Can a landlord ask this? (1 Viewer)

Because you would have to be desperate for a place to live to even consider this place. So, I was just curious about your circumstances. Why can't you stay in your current place?
I already left the last place and I've been staying for almost two months with my girl until I find a new place.

i left because the roommates were horrible. Low class aggressive ghetto people who made it miserable to live there and there was no reasoning with them whenever there were disputes because they essentially have the mentality of an animal

yes I am pretty desperate and it's hard to find a place I can afford and not live with ghetto people which is why I may have to request a transfer to another city

A room. 3 rentals in the apartment.

Go back and forth?

edit. It's a 3 floor home. The landlords live on the ground floor and they rent out 3 bedrooms in both the basement and second floor. So 6 room rentals altogether.
Likely you are all "roommates," but city code probably allows only x number of unrelated people at same home and 6 >x

So it's likely illegal?

maybe I should move in, get some mail, and stop paying rent for a couple years while it goes through housing court

Why do you consider it strange?
i've known people that rented for years, and i have rented places, and i have never heard of anybody saying they couldn't get mail sent to the location they are renting. just sounds like a hastle not sure why you would want to deal with

What city do you live in now? What is your job? Is it feasible that you could get a transfer request accepted? Where would you move?

Is it like slumlords or are they just trying to get by and fudging the code. You can look up their zoning classification then refer to city code to find out permissible and illegal uses for that property based on the code.

But if you're cool with the mailing assorted and like the place, then rent from them Andy be happily and probably pay less than market value. Some day the city may come after them, but they usually give everyone a pretty wide berth in letting them straighten it out in a few months.

I would not feel good ethically going in to strategically beat them out of rent without knowing their situation and whether they deserve it.

NYC

I work in an office. I don't want to get in to specifics on the Internet.

We have about 15 offices around the country. Any one of them would be more affordable and I don't have much keeping me on NY.

Ive already contacted my supervisor that I wanted to speak to him in person. He may not be in the office again until September.

i think it would be best to discuss my concerns in person.

I wasn't really being serious.

i am not looking to get in to another hostile living situation after getting out of one that lasted over a year.

Not much keeping you in NYC? What about your girl? No other obligations outside of work in NYC? No clubs, hobbies, groups, etc.?

Don't know the place is pretty strict

no mail, no cooking, no noise, no guests, no sex, no drinking,no smoking, no drugs, no snoring, etc

Is this place a covenant and are you becoming a nun?

Call the local city/town - someone should have some kind of records on the property.  Also, any reputable property manager would not ask that question.  So just heed the obvious red flag and move on.
Agree. This sounds like the type of landlord that'll let himself into your apartment while you're out just to make sure everything is on the up and up. Or to steal your underwear.
