Can you negotiate with DirecTV? (4 Viewers)

Looks like I'm making the call tonight. Bill went up to $93 from $59.
I was going to call after the Extra Innings preview ends this weekend. Let us know if you're trying to get a deal on this and if you get one, since I'm going to have to make this call next week.

Ouch. Just called. Weren't playing ball. Offered $10 and I said that's $83 when TwC Is offering $80w/ internet. Then she went into asking me when I want my services canceled.

I said I can't cancel until I talk to my wife. :bag:
Are you sure you got retention? I've had much greater difficulty getting to the retention department the last few times I called, even after saying, "cancel service" each time the prompt comes up with the computer.

I said cancel service. It then asked if I wanted to change my package, or cancel account. I said cancel account.

I'll try again tonight. Any other tips? I tried playing the whole "I don't want to, but the wife thinks TWC is a better deal" and this lady wasn't having it. She might've just been dumped and bitter about relationships.
You still might not have gotten retention. The same thing happened to me in August. Ask whoever you speak with if they are with the Retention Dept. If not, ask to be transferred and you will be. But, obviously, confirm with the next person that they are in retention.

Tell them you want to cancel. Schedule a date for 2 weeks so you can coordinate the new service your going with

Then call back later and cancel the cancellation

I think the "key" to getting a great deal is being serious when you say, "I am about to walk away and go with "X" company." The last 3 times that I have called I was willing to pull the trigger and cancel and go with a local provider.

I agree 100%.

Yep they speak to hundreds of customers a week. They can sniff out a guy whos just trying to get a discount and won't really cancel a mile away.

 When my contract ends in a month or two I'm expecting some excellent discounts, or I'll just head back to Comcast.

I've never been serious and always get a deal...but I always call just before football season when the Sunday ticket deals are ripe for the picking.

I did. With my 2 year contract they called my bluff. It would've cost me $240 to cancel.
I guarantee you that if you tell the 1st person "Cancel ME!" you will be given to another agent who will try to get you to stay. Again, I would drop them for 240 bucks if it meant a better deal with another company. In fact, another company MAY purchase your buy out to switch.

Gonna have to take a look at Direct TV....again. Even though I negotiated a 2 year deal with my cable company last year (went back through my old facebook posts to make sure), they're claiming it was 2 years ago and that I'm no longer entitled to the pricing we agreed to. So now I get to do the silly song and dance of getting to their retention department and forcing them to back down.

It really is just so silly. It blows my mind that these companies aren't required to put the terms of agreements like this in writing.

I am almost certain that I read that DirectTV would not be offering customer retention deals going forward. I googled but can't find it, but I think I read it a couple months ago. Anyone else see that, or am I dreaming?

I did cancel for a month last year. The month of June. Called back in July and got all the new customer promos.

Does Comcast still have the Internet Plus package for new subscribers that gives you Internet, some cable, and HBO for about $50-60/month? If so, I'm ready to dump Comcast, roll with Internet through CenturyLink for a month or two, then go back and grab the Internet Plus package from Comcast.

Yep, just got it with an HD box for $70/month for one year, all in. Escalates to $80/month after a year if you don't call. Can tack on the Sports Package during NFL season for $7/mo to get RedZone - without having to subscribe to a base video package first. This supplements my Sunday Ticket primary TV as a secondary TV beautifully without "technically" having a second cable subscription. DirecTV wants a first-born for a second box, so this is the way to go if your ISP is Comcast.

I've never threatened to quit. When my bill jumped, I called and simply said I can't afford the current bill. Can they do anything to get it closer to where it was. I've never been disappointed and haven't paid for the NFL ticket for the past two seasons.

I assume it also helps if you've been a long time customer.

I gave up begging for Sunday Ticket last year. Being in a rural area, I get east and west coast feeds and with MNF, TNF and SNF I get about half the games anyway.

A few weeks back, one of my old receivers blew, so I called them about an upgrade. Two room Genie was free with install with no fee above what I already pay. $20/month off my bill for a year. $5/month off bill for 2 years if I keep Sports Pack. Free Showtime and Encore for 6 months. That's good enough to keep me. Cable is terrible here and I'm not going back.

I will be very interested to see if this goes through, meaning DirecTV becomes a business unit of AT&T, how this affects NFL Sunday Ticket negotiations going forward. I could see AT&T pushing to keep it exclusive to DirecTV to keep customers subscribed to its new business unit if the deal clears.

Would be nice to get a discount on a bundle of AT&T wireless and DirecTV service. Time will tell.

Bill went hot hey werent playing around, ended up getting my bill down to $82.00 asked about ticket and they said you'll never get it again for free two years in a row. Is that true? They said maybe half off, I'll try again late July

has anyone tried their new 'wireless' feature they've been pushing in their commercials
I had it installed last month and it is awesome. The installer said it has a range of about 80-100 feet or so. My router is in my family room and I have one wireless box downstairs in the basement and one upstairs in the bedroom and haven't had any issues at all.

Is it like a hdmi stick to make it wireless?

They give you a completely separate wireless router that is plugged in to your main genie box. That router broadcasts to small wireless boxes wherever you have your tvs. It basically creates a "DirecTV" wireless network separate from your home wireless network. I had to mess around with the placement of the router a bit to get full signal strength on both wireless boxes but have had times when when the signal strength was only fair and still had no issues watching tv.

every time I see this thread title I hear Jim Morrison saying, "you can't petition the lord with prayer."

carry on.

Huh? just threaten to cancel and they'll hook you up........

I just threatened to cancel and the lady said when do you want to cancel???

I set a date two weeks out thinking I was calling her bluff but she went ahead and set it up

Whats the move here? I'm thinking of calling back in a few days and seeing what they can offer to keep me as a customer

Ouch....my biggest fear on those calls.I bet when you call back you'll get a better rep that's willing to work with you.

Is the biggest difference b/w Dish and direct still the NFL network and wireless router? Or is there something else out there I should be looking for?

I know when i was signing up dish didnt have amc. That meant no walking dead which was pretty much the reason i went directv

Dish has AMC.

i just go back and forth between dish and directv every 2 years. you get the best deals and keep up with the latest equipment.
Just a basic package? I can't see doing this with multiple DVR's and the whole shebang.
Yeah, its just one tv. hbo and a normal package. Its a one day pain in the butt, not a big deal. I leave the roof brackets on so they just hook up their dish, wiring is already there.

I'm a directv and att customer. Hoping this takeover will mean I can bundle and save something.
I am really unhappy to hear this is going down. Bye bye directv customer support, hello Manila. They will likely lose me as a customer.

So I was planning on tucking my tail and calling them tomm to see what they can do to keep me as a customer. I'm glad I held out because the retention line called me to negotiate. The lady gave me a one time acct credit of $40. $20 off a month for 6 months. Free premium channels for 6 months. Some sports package for a month and hd movie channels for 6 months

Much better than what they were offering first. So the tactic of calling to cancel then not being satisfied & setting a disconnect date works. Just make sure to set the date for a few weeks and wait for the phone to ring

Or just cancel. I canceled in June last year, re-upped in August and got all the new customer goodies.
