HOLY ####!

I nearly traded for him today. In fact I sent three emails trying to pry him away and bebuffed at every turn. WOW!

Interesting response to having an extra legit starting pitcher lying around and a god-awful bullpen with a pressing need at set-up man.

Not what I would have done, but I'm willing to see how this plays out before I kill them for it.

I guess spending your dough on A. Eaton and not relief pitching was a bad idea. Who knew?

Shocking decision. I wouldn't have it If I was Meyers.

Are they ####### serious???????

Even as a fan :lmao: of the Phils, all I can do is  . What a joke.

This has to have fantasy owners just kicking and screaming and throwing things at their TV sets.

Now is the time to trade for Myers, though. If he's a single-digit player in an auction keeper league, he could easily be the closer next year.

Sounds like Philadelphia is hoping that his stock will rise so they can deal him for some help...
You mean Jon Lieber, not Brett Myers right? Myers just signed a long term deal. Lieber and Garcia are both in the final years of their deals so they will be the first to go. IMO, Manuel is an idiot. If you're gonna move any starter to the bullpen it should be Adam Eaton. Oh well! Hopefully Uncle Charlie will be gone soon. The writing is on the wall.

He has to mean Lieber - but the way I first read it, it sounded like he ment Myers - which makes no sense. While they claim this is permanent for this year, I call bull#### on that - even though Brett obviously doesn't want to flip in and out - as soon as someone gets hurt, you have to think he gets the call.

Trying to understand the logic here . . .

Let's take our best starter for the last 2 years and throw him into the bullpen because he's had 2 bad starts to start the year. :ptts:

The Phillies have become the NY Knicks of baseball.

wow - just wow

Of course I meant Lieber...

Agreed posty. Sadly, Lieber's stock was pretty high in the spring (he had excellent numbers) and there were no bites. Sure the trade deadline is coming so they'll get something for him. I hope he can muster something other then a 5.5 ERA for the next month.

Myers agreed, with the caveat that once he goes to the bullpen, he stays there all season unless a starter suffers a long-term injury or is traded. He could return to the rotation next season.

"I told them I didn't want to get bounced back and forth all year," the righthander said. "If I'm going to get my mentality set on being a setup guy, that's what I want to be. I don't want it to jump back and forth like it did with Madson last year."

Sounds to me like Charlie Manuel is going nuts.
GOING nuts? This is the next in a long line of crazy things he's done. To name a few:1) Platooning Utley and Polanco while playing David Bell everyday 2) After finally learning his lesson about Utley, giving up on Polanco again in favor of David Bell 3) Prematurely throwing Ryan Madson into a starting role when he was younger and pitching well in the pen. Now he can't do either well 4) Taking into well into last year to move Ryan Howard up in the batting order 5) Trying to fight Howard Eskin. I'm no Eskin fan either, but I think he could take ManuelThis clown has to go

Yeah actually Myers seemed kind of happy about the move. Apparently, he likes the idea of not having to wait 4 days to pitch. Do you think it's possible Myers approached the team about making this move?

6) Has absolutely NO idea on how to do a double switch.Could this team possibly be a bigger mess? I'm not sure that all of this would even be as big of a deal if the Phillies were hitting like they should. But their pitching problems have been magnified because they're not putting up 6+ runs a game to bail them out. I mean, this is a team that has left 122....ONE HUNDRED TWENTY TWO...baserunners on base in just 12 games. :goodposting:

Anyone holding on to Myers? Cutting him loose? What are the odds he ends up back in the rotation?

NOTE: He has the 4th most strikeouts in the MLB since opening day 2005.

I'd hold onto him. This is the Phillies we're talking about and they have no clue what they're doing. I'd say he has about a 33% chance of remaining in the setup role, a 33% chance of being moved back to a starter and a 33% chance of becoming the closer. That means he has 66.66666667% chance of being valuable to you.

The guys on WIP's night time show were saying that they think Gordon's done as a closer. They were saying how horrible he is and that Myers should be the closer.

It's hard to argue with them. Gordon is getting up there in age and Myers has the stuff to close. Whether or not he has the mental toughness to close, I don't know. Regardless, it's probably a mute point because Manuel will keep things the way they are to prove a point.

:goodposting: and as a Gordon owner, I hope Manuel's stupidity holds true in this case.....

Tonight was a perfect example of why the term "closer" is terrible. Myers was just cruising and looking good vs my Reds. But because he's the 'set-up' man and not the 'closer' they had to bring in their closer and KABLOOEY!

As a Reds fan, thanks!

Could be heading to the "closer" role sometime...

As per rotoworld...

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel says that Tom Gordon is still the team's closer, but Brett Myers is in position to take over the role.

We're committed to [Gordon] until Brett becomes better or whatever, and we'll see from there," Manuel. "Flash still has good stuff. The fact that he's been hit has more to do with his command than anything. At the same time, we have to get Myers out there in a save situation and see how things go." Myers should pick up a few saves in the next few weeks and could take over the job if he takes advantage of the opportunities.

Gordon is so fragile he wasn't available saturday or sunday after throwing 37 pitches on Friday night. I'm not opposed to them saving Gordon for some sort of stretch run, but it's pretty clear Myers is going to get those saves when he's off.
