CAMERON GIVES UP PLAY CALLING by Michael David Smith (Profootball talk)
One of the most important qualifications that Cam Cameron had to be the Miami Dolphins' head coach was that he had shown an ability to call plays as the offensive coordinator of the San Diego Chargers.
So it's a little surprising that Cameron has now given up play-calling duties.
Jeff Darlington of the Miami Herald reports that, starting with Sunday's 40-13 loss to the New York Jets, tight ends coach Mike Mularkey called the offensive plays, and quarterback Trent Green, who's on injured reserve, relayed the calls in to starting quarterback John Beck. But Cameron was evasive when reporters asked him about it.
''It was just something that Trent and I had been talking about, and something where he's been actively involved and he's done it before,'' said Cameron, per Darlington. "I wouldn't read too much into that.''
When a reporter asked, "So Trent is just relaying what you're saying?'' Cameron wouldn't come right out and say whose calls Green was relaying, replying with, "Yeah, he just relays the call to the quarterback. That's the only difference.''
Darlington reports that another reporter later asked, "So he's repeating what you're telling him?'' Cameron responded: "He's repeating the play call. You got it.''
The Palm Beach Post reports that second-string quarterback Cleo Lemon was a bit more forthright about the way play calling has changed.
"Cam was calling the plays," Lemon said. "The plays didn't come from anybody else. They came from Cam. Now they come from upstairs."
Mularkey spent two years as the Bills' head coach and eight years as an assistant for the Steelers, and he has experience calling plays. But considering that the Dolphins' offense looked as bad as it has looked all season on Sunday, giving this responsibility to Mularkey might not have been the best idea.
Ugh....Mularkey is awful. If this is true since Cam was brought in because he was an offensive genious (which I thought was always suspect) could this signal the beginning of the end for Cam? It's not often that teams dismiss their HC's after one year but an 0-16 season doesn't happen often either.
