Ignoring you
There is a lot of truth in this.  Often people say it to refrain from telling you the real reason(s) they don't talk to you.  It's a catch all and a way out of a potentially difficult conversation and more.  It's also pretty pathetic.

Where I work, I'd say absolutely nothing. We use an IM system. If you don't move your mouse, type, whatever, it will show you a "inactive" or "away" after five minutes. However, if you set yourself to "busy," this is disabled. So normally when someone sets themselves to busy, usually while working from home, it means they are likely off screwing around and don't want anyone to know. It's sort of funny they don't think anyone realizes why they set themselves to "busy" really.

Yeah, so I don't sign into mine. It's counter productive and distracting in what I do (I'm an accountant). I find that people stop thinking through questions they have and just fire away without thinking on IM, assuming I'm not in any sort of train of thought and I'm just going to drop what I'm doing immediately for them. If it's important enough, call me or email me.

In our case, you are logged in automatically on log in. You could exit, but I think unless you are the CEO, the boss above you is going to ask why. Especially when you are utilizing the work from home option. I think logging out of IM would go over like a fart in a diving helmet in that situation. As for email, that's normally about the worst option. My boss usually has about 400+ unread emails in her in box at any given time. IM is way more effective. My workplace is over 18k employees and the campus cover over 220 acres. The more means of communication we have, the better.
