Can we all please stop overreacting to one week? (1 Viewer)

Raider Nation

Devil's Advocate
Here's what we've "learned" in the shark pool after one week:

* Matt Leinart sucks - he can't possibly get any better

* Cedric Benson sucks because he played a nasty run defense

* MJD was a one-year wonder - time to panic

* Steven Jackson lost Pace - let's see if I can trade him for Curry

* Joey Harrington is completely useless

* Romeo Crennel is the worst coach in the NFL

(Okay, so those last two are accurate)

Relax, people. One week is one week. Three or four weeks is a trend. Let things play out.

Two things:

1) I completely agree that some of these threads around here are insufferable.

2) I vow to pay absolutely ZERO attention to pre-season next year as it tells us ABSOLUTELY NOTHING worthwhile in regards to how good a team or an individual player will be.

That is all.

Some of these things will end up true...some will not. That's why they are discussed.

Can we please not have every other post be a "stop overreacting" post?

True that...the only value from preseason can be had from actually watching the games and seeing what players standout out on a talent level (Jacoby Jones / James Jones etc.). But to just look at stats or records is worthless.

Years ago when I first started playing FF..I would panic after 2 weeks and the Sharks would move in and fleece my team.

Give it 4 weeks before you see a pattern. I don`t think Big Ben and Romo are going to throw 64 TD passes, I don`t believe Brees will not throw a TD pass this year. Ronald Curry will not break the single season catch record.

Reggie Bush will not average under 50 total yards a game.

One thing I am pretty sure of now is that Randy Moss is going to be the steal of the draft.

I agree with this to a certain point however, there are 2 sides to every story. Yes, you can wait 4-5 weeks for example to see if a guy like V. Davis or Leinart turns it around. This very well could just be a 1 week situation. However, if it 5 weeks these guys still look awful and a trend is developing, you are essentially dead in the water. These guys will have no trade value and most of the waiver wire "wonders" will be gone. So, while I agree with you statement in overall theory, you can't afford not to worry a little.

I think the problem lies in that statements are made as fact, not as speculation. Writers need to take care in understanding how the stuff they type will be interpreted. If people were to qualify their opinions and concerns as such you wouldn't have the "stop over-reacting" posts. The Internet has given us an explosion of information. Along with that comes a proportionally sized explosion of misinformation. One could even make the argument that the percent that's misinformation is even larger because there's no accountability for making absurd statements.Welcome to the Interweb. Its a magical place.

Put one more thread on the 'useless' list.
 Threads complaining about week 1 overreactions aren't any better than the threads being complained about.
And yet, both of you not only clicked on the topic, but were compelled enough to reply.Would that be irony?

Is 2 seasons and 1 week enough of a trend for Benson or should we evaluate him over the long-term? Say 5 seasons? :)

overreacting? overreacting? who's overreacting? its not like anyone's traded away their starting QB or anything.

It's only one week, but that doesn't mean it doesn't count. Some of the "overreactions" will prove to have been the proper reaction. The trick is figuring out what's a trend and what's a mirage.

he/that bolds well

Don't over-react to the over-reacting.

I would be scared if people were under-reacting. I had over-reacting much higher on my board for week 1 and 2. :juggernaut:
