Browns: If D. Anderson declines latest offer, he is likely gone (1 Viewer)

Yes the primary selling point is that Derek Anderson is still a kid. His best years should still be ahead of him. He did very well for his age and experience.

I guess my question, is who would sign him? Anyone with QB issues has a high enough pick that a 1 & 3 is probably too much to ask. Maybe Chicago? I mean, SF can't (they don't have their own #1 pick), Carolina won't (Delhomme and Moore), and the rest have way too high of a pick. Maybe they can negotiate with the Browns and offer them a #2 or something?

Let's just say DA stays in Cleveland and has an even better year in 2008 than he had in 2007. He could be franchise tagged correct? Or can you not franchise players that were tendered the year before?

ESPN First Take just hinted at a huge deal going down for an NFL QB.

More to come.

DA to stay w/ Browns.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that the Browns have increased their offer to free agent Derek Anderson to a three-year, $21-23 million deal, with $12 million guaranteed.

A source tells the Dispatch that a deal could be reached if the team went to $24 million total, which certainly seems doable if the sides are really that close. The Browns are certainly making themselves look like they tried everything to re-sign Anderson.

Derek Anderson has reportedly agreed to a multiyear deal with the Browns.

ANDERSON STAYS PUT Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the Browns have agreed to terms with quarterback Derek Anderson on a three-year deal.Schefter reports that Anderson will receive over $14 million in guaranteed money. The three-year contract gives the Browns an opportunity to defer the ultimate decision in the Derek v. Brady debate. It also allows the Browns to bench Anderson if he tanks as the starter; with a six-year, big-money deal, the Browns as a practical matter would have been required to give Anderson more opportunities. The loser in all of this is Brady Quinn, and it traces to his 2007 holdout. If he had reported to camp on time, he likely would have been first in line to play after Charlie Frye. Also, because Quinn's incentives are tied heavily to playing time, his chances of earning big money have now dropped dramatically.

Derek Anderson fans should be extremely happy with this decision if it is true. Anderson will now have an offseason to work on his weaknesses and stays in an offense that he knows and was very good in. If he plays well which I assume he will, the Browns can then make a decision at the end of next year to move Quinn and perhaps extend Anderson's contract.

Can't say I'm happy about giving this guy $14M guaranteed, but it's better than having him play the year on the RFA tender.

Almost makes you wonder if something else is going on, like a trade. When the deal for Williams for the Browns' 2nd rounder was announced I assumed that Anderson was gone. Savage really values draft picks, so it seems strange he'd be satisfied with no 1st or 2nd in the upcoming draft.

Yep, and he's also said many times he won't accept less than a 1st and 3rd for DA. I wonder if a "good enough" 1st would be enough, or even two 2nds and a 3rd.

Smart move turning down $10 mill guaranteed. He made himself another $4 mill guaranteed by sticking to his guns.
