Broncos sign Selvin Young (1 Viewer)

Cec and I both felt strongly that a one cut scheme was the one thing Selvin could do well. He has a powerful lower body and creates good drive when his hips are square to the LoS. He was solid at UT this year after finally being healthy, and looked better than Jamaal Charles, who was a sensation at UT in his freshman year.

The problem is, he gets hurt all the time. He hurt his quad at the Shrine Game after one good practice, and the injury limited him through part of the pre draft season.

As Mike Bell demonstrated last year, you never know...

Im still :hey: to see what Andre Hall does.

Agreed. Shanny wants his backs to kill themselves for every yard. It's what TBell could never do. It destroyed TDavis and several others. Mike Bell is perfect for that running style because he's just all heart, knees and elbows. I don't see Young impressing Shanny. He doesn't thump enough.

Doesn't he have a problem holding on to the ball as well? That's the most grievance of offenses for Shanny.

From all accounts, sounds like he's another Quentin Griffin, a smallish RB with fumbling issues who failed in Denver's offense.

Well, there's a big difference of course. Bell was competing against Tatum Bell, a guy Shanny never appeared willing to commit to; and was definitely not sold on entering camp a year ago. Young has to go up against Travis Henry, a guy Shanny went out and got, to be his feature back.Of course, injuries do happen. No one though Reuben Droughns could deliver. No one thought Mike Anderson could deliver. NO ONE thought Mike Bell could deliver. So you never know.

So you never know.
:goodposting:all im saying is start paying attention if he lasts through the first round of cuts or so. Cecil will be there to report on him first hand, and I hope to join him in dove valley for a few days of practice watching, so if Selvin makes it to camp, I'll be watching him closely.

As a UT fan that has seen Young alot, and I might be stretching alot because he was never on the field but he has all around talent. He's tough, he physical, decent speed, and average vision. But man if you pick him up and expect him to play he will sorely dissappoint you because he always have something hurting. I think he went to a good situation and I've known about this signing for about 2-3 days now and was hoping it went unnoticed. was gonna be a 5th round rookie pick and pray.

Thanks Bloom

Head CaseHEAD CASEThe Broncos got him at the right price but I do not see this working out.
Not sure why you think he's a head case. Selvin was anything but a head case at Texas and really stepped it up as a leader for last year's team after Vince left. He had bad luck with injuries and seemed to have lost a bit of his speed as a result, but he's a solid guy. If he can do well on special teams, he has a shot to make the denver roster. He did have some fumbling problems in 2005, but was better about that last year.

Anything new on this, Bloom?

I just took a flyer on him @ 3.10 of a four round rookie draft. Not much left at that point anyway, IMO, so it's not like i'm wasting a pick.

The only reason Mike Bell was able to make waves last year is because his competition consisted of Tatum Bell and Cedric Cobbs.

Travis Henry is a few notches up from those guys. Unless he gets hurt, he's going to be the man for Denver for the next 1-3 years.

I'm not expecting a miracle, just hoping he makes the team. After that who knows what could happen. At some point he becomes too attractive to pass on. I reached that point.

fixedShanny could name the waterboy his starting RB heading into camp and it wouldn't surprise me one bit

:goodposting: They're not paying Henry $12 million in guaranteed cash to watch from the sidelines.

Not so sure. They're paying Daniel Graham more than that in guaranteed cash ($13.5 mil I think), and he may be mostly the #2/blocking TE. If Shanny doesn't like a dude, even one he signed, his salary is irrelevant. Ask Plummer and Griese. I'm not saying that'll happen with Henry, I'm just saying that we shouldn't act like it _can't._

People have short memories. Graham was Mackey award winner and a first round pick. He is a tremendous blocker, but he can catch the ball if he is asked to. He often makes tremendous catches. It is debatable whether Scheffler is even a better WR; he is not significantly better by any stretch of the imagination. Graham doesn't get that contract to just be a blocking TE.
