I think Simms can be a decent QB, but anybody who doesn't believe Gradkowski will eventually be a serious threat to Simms is underestimating Gradkowski. Not sure there's any other way to put it.
Based on 2 pre-season games? Against 2nd and 3rd team D's with nothing on the line? Gradkowski has done well in camp and in 2 preseason games, and he does seem to have a gunslinger mentality. Simms on the other hand has successfully led a team to the division title. He had a 6-3 regular season record in Nov, Dec, and Jan, which are the months where division titles are won and lost. I think a little perspective is all that's being asked for here.
It would be silly to base my perspective of Gradkowski off of the preseason, alone. Mostly, it comes from watching him in college (not a Toledo homer, just from a scouting point of view). I loved Gradkowski coming out of college & I like him even more in Tampa Bay (FF-wise). This dude can play. Make no mistake about it. I believe Simms will have to play at a high level or Gruden will eventually make the switch (maybe a year or two). I don't expect Gradkowski to start this season unless Simms gets injured or just falls flat on his face. Again, I think Simms can be a decent QB, but Gradkowski will be better (clearly better in time), IMO. I don't think that's such an outlandish prediction.
