so we kicked off my son's 11u spring season for baseball this weekend. Had a scrimmage-type round robin with the teams from our immediate area. 

Highlights

  • Kid is raking out of the gate. Slash line of 500/778/1000 (sss caveats obviously applying, though he's been over 1000 ops since moving to kid-pitch)
  • We played a 12U team that was also up a level (no idea why this game was ever even scheduled). My kid pitched an inning, and gave up a 250 foot homer to dead center to their 1B, who looks like he is in high school. I gave him the Bull Durham quote later... "Man, that ball got out of here in a hurry"
  • I almost got tossed from yesterday's game. Top of 1st inning. My kid leads off. Gets HBP on the foot, steals 2B, then tries to steal 3B. Base ump makes no visible call, and no one knows what to do. The ump appears to be uncertain what to do. But apparently he called him out as the other team runs off the field (3rd out). Ump saunters over to the backstop fence and explains that he called him out, but that the 3Bman was blocking the bag and that he should have called him safe. I curtly said "well, make it right then." He says he can't now, and besides, these games are about the training." So i doubled-down and retorted "so that means you are in training, too?" He quickly comes back and says "i can train you by sending you to the parking lot." and then stared me down. Not proud of this. Just was in reactive mode because my kid has never been thrown out stealing before.
 
in the car ride home, my son asked me what's he's supposed to do when the fielder is blocking the bag on a steal (note that it wasn't just his foot, but his whole lower leg, like a hockey goalie).

don't really want him sliding head first.

i didn't know what to say other than sliding hard into the base, and hoping the ump makes the correct call. but don't want to encourage injuries either.  :shrug:

Not much you can do other than slide hard into the base.  They probably wear rubber or MCS cleats at that level so it's not quite as effective as wearing metals.

Nothing wrong with playing hard and within the rules. If the other player wants to try and sneak one over, or innocently does not know, a hard legal slide is part of the game. While we never look to hurt anyone, contact is part of the game. So you just focus on your job... run hard, slide hard, and let the game take care of the rest.

Rutledge is an odd Rule 5 pickup by Boston.  He was on the Sox last year but was mostly injured.  Boston cut him so he signed a minor league deal with his original club Colorado.  He wasn't on the 40 man so Boston claimed him under Rule 5.

Farrell loves him for some reason, that plus the rule 5 status means he'll likely make the club. Worth a shot, just looking for MI Pa's at this point. :shrug:

I think his cookie chance is fairly decent as well since he's a streaky hitter who won't be exposed to a full season of ABs. If he gets on a hot streak at some point he could end up with a decent slash line and multiple positions over 200-250 PAs.
