in immediately for that duty?
He's not a good short yardage back. Never has been.

He's big, runs a bit upright, and needs a head of steam.
They could line him up in punt formation, have Eli be in the shotgun, and have him take three steps backward and hand it off to Jacobs. By the time Jacobs got to the line of scrimmage he'd be doing 5 miles an hour.

I imagine he would be hard to stop on 4th and 1 when he's 60 years old. There has to be some TDs coming his way as a vulture.

At whatever age he is now, I assume he can play FB in a pinch.

He was always faster than most thought and more productive per carry than most noticed. He was a hard worker and he and Ward were battlers behind Tiki. A while after Jacobs started and got some fame, he began shooting his mouth off about almost anything. I imagine this was a serious concern for the Giants. There's no way they want a mouthy veteran around their young backs, but if he's back to working hard...that'll work. His quotes are proper and all making me hope he is back to the old self again.

It's interesting he kept in shape and looked better than McKnight and McGahee.

It's interesting he's in football shape, yeah, but the general consensus is that there has to be something legitimately wrong with McGahee if he hasn't found a home yet; a healthy McGahee wins out every time IMO. McKnight is also more of a COP back, not something NYG was in the market for I'm assuming.

Ultimately, I'm betting the overriding factor here was simply his knowledge of the system. He's low maintenance, as in it won't take much to catch him up to speed and he can "contribute" right away.

Knees have to be kept in shape all the time when they've had significant work done on them. They just get all sore and there's like an instant decline if ya don't keep at it. I wonder about McGahee and how much rest he's had.

I'm sure you're right and him knowing the system was a huge point in his favor, how could it not be. Still I really think the Gmen will be on red alert waiting for him to shoot his mouth off. He better know he's not some young stud RB that they'll tolerate it from because he brings so much to the field. If they're digging, I would have preferred other former Gmen RBs than Jacobs for this reason alone.

What I take from this is they signed the guy they knew the best that can probably do the little things they need done the quickest.

I think it is a positive thing for Wilson owners because I am fairly confident that signing a healthy (if they are or will be) McGahee or Beanie Wells would have been a much more significant threat to Wilson in a month or so. Either of those players could have stolen pieces of work from Wislon in different areas and I think either could reasonably be turned to if Wilson has another issue with ball security. I don't think I can say the same for Jacobs at this point.

I'm guessing Jacobs was brought in primarily to protect Eli -- he already knows the pass protection schemes and is big enough to anchor against big LBs. If he gets more than a handful of touches I'll be shocked.

Exactly.

As a Giants fan this is how I see it. Jacobs will get 5-7 touches a game and will be a veteran 'mentor' (lack of a better word) for Wilson. He'll also be in the back field for any obvious passing downs.

Yup. He's a blocker. Nobody wants a 300 pound twinkle toes on their team. If he somehow learns to run through things like he used to then he could be valuable, but he's been a prancer and a dancer for a while now.

Jacobs brings some attitude with him the Giants badly need. He pumps everyone up and given the opportunity, will just punch defenders in the mouth and take their teeth as a souvenir (figuratively).

FF wise, I'm not sure hes that valuable. However, he might see some goal-line action. I'd imagine with fresh legs and limited carries, stopping 270lbs. of man running full steam ahead will be tough to stop 1/2 yard shy of the endzone. I wouldnt be surprised with a stat line like this: 6 carries, 14 yards, 2 TD's. Then again, he might just be there to block and thats it. No telling really..

....he is known as the tip-toe burglar, or 'the tip-toe bandit' over on the giants forums. Big man, goofy little feet.

Bumping this for some more discussion. Given that the Giants planned to hold that RB workout before Wilson's fumbles, couldn't one assume they were looking to replace Brown's role?

If so, Jacobs could have some value with short yardage and third down work, no?

I recall Jacobs looking good in SF during the preseason until he hurt his knee. Then he was buried on the depth chart and started his usually brandon jacobs chatter. I dont think he's done. 1.5 years off for a bruising running back might be more of a blessing than most people are considering.

Plus, a little humility might be just what the big guy needed. He admitted being humbled in his press conference.

Jacobs wants to be a nimble, shifty running back. I'm assuming ever since he started playing football he had people telling him to play LB, DE, or TE, but he just wants to be a RB. Problem is: he wants to be an all around back instead of what he should be: a power back. He would always get defensive and say that he's more than just a battering ram - and while he might be the most nimble 6'5" 265 lb running back ever - thats like being the tallest midget in the circus. Look at highlights of his rookie year as to what type of back he should be. Guy was a truck. He shows glimpses of that in later years; however, he kept acting like he should do more than that and he was concerned with his longevity if he continued to run like that (2007-2011). I think he might finalize realize that if he wants to be on an NFL roster, he will have to be the battering ram that we all love him to be.

He's a very unique player that swam upstream by remaining a RB to carve out a successful NFL career.

As far as fantasy, he's like michael bush on Chi.

Nice post.

Something that netnalp brought to my attention in the Wilson thread a ways back was an interview with Tiki Barber.

Barber talks about the offensive line and what they are best suited for run blocking. He says this is more straight forward for the current group than plays to the outside.

So while I have never been a fan of Jacobs, this seems like what they are looking for. A RB who can hang on to the ball and fight for extra yards running up the middle.

If it were a more pressing issue however I am not sure why they had to wait until after week 1 to bring in a veteran more cheaply?

I just don't think they want to get Wilson smashed a ton running dive plays. Lots of RB can do that.

I think Jacobs is mostly there for pass blocking.

These coaches are very slow to have confidence and trust in their RBs. That applies to Jacobs too. Sure he has been with the team before. Does not mean they won't want to see him practice a ton before they are willing to give him a lot of snaps, just like all of the other guys.

I do think they want an inside COP/3rd down RB. Releasing Bradshaw still seems like a rash move to me.
