Buyer beware: DA Grafix bait & switch (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
A lot of people in here use DA Grafix for site design work for the MFL leagues, so I wanted to pass along my recent troubling experience with DA Grafix to the community at large here so they don't make the same mistake I did.

A few years back, I paid Adam at DA Grafix $100 to design our league site for us that we use on MFL. I liked the work and figured it would be worth the money, especially since he told me it was a ONE-TIME FEE. He said once I paid the $100, I would NEVER have to pay another dime ever again. I could keep it forever to use for our site and never owe anything else. Once that was clearly established, I went ahead and contracted him to do the work for me. I was happy with the look of the site, and he even helped fix a few bugs the next year when certain links weren't pointing to the right place once the site rolled over to the next year. I have never once received a bill for anything after my initial payment. I have never been told I owe anything.

So now, in the past few days, our main banner (which I created) stopped displaying. I figured it must've been a glitch on the server or something. So I sent DA Grafix an email asking what's up, and here are the exchanges between myself and Sticks, who informed me that they were taking my site down if I don't pay them years' worth of fees. (And, in fact, they've already taken it all down now.)

First email from me:

You put this site together for us a while back and now in the last couple days, the main banner doesn't load anymore, and I believe that image is being hosted by you.

Please fix ASAP.

Thanks

Sticks' first response:

Hello,

Recently DA ran a server audit, this audit was to find leagues that have not paid the yearly renewal hosting maintenance fee with DA. Apparently your site was flagged since 2009.

You will need to renew this fee, to bring current, up to date with DA. At the cost of 60 dollars.

Apologize for any inconvenience, as soon as you upgrade the site will rebuild itself.

Thank you.

DA.

You can submit payment through the website by custom quote by stix or paypal to dasticks@gmail.com

Thank you

My response:

What yearly fee? I was never told about this. Ever. I asked if I would simply pay one time for the setup, and that was it, and that's how I was told it would be. And why was I never contacted by anyone about this? This is ridiculous. I want to talk to the person that built my site!

Sticks' response:

Well I am sorry if it was not told, however you are speaking to the guy who built the site, and owns DA.

Your site went unnoticed without renewing, and you are not the only site.

The normal fee yearly is @20 going forward.

Thank you.

Sticks

My response:

I have spoken to the person who built my site about minor fixes and corrections since it was first built, and I don't recall that being you. It was very clearly explained to me before I paid for the site design that it was a one-time fee and I would never need to pay anything ever again even if I kept the league running for years and years. Why am I now being told three years later that I owe money contrary to what I've been consistently told before and after I paid for the product? That's bait and switch to tell me there's no charge until afterward.

Sticks' response:

The person that helped with your site Adam is no longer with DA, and again I am sorry for the inconvenience.

However your being told now, because we flagged this site in an audit.

We are requiring all to renew to current, that keeps your site running on our server, scripts, graphics.

Thank you

Sticks

My response:

It's not an inconvenience. It's taking my money. And so because he no longer works for your company, that means you can start back-charging me for things that I was never told I'd have to pay for? This is how you are going to do business?

Sticks' final response:

Hello

I am not arguing about this, feel free to not pay to renew, I will start the process to shut the site down.

You can host it yourself.

If the site goes down, and you change your mind, the cost will be 100, which includes a setup fee.

Have a good day

That dude has been ripping people off for years over there. I thought he was actually banned from the site 5 or 6 years ago, but I guess not. I used to be really active over there but a few people like Sticks really ruined it for those that truly wanted to upgrade their league websites by learning what others in the past willingly past on to the benefit of the MFL.com forum community as a whole. A lot of the quality developers that were there from the beginning moved on long time ago.

That's too bad. They really need to put a big sticky up over there warning people about this guy's business habits.

Hopefully you were able to save a backup copy of your site (graphics and css file) so you can upload it all yourself.

I hate to say it but, buyer beware.

Good Luck

Sorry, don't know anything about this particular company, but bandwidth isn't free. It's unrealistic to think that they could support you hosting your site forever, despite their promises. That sort of business practice is unsustainable unless they're serving ads on your site or something.

Of course, they should supply you with the images and other resources you paid them to design. You say you made the banner, then you should have a copy of it. Put it on photobucket.com and reference it there.

What else were they hosting?

Page backgrounds and menu graphics, stuff like that. Yes, I have the banner I made and am hosting it myself now.

I had a site done and all of my graphics the site did were uploaded to a Photobucket account for me. I can do whatever I want to the site now. I would name the site, but it is shut down now.

If it's not too late, I would try to save all the images to your own Photobucket and then you can add them yourself. And change your commish password too.

If you're just talking about images like team avatars and banners then go back to last years right click save as image on all banners and avatars then host yourself. If you have a lot it will take awhile but at least you don't have to deal with that dude.

our site did the same thing.

i just had the coding taken out and used an MFL template. all of our team banners, etc were paid for, and i have copies of them just in case.

they tried to get me to pay for back seasons as well. wasn't going to do that. since I also was never told about it.

This is true. They messed up by not explaining the difference between paying for a design (which is a one-time fee) and paying for hosting. I don't use MFL and what I have seen makes me wonder why it is so popular, but are they hosting the entire league on their servers? If so their fees are reasonable. If all they are doing is hosting the images that make up the design, then they are ripping you off.I figured MFL hosted their own leagues. If that's the case and you pay MFL separately for hosting your league, then request that they give you all images and the template in html, host the images somewhere free (there are tons of options) and simply do a find and replace on all <img src="replacethis.jpg"> tags.

MFL is hosting the site, and I'm paying them for that. It's too late to get the template, because he took it down yesterday after the email exchange in the original post.

i would just have the graphics you paid for sent to you by email and hot them on photobucket.

that's what our league does.

i would expect they will send you the graphics, but like someone else said, it is not realistic for them to host said graphics forever.

setting up and storing on photobucket only takes a minute.

hope it works out for you.

we have always been happy with the work done by them, but again, i just put the graphics right to photobucket.

DA Grafix did it to another guy, and he had saved his original email from the company saying it was a one-time fee:

Adam, hello.

I think that within the next few weeks I will be purchasing one of your templates for our MFL site, but I have a few questions regarding the templates. What do you need from me in order to create a template? What sort of information do you need from me? If I’m getting work done by sticks, do you need that prior to starting? One last thing. Once purchased, can this template be carried from year to year until I decide to change it?

Thank you for your time and hope to hear from you soon regarding what I need to do next to get the ball rolling.

Adam’s Reply

Hi Jerry,

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. The template is a one time fee of $125 and can be used from season to season.

Once payment is received, I'll setup a test site and begin the design process for your template.

For the Template I will need to know the following:

#1. Type (Full Screen Width or Fixed Width)

Examples: Full Screen Fixed Width

#2. Color Scheme or Theme for the template.

#3. Navigation (Visit the sites below and test out the navigation/tabs on each one)

Examples: Option 1 Option 2 Option 3 Option 4 Option 5 Option 6

NOTE: Any of the examples above can be tweaked to suit the needs for your league.

#4 Content for your homepage, for example, any MFL modules, widgets, babes, games, etc. Many choices here, so if you need any ideas, just check out the previous sites linked eariler.

If you have any additional questions, just let me know.

Thanks, and I'm looking forward to working with you on your 2009 site.

Adam

Sounds to me the one time fee is for the template, not the template hosting.
Well, that may be, but they never mentioned any fee for the hosting. Not once. And they never tried to collect it. Just shut the site down three years later with no warning.
