Called the cops on my neighbors yesterday (1st world problems) (1 Viewer)

If you are truly sorry about how you handled it (calling cops first without talking to them first), then apologize. If not, don't.

My ex-neighbors in the house behind mine would routinely hang out on their back patio chatting and laughing well into the night. On occasion they would wake our young kids which would in turn bug my wife, but I figured that by 11:30 or midnight if they stopped I'd be okay with that. Usually that's when they were done. But there were a handful of nights when it went on well after 1am or even 2am. One night around 2:15 I had enough and went out into the backyard and politely asked them to quiet down. The response I got over the fence was a derisive "Yeah yeah yeah." When 5 minutes later they hadn't stopped I called the police. Not long after that they stopped. And that was the last time they made that noise past about 10pm ever again; I'm guessing the police informed them of the time the noise ordinance kicks in. No regrets calling the police for this.
You called the cops because your neighbors were talking loud? You sound like a real ****
It's never hard to figure out who the loud, obnoxious neighbor types are on this board...

I'm not loud at all. Someone talking loud enough so I can hear them is not going to result in me calling the cops.

Total richard move to call the police w/out ever talking to the guy. Really, would it have been that hard to walk down the street and have a 10 minute conversation with him. Very poor form.

Are people really playing the victim card for the law breaker here?

1) Neighber breaks legislated law to the point of annoying the hell out the guy.

2) The guy violates some unwritten social rule by calling the police.

3) The law breaking neighbor is now the victim.

REALLY?!?

Nobody's playing the victim card.

Merely suggesting that, even though the OP is technically right, it's likely in his best interest to handle this in a manner more likely to foster to a friendly neighbor relationship.

Or, and this is just me thinking outside the box, maybe the doosh with the trucks could have handled it in a more friendly neighborly way. By you know not parking his large trucks and crap in front of other people's houses like he is king of the neighborhood. I know that's crazy.

Exactly! The law wouldn't even exist if not for the ##### that do this ####.

But the unwritten social rule, GASP!!! he broke it

Well I personally would have confronted him long ago. It's just how I am. But I have no problem with someone calling the cops every time they came home and found his crap in front of their house. Some folks don't handle confrontation well. And the first time something unexplained happened to my house if I did call the cops well let's just say a misspent youth does come with some skills learned.

I wouldn't apologize. I can't stand neighbors that are rude. We all know when we're doing something that would annoy the neighbors and we don't have any right to expect anyone to put themselves in an awkward situation to confront the annoyance.

I live in a small townhouse with a small backyard in staten island, but one place i lucked out in is neighbors. We couldnt live next to nicer and quieter people. Zero complaints.

Every neighbor within two houses of me is retired. I'm not sure they have the energy to be annoying.

I don't feel bad for the neighbor and I wouldn't apologize. I'm sure he knows he shouldn't be parking equipment in the neighborhood.

This is ultimately what the "no cops" crowd is getting at, I think.

If discussing the issue doesn't get it worked out, fine, call the cops. There's probably not a neighborly relationship worth preserving at that point.

But calling the cops before a couple of face to face attempts have been made is a bit of ##### move.

I'm the OP. Here's an update, I'm not expecting many to believe me but this is the god's honest truth.

I finally talked to the guy, I apologized for calling the cops on him, he apologized for leaving big equipment out, said he never really thought it was an issue, despite the liability concerns on his end if anything happened. Both sides shared some fault here and could have done things different. But it turned out all good, shook hands, the whole 9 yards.

Meanwhile, he's got this giant orange snow plow in his driveway. Showed me around it, how he was getting ready to sell it...to Browns LT Joe Thomas. Apparently, Joe has a very large plot of land about 45 minutes from where we live (in Wisco) and my neighbor has helped him develop the property, even bringing his big excavator over there to clear some trees and so forth. He showed me photos on his phone of Joe operating this piece of equipment.

So end of the day, it is all good and water under the bridge. I'm not really a big sports memorabilia guy, but am thinking maybe a signed Joe Thomas item (I'm a UW grad too) may be cool and neighbor would oblige. How things have changed after just a few days.

And he might turn into a guy who can help get stuff done at your house. I am friends with all of my neighbors and have been for almost 20 years. Most people are not d i cks, if you just make that connection. We stay here in large part because of the people here. Some have annoying habits or things that bother us, so we tell them. Not a big deal.

what's the big deal about trucks parked on the street anyhow?
Whats the big deal with a stove and a car on blocks in the front yard?

Anybody else have a picture now of moops sitting in the bathtub thats on bricks in his yard, drinking a busch light, and yelling senselessly at 2am on a wednesday, then getting upset when the cops are called by his neighbor.

I don't think you were being a ####. I think you were being a #####.

That's not how a man handles his business in my book. Why were you afraid to go talk to him?

Is this before or after he takes a bath with his kids?

Just tell them your wife was the one who called but used your phone cuz he phone was sitting in a bowl of rice after she spilled her drink on it.
My wife just sent me a text from someone she wants me to pick up a table from. He lady's excuse for not getting back sooner was that her son dropped the phone in water and she has to sit it in a bag of rice.

See how much easier talking about things is. I am actually surprised at the number of people here that would not just walk over as a first solution. I would hate to live near you.

Same time perhaps?

The guy could have walked over and asked his neighbors if they were cool with him breaking the law before doing it. Just doing it without talking about it first is the #### thing to do.

This.

And I've had to do it a number of times living in an apt building in NYC. If its in my building, I always talk to my neighbors first.

I guess moops is ok with having his kids routinely woken up by loud inconsiderate neighbors. Not me.

They are a nice-enough 60-ish couple, .

Now it finally came to a head last night, when I just sort of snapped. In retrospect, I should have just knocked on their door and dealt with it, but I'm not sure it would have solved the bigger problem. For the last two and a half days I've had a super-large orange snow-plow parked in front of my house - basically a Giant dump truck with a plow blade on front.
Based on this information, ask him if you can use his truck to plow his daughter.
