Burress-Is he back now? (1 Viewer)

Burress has been very up and down the last 8 weeks due to ankle and knee injuries. I was watching the highlights of yesterday's game and that is the best I have seen him run in 2 months. He was making nice cuts, had accleration and even made a few moves. Is he back on must start lists now? He plays Wash this week who has a nice secondary, but he really looked like the ankle didn't bother him nearly as much as other weeks.

First off, I didn't see the full game so others should know more than me. However, it sounds like he was having problems warming up and the announcers were shocked he played at the level he did. I did see one beautiful catch over the middle where I felt he was noticeably slower as he tried to run.

It's possible he's getting better, but it's just counter-intuitive that things would get better while playing at the NFL level every week. I have believe he carries some risk the rest of the season.

Don't have the link, but he said after the game that he's feeling better and hopes to be closer to 100% come the playoffs.

Then again, when you win, especially a close division game against a rival, everything feels better.

He certainly isnt the same player he was at the beginning of the season. If the Giants are smart, they'll hold him out of some games to let him rest up for the playoffs. Of course, Coughlin is the HC, so them doing the smart thing is hardly common.

The Giants are still fighting for playoff positioning and considering the production they are getting from Burress, I don't see how it would be smart to sit him.

They're going to be 5th or 6th. Dallas has already clinched the division, and barring a monumental collapse where they dont win a single game remaining and a 6-7 team wins out, they're in the playoffs. They really dont have anything to play for in the positioning department.

Would you rather play in Tampa or in Seattle in the first round?I don't know about you, but there seems to be a lot to play for and a heck of a lot of difference between 5th and 6th.

Plaxico Burress-WR- Giants Dec. 9 - 10:09 pm et Coach Tom Coughlin said in his post-game presser Sunday that he's noticed a "bounce" in Plaxico Burress' step recently and thinks he's feeling better."He had a couple weeks in a row where he was really hurting with various ailments," Coughlin said. "I think last week I noticed he had a bounce in his step and I thought he was feeling a little bit better." Plax caught seven passes for 136 yards and a TD Sunday and can safely be kept in fantasy lineups.

Transcript: Postgame WR Plaxico Burress

December 9, 2007

On whether he felt physically better today than he has in previous weeks:

“I felt pretty good. We did work all week to try to get better. The better I start feeling, the more explosive I will become and the more explosive the offense becomes. We will take it one day at a time. It’s coming around at the right time of the season and hopefully, I can get to full speed soon.”

The Giants are still fighting for playoff positioning and considering the production they are getting from Burress, I don't see how it would be smart to sit him.

New York Giants: 9-4Playing for: Wild-card berth.Fantasy Playoff ramifications: The Giants appear to be a lock for the playoffs, but they'll be on the road as Dallas has clinched the NFC East. With New York eyeing an easier matchup with the Bucs in Round 1, look for them to get into that No. 5 seed, then rest banged-up players like Brandon Jacobs and Plaxico Burress.

Giving credit where credit is due, Plaxico Burress played much better than he had been in recent weeks, and it came in a must-win game for the Giants. With a loss, they'd be close to collapsing in the NFC playoff picture. But with the win, Burress and the Giants are a virtual lock for the postseason. Bothered by ankle and knee problems, Burress grabbed seven passes for 136 yards with a touchdown, running his routes well and able to jump for receptions. See what not practicing does for you? :football:

New York Giants: They've got a two-game lead over the surging Vikings for the top wild-card spot, so they're in good shape to make the playoffs. However, the offense has been struggling lately, so you know they'll want to get everything in order heading into the playoffs, so don't expect Big Blue to relax. Plaxico Burress seemed to find his burst again against the Eagles after the nagging ankle injury limited him for weeks, so that's good news for the still erratic Eli Manning. However, it wouldn't be a surprise if Burress gets some rest if a playoff berth is locked up. Getting some consistency out of Jeremy Shockey and the persistently banged-up Brandon Jacobs would be nice as well. The Giants have intriguing matchups against the Redskins and Bills the next two weeks before the Patriots come calling in the season finale.

It's good to hear all the quotes about him having a new "jump in his step". Personally, I didn't see it and I watched the entire game carefully on Sunday. I thought he still looked to be very hobbled - perhaps 70% at best. Just my personal read. And I'm a Burress owner.

Won't start unless I have to. Gut says that there will be lot of owners duped into starting him and he'll go 1 for 9 yds and sit out part of the game.

Ask yourself: how will you feel if you lose because you started Plax? I'd be yelling "STUPID! STUPID! STUPID!"

I know Burress has had some injury issues but he's been banged up all year. I think the inconsistency of Eli Manning has been more of a problem than his ankle issue. When Eli plays well, Plaxico is going to have good games. When Eli plays poorly (which he has during Plaxico's slump) then Plax is going to suffer. I know it works both ways and Plax has been getting some of the blame for Eli's poor play, but it's more Eli's fault. Eli has not really looked that good this year.

Actually, I think Eli's poor play is more Plax's fault. Without a healthy Burress, the Giants have no verticle game. Neither Shockey or Toomer stretch the field and Sinorice Moss can barely remember which team he's playing for. That leads to Eli constantly throwing underneath, and eventually he makes a mistake or the defense anticipates the route. Also, if the Giants dont have Ward or Jacobs in the backfield, the offense will be abysmal.

I agree with this assessment. Burress had a good game, but to me he clearly didn't have anywhere near the same burst or leaping ability he demonstrated before his ankle injury. On one catch, he ran out of bounds while appearing to be careful not to put any more pressure on his ankle than necessary. It's hard to describe if you didn't see the play, but he appeared to be running "flat-footed", and on another play he seemed to be incapable of trying to accelerate toward the pass thrown to him. I'm betting the Giants rest him as soon as NY's playoff seed is determined.
