broke my elbow/ update post 54 (1 Viewer)

No re-injury. Basically, Scar tissue from surgery/injury which "adheres" to bone tore loose during the dead lift. OT warned me that it might occur sometimes and could be painful. Fortunately, it wasn't painful for me. Basically, felt like someone had plucked a guitar string inside my arm and was more of an odd sensation than painful.

I really think much of my recovery was due to the OT who was "a hand specialist". All she worked with were hand and elbow injuries. I also saw a PT which helped with strength but the OT really worked on range of motion when I would go in.

Ok, got it. Thank you. I haven't even thought or talked about PT yet. The ortho mentioned exercises once the splint is removed but they will be done with the sling on.

Almost at the 3 week mark since my injury and it's been tougher than I thought it would be. They took the splint off last week because you have to start moving it asap or else you'll never get the range of motion back. So, i'm walking around with a broken elbow just in a sling. It's tough to not want to move it because daily life requires it. I've put pressure on it and turned it in ways I'm not ready to yet and the pain instantly lets me know that's not OK.

When I broke the elbow I also fell on my head and required surgical glue to close the wound. I have a nice little scar above the corner of my eyebrow. Started having headaches around the 10 day mark and they're still with me. I also have a random squeaking/beeping in my right ear. I had thought I broke my jaw when it first happened but got sidetracked with the head wound and broken elbow. maybe I messed up my jaw more than I thought. My bite was way off those first few days, my teeth weren't hitting in the same spots that they did before. My bite is normal now though.

Back to the doc a week from Tuesday, hopefully will be better by then. He said in 3 months i'll be able to do one handed cartwheels, in 6 months I will not remember which arm I hurt. At the 18 day point it feels like that will never happen. -wd

Good luck Willie. I feel for ya.

Can you use the hand on that arm at all?
I can a little but I can't really grip anything without pain. Tying shoes is tough as is opening anything. i can't wash dishes yet or anything like that. Tough to even wash my hands or use shampoo. But it is better than it was. ( I can make a fist)

Thanks for the well wishes

Orthos usually don't know #### about rehab. I wouldn't take their word on everything.

Wishful thinking on the docs part. Hard to understand how they won't prescribe therapy sometimes.

I'll ask him about pt next time I see him. He was all about treating it conservatively early on because he felt the worst thing that could happen, given the location of the injury and position of the bone/fracture, would be if the fracture became displaced. Would turn it into a much bigger deal requiring surgery and a prosthetic radial head. I feel like straightening and bending will not be a problem but twisting (palm face down to face up movement) will be the hard part.
