Brown vetoes bill to allow non-citizens on juries

http://www.sfgate.com/news/us/article/Brown-vetoes-bill-to-allow-non-citizens-on-juries-4876162.php

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) Gov. Jerry Brown has vetoed a bill that would have allowed non-citizens who are legal residents to serve as jurors in California.

"Jury service, like voting, is quintessentially a prerogative and responsibility of citizenship," Brown said in an announcement Monday accompanying his veto of AB1401. "This bill would permit lawful permanent residents who are not citizens to serve on a jury. I don't think that's right."
I agree with this.
I have a concern over the failure of these people to assimilate and the assault on our culture.
Now you're just being ridiculous and scared. Xenophobia is worse than immigrants to society as a whole. Lot's of immigrants are here legally. Seems with your attitude you have a problem with them also.
You should see certain parts of Los Angeles like Huntington Park, where you can drive for miles and not see a sign in English.
I live in SoCal, and lived in the Bay Area for years. I've driven to LA and SD more than I can count. Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco are not English names. Maybe you need to move to New England or something.

Why is this a problem? I love Huntington Park. For a commercial real estate agent like myself, it's exciting to drive down Pacific Avenue and see no vacancies, with store after store crammed together, and hundreds of people (mostly Latinos) walking up and down the street at all hours. It's one of the most alive, most vibrant, most capitalist areas in Los Angeles county. And you're complaining because there are no signs in English? You're missing out.
It was not racist at all, but instead a concern. They seek to be separate from our culture.

what is "our culture" exactly?

You seem to think it's easy for immigrants to assimilate into American culture, when they have met resistance from natural citizens for decades. You being a perfect example.

Despite their attempts to form their own communities, the Little Italys and Chinatowns and the Lower East Side of New York, their children learned English and became Americanized, and became part of our strength. You compare them to the immigrants of an earlier generation, but of course there are tremendous differences. The Jews, Polish, Italians, Irish, etc., yes they huddled in the big cities and caused crime and spoke their own languages, all that is true, but what is also true is that they all aspired to be assimilated. They encouraged their children to speak English, to achieve within the structure of our capitalistic society. Do the illegal aliens from south of the border encourage their kids to speak English? No, they demand bilingual education. They seek to be separate from our culture, they don’t contribute to the old idea of the melting pot, and they retain an antagonism towards American values. This is what I was getting at when I spoke of not seeing a sign in English in a city like Huntington Park.

Spanish is a European language spoken by many a culture outside of Mexico. It's not even native to the whole continent like English isn't as well. Many cities have different languages on their storefront signs, and many cultures always point out that in order to keep their native culture, they still must speak in the native tongue.

Spanish is also the language of a huge emerging social, economical, and political market. Are you going to demand that a Cuban/Dominican baseball player speak English first before he can play in the league? Are you saying Spanish surnames should be changed once they come into the US? Are you saying people should be stripped of their own culture to make you more comfortable? Should English be spoken over Gaelic? Italian? Russian? The Bronx? Oakland?

Do-gooders like you here honestly believe this is an anti-immigrant issue, when its not.

This is a good thread. I'm proud to have started it. I have started many threads on this same issue, and will likely start many more.

http://www.seattlepi.com/news/us/article/Immigrants-to-seek-California-driver-licenses-5989778.php

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — California on Friday will start taking driver's license applications from the nation's largest population of immigrants in the country illegally.

The state Department of Motor Vehicles expects 1.4 million people will seek a license in the first three years of a program aimed at boosting road safety and making immigrants' lives easier.

California officials say they can't predict how many people will line up immediately to apply, but the number of people making appointments for a license more than doubled when immigrants were allowed to sign up. Appointments are required to apply for a license except at four newly-created DMV offices.

California is one of 10 states that now provide licenses to immigrants in the country illegally. The licenses issued to immigrants without legal status will include a distinctive marking and are not considered a valid form of federal identification.

Immigrants in the country illegally have not been allowed to apply for a driver's license in California since the state began requiring proof of legal presence during the 1990s.

Immigrant advocates have cheered the licenses as a way to integrate immigrants who must drive to work and shuttle children to school. But critics have questioned state officials' ability to verify the identity of foreign applicants, citing security concerns.

Law enforcement officials say the program will improve road safety because licensed drivers must be tested and insured. A DMV study of 23 years of crash data found that unlicensed drivers were more likely to cause a fatal collision than licensed drivers.

State insurance officials hope the change will increase the number of drivers holding auto insurance, though some immigrants say they have always held insurance even though they could not get a license.

Maritza Aguirre, 30, is one of them. She used to take a two-hour bus trip to work cleaning houses in driving-dependent Southern California. Now, she drives but lacks a license and fears her car might be impounded if she is ever stopped by police.

"For me, honestly, it is a blessing," said Aguirre, who has an appointment this week to apply for a license. "The relief of knowing they won't take your car is a big advantage."

Advocates have encouraged immigrants to seek the license. But they are warning those with deportation orders or criminal records to first seek legal advice since law enforcement can access DMV data.

Applicants must submit proof of identity and state residency and pass written and road tests. Those who don't possess foreign government-issued identification on a list of approved documents can be interviewed by a DMV investigator to see if they qualify.

Starting on Friday, immigrants who pass the initial hurdles will get a driving permit. But they must return for a driving test before they can get the new licenses, which will be marked with the words "federal limits apply."

Not questioning the law here, but don't you have to give an address of some kind?
