Buy Low on Gates? (1 Viewer)

Gates is not practicing, and Rotoworld believes he will be shut down till at least the bye week.

Wll he come back this year and be serviceable, or are we seeing the very end of a HOF career?? I was surprised at his health and productivity last year, and though he may remain elite for a couple of more years.

I am now thinking Father Time has his number.

Sharkey move?

I think there is a pretty wide gap between what you'd want to offer to buy Gates low (to take on that risk) and what the Gates owner is willing to sell out (to give up on that potential upside).

Better be a buy very low. I don't see how you can count on this guy anymore.
Yep. I can see him coming back post-bye, putting up a couple of big games, and shutting down at the end of the season to rest fro playoffsRemember, he's only played 2 games since week nine of last year...if he can't get healthy with that much rest and treatment, I'm not real confident he ever will

Not interested. His name (and likely the combination of ego/draft pick of the guy that owns him) are just too much to overcome in trade. There are too many good TE options crossing the wire each week to give up an asset to acquire Gates.

i'd be willing to pick him off the WW in my 16x18 re-draft league, but I wouldn't bother in a league any smaller than that. I wouldn't bother in a dynasty league that uses contracts and/or salary.

Gates owner in one of my leagues (dynasty) offered him up openly. There have been no biters, so I contacted him.

I think the above assessment is right: There is a chasm b/t his real value and the owner's perceived value based on his history and upside if he returns to health. The reality though is the dude is 31 years old with a *nasty*, chronic foot injury. You'll probably get better production out of guys like Olsen from here on out...

As an owner of Gates in one of my dynasty leagues, I dont know what I would take for him. I really cant say. I think he's a hold for now b/c his value is at an absolute, all-time low.

In redraft, I would take what you could get and move on. He's not likely to play until at least Wk 7, and even then, that's not a given if he's your "TE1", but if you're looking to buy I think he's a great speculative buy-low for the stretch run.

Def buy low in dynasty. 31 is not very old for a TE. He may not get you many points this season but he will have value going into 2012+.
Wasn't this the mantra last year too?
He is struggling, sure. But I just don't see a foot injury as career-ending for a 31 year old. I'm talking dynasty, here. Redraft then certainly a waiver drop could be justified.

I don't think he's a Buy Low, rather a hold. As a dynasty owner I can say I wouldn't just dump Gates. IF he recovers, he still has 2 years of elite stats left in him, but that's such huge if that it's not really worth it to the buyer or the seller.

Plantar fasciitis (PF) is a very serious condition. There is no cure for a serious condition of PF -- I highly doubt he will ever be 100% again. Age is not the issue here, the seriousness of PF is.

Quite honestly I wouldn't be surprised if he retires after 2012 and only plays in less than 10 games the rest of his career.

The Chargers should put him on IR yet they haven't out of respect for Gates + hoping he somehow finds a miracle cure.

I wouldn't put Gates in the top 15 of TE dynasty rankings.

This. He needs to shut it down for a full year. They say that when you have this every step is like you are walking on broken glass.

10 team league and he was cut. I have Finley and added Gates for Finley's bye week. No harm if he doesn't play. I'd be cutting a backup WR for a TE when Finley is off any way.

Non Dynasty: Unless I'm in a league with 2 TE or more than 12 teams I wouldn't even pick Gates up off the waiver wire.

50:50 odds he suits up during the regular season. The Chargers are probably hoping he can come back for a playoff run.

Under the pretense Gates isn't coming back during the 2011 fantasy football season we have to upgrade Ryan Matthews and VJax. I would also downgrade Rivers as I expect the Chargers to run more.

Considering I think the Jets are a 7-8 win team the only games where the Chargers won't clearly be favored are week 9 home vs. GB, week 15 home vs. BAL and week 16 @ DET. The Chargers are looking like a 12-4 team.

ya, no way id carry finley and gates. i cut him in the league i have hernandez. not gonna carry 3 tes for 3 weeks.

I got offered Gates and McMichael i give LLoyd...almost tempted...I have Graham so I just need a bye week TE. Lloyd still has value...

I just traded Gates away in a PPR dynasty. I got Colston in return. This was after trying to trade him for a ton of players & getting no action.

I was thinking I would try and acquire Gates but this thread and the timing seems poor. No guarentee he plays and makes it through a week. His value is probably a little higher than if you bought prior to this week but still pretty low. Definitely a boom or bust move.

Would like to hear how many people who are being negative in this thread had him last year and how many people that are positive in this thread had him in prior years.

Many times it seems the opinions stated are influenced by that.

I just got him Tebow and Fitzpatrick for garçon and little....it's a redraft and my TE situation sucks with Keller and cook so I thought it was worth a gamble

Didn't Tim Duncan have PF as well?

And the guy is still playing and putting up decent stats.

He also plays in a sport that requires him to run for 48 mins a game..

I Think Antonio still has a couple of years left in him. He might not do good this season but I think next year he'll be back to being a top 3 TE..

The doctor on the audible last night basically said there was a 10% - 20% chance that he would tear the scarred tissue at the beginning of the season. If he can heal it in-season (hopefully after this week), then the probability goes back to somewhere around that figure. Thus you're probably looking at a static black/white situation, without much inbetween. Either it heals, he comes back, and makes it through the rest of the season (which returns him to a top 3 TE); it heals and then he retears it (which means you'd probably get a few games of top 3 TE production out of him); or it simply does not heal (which means you get 0).I think if you can get him relatively cheap, its definitely +EV, but as was stated above, boom or bust.
