cheese had timed out. kraft had already posted his picks, and snc asked for skip. that put me otc. i was posting my pick when we lost power here (big storms), so jumped on phone to finish. in the meantime, cheese showed up. sorry for the confusion.

Question for those with MLB in your towns:

How long has the "number of options" thing been in place for Major League players? Back in the '80s, I'd follow MLB via the NBC Saturday Game of the Week, Monday Night Baseball (when that was on), WGN/TBS Cubs/Braves broadcasts, and local UHF Astros broadcasts. Never once recall anyone talking about "so-and-so still has an option left ..."

I played fantasy baseball from 1992-1994 (leeg broke up after the '94 strike) ... and again, never heard about players having limits on how many times they could be sent to the minors. But then, that wasn't a deep leeg, and very few prospects were ever drafted.

So, anyhow, how old is the current player-control scheme? Was that part of the fallout/negotiations from the '94 strike? And is that why there were plenty of, say, 21/22-year-old rookies in '80s MLB (it seemed?), and almost none today?

That's another thing that's different from the '80s ... every other pitcher getting TJ surgery.

Could a young Nolan Ryan or Tom Seaver get 2016 hitters out if they time-travelled forward and used their early 1970s stuff? Or would they get smacked around and be forced to adjust and use elbow-killing mechanics just to be competitive against 2016's replacement-level hitters?
