Campbell competing for #2 in Wash (1 Viewer)

I thought he had a shot at starting so...

ORLANDO, March 29 -- Washington Redskins Coach Joe Gibbs said Wednesday that Jason Campbell, a first-round draft pick last year, will be given a chance in training camp and during the preseason to win the No. 2 quarterback job behind starter Mark Brunell.

Campbell was third on the depth chart last season behind Brunell and Patrick Ramsey. But with Ramsey having been traded to the New York Jets, Gibbs said that Campbell will compete with free agent newcomer Todd Collins for the job as next season's primary backup.

This is Gibbs' way of keeping the pressure on Campbell to learn and improve. Nothing to see here. He's the #2 and barring disastrous performances (plural) in the preseason, the #2 he'll remain during the season.

Could this be one of those situations where he's the number 2 during a game, but Collins is the starter if Brunell is out for an extended period? I belive this happened with another team recently but the club is escaping me.

Yeah but not too long ago he was expected to get a decent shot at starting so I see this as a decent measuring stick toward his progress. Maybe in 2007

I wouldn't be surprised if the opposite were true. Collins knows Saunders' system and would presumably be ready to pick up in the middle of a game when needed. Give the defense a week to plan against Collins, and you're looking at a long day, but he'd be able to manage a half or so.

I wonder how rusty Collins is
Why? Isn't 5 pass attempts in the last 2 years, 27 attempts in the last 7 years, enough to stay fresh? He has a 70.4 career rating ;)

Hmm, that would make sense too. I might have been thinking of Philly last year, who did what you just outlined: Detmer was the #2 and relieved McNabb early in the season, but McMahon started when Donovan got injured.

I remember when Jonathan Quinn Medicine Woman was brought in to the Bears with Terry Shea because 'he knew the system'.

Hopefully Saunders doesn't make the same mistake with Collins.

:goodposting: That's my interpretation too.

Believe me, we in Washington have plenty of experience with that, what with Spurrier bringing in Wuerffel and Matthews and an assortment of "cheap and available" Gator wide receivers because they knew his precious system. :yucky:

True, but Saunders is not Spurrier. neither is Gibbs. In all honesty, if Collins took over a game or started, his main job would be to hand off to Portis and occasionally find Cooley and the midget trio, just enough to keep the D honest.

I hope you don't think that I fail to recognize the difference between Spurrier and his crew, and Gibbs and his crew. :o

I would certainly hope so, I'm just saying I wouldn't be so worried about the QBs the coaches with a clue brought in. Then again, maybe you aren't worried and are just pointing out the past.

Jason Campbell = dynasty gold in '07
I think he could be next year. He has incredible tools around him to step in an succeed early. Brunell is not the answer, not sure if the Skins' staff agrees with me though.

Brunell made plays and was an excellent driver of that offense when he was healthy last year. I'm not ready to write him off. The healthy Brunell more than justifies Gibbs' faith in him. He makes good decisions and makes good throws, and avoids devastating mistakes. He takes sacks and throws the balls away when those options are appropriate. It's also obvious that the team likes him and rallies around him. He's a leader.

Are there a half-dozen or eight other QB's who I could list who I'd rather have QB'ing my team? Yes, of course, but then that was also true of Theisman, Williams and Rypien, each of whom won a Super Bowl for Gibbs. If they can, Brunell can.

For me, the real issue is health. If he's healthy, I'm happy with him starting. If not, then . . . I guess we'll be seeing Campbell.
