Can you negotiate with DirecTV? (3 Viewers)

Well, just officially got my last bill with the discounted pricing. My deal runs out on May 23rd. I'll call them back in the next week or so and set up my cancellation date for the 23rd in hopes of being able to get a good deal from them. We'll see.

I don't know if you have been following the thread but last year, that was exactly what happened to most callers.  The good news was that once everyone went ahead with the cancellation (not threatening, but actually scheduling the cancallation) the incredible deals opened up.

I got by far my biggest deal ever from Direct TV last year after goung the cancellation route.

We are waiting to see if that works again this year.
No, I hadn't been paying too much attention. I've got a year left on my deal, and the fee would be like $130 or $170, something like that. Can't remember what she said. So when you say schedule the cancellation, you mean identifying a date that you want it turned off?

Correct. I called last year and told them a shut off date. 2 hours later I was bombarded with calls from them offering me a deal to get me back. Hoping to do it again this year.

Exactly.

They changed the policy last year where few if any deals appeared on the computer screens for the reps to quote you if you just threatened to cancel.

So someone figured out that once they set up an actual cancellation date, that all of a sudden huge deals came out of no where.

We even setup a script last year that we all tried to follow to make sure we maximized the incredible goodies they gave out last year.

Many of our deals are about to expire so we are waiting to see how to approach it this year.

Don't forget to ask about the strange wording on the $33 off per month from our bill which looks like you could easily interpet it as a 2 year savings.

Good call on that one. Just checked and it still definitely says: 2-Year Savings: $37 off $91.99 for months 1-12 (12 of 12)

Hopefully a bunch of people actually do start to cancel and they rethink their strategy. I'm not there yet, but prob will be in a few months.

I'd switch in a heartbeat, but getting someone to come out, install new equipment, etc. is just such a ####### headache.

Yeah, the wording is contradictory at best.

I am sure it was suppose to be a 1 year deal but I am going to play dumb and maybe even say I was told this would be a 2 years savings.

Let me know how this works out... It looks like they'll just tell you to #### off at this point. ####### AT&T

The threatening to cancel and negotiating game had to be stupid business for them. The actual barriers to switching are high, mostly annoying but no one enjoys the process. Especially so when the NFL package was exclusive. Some 30 year old male customer calls every year to cancel, and you give away your best product for free in the name of retention? But where's the guy really going to go? With threads like this all over the net too? I'd have to see the numbers, but the retention play vs. what was given away in discounts if they could weed out who would have seriously left has got to be a loser. Surprising it went on as long as it did.

I called and set a cancel date 30 days out last week. You cant schedule any longer than that.

Haven't heard anything as of yet. My cancel date is May 22nd.

we shall see ~

We are new DTV subscribers, got it installed sunday. We have been long time ATT cell phone users, so we got some good discounts and unlimited data on our phones for bundling it all up. WE have a 2 year deal so we'll see how it goes.

We came from cable vision cable, nothing against them, but nothing was keeping me there either.

by big rub however is the way the sold us the package, we got a 5TV package....1 main and 4 mini genies. We are a family of 4 who will often watch TVs in different rooms, esp at night. 2 kids in their room, wife in our room and I work at night in the basement studio, so I'll have the TV on there We also have a family TV in the den, where I consider that our 'main room'. When we inquired about the service, we said "We can watch 4s at once?" ---Yes.....

So we get it installed, and I go to put something on that night in the basement and I can't get on. After hour+ on just service, we found out that the 4 TVs ALWAYS INCLUDED the main box...so it was really the main box and 3 other TVs.   GRRRRRRRRR!!!!  So we worked it out that we are switching out the basement TV box for a regular Genie, not the mini. We can't set the DVR from there but we can watch and DVR'ed shows there, so its fine. That TV is used the least.

I realized why I hate changing ####

Sure. But the issue is they would give the new customers these great offers and then the customers that had been with them forever just keeping seeing their bills increase. The whole thing is a game. Would I really cancel DirecTV? I dunno, maybe. But why not try and call and see if I can get a better deal by calling and negotiating. Were they losing money on the deals? Probably not.

I think they're done playing ball, AT&T is now fully integrated, this isn't how they do things.
Maybe so, but after the 2 years of promo pricing and without the NFL package, which I wont actually pay for, cable actually turns out to be cheaper and the programming is the same.

I really wouldn't have a problem going back.

I've only had DirecTV in my current apartment. Getting cable installed is a headache. Plus I have a whole surround sound system hooked up and would have to disconnect everything, move the unit, then move everything back... Such a headache, otherwise I think I'd switch at this point.

Hopefully the 49ers will be worth watching again in 2-3 years and I'll switch back for the Sunday Ticket.

looks like some possible good news from the other thread!  I read a few like this but here is one example that was posted yesterday

===============

I called Friday and set a cancellation date of the last day of my billing period (early May). I got a couple of calls from DirecTV but missed both of them. Then this morning I received the GREATDEAL1 e-mail. I just called and was offered $50 off total per month (total would be $68) but no Sunday Ticket (don't want), showtime for 3 months (don't need it), and no gift card. Rep then talked to manager and told me to let them cancel service tonight and he will call me to tomorrow night with a new offer including a gift card for a 12 month commitment and new 4K equipment for a 2 year commitment.

Maybe I am wrong, but the cabling from the outside to the TV's just standard co-ax.

Just plug in cable feed where the direct tv feed goes. all the internal cabling is in place.

I am a Cowboys fan in Jersey, and they get a bunch of national games, plus 2x against the Giants. I can go to the local Hooters to watch the rest.

after reading my the last post above, I remembered our script had a placeholder if you don't receive the email or calls.

Since we know the name of the email "GREATDEAL1", if you don't get the email, call anyway and say you did.  People had luck with that last year.

I'm just going to cancel when we go on vacation for a week.

I might just cancel and have my wife set up an account. I still think there are a few ways to play this. If that works, I'll just let her keep the account for a year, she'll cancel and I'll take it back.

One thing to remember is, if the script works (that is, if a script becomes available like last year) stay on script.  People went off script last year and then wondered why they were getting the good deal.  I SMH everytime I saw that last year.

Pretty simple really.

I did a lot of reading this morning.

It looks like the script is IDENTICAL to last year, down to the name of the email they send.

The only fly in the ointment seems to be consistency.  Some people are getting a new deal, some people are not even when staying on script.  Last year I think we had close to 90% success rate for people who stayed on script.

interesting. I think it got better as the months rolled along last year. Possibly a bit too early right now? I do remember though it was a piece of cake if you just followed the steps.

Mines coming up in June, so Im hoping that the script/deals are well worn in and routine by that time, like last year.

My buddy made the yearly call and ended up getting Sunday Ticket Max and the movie channels.

I just tried the same technique -

She offered me $30 off for 12 months – no movie channels or anything would have brought me down to $74 a month plus tax = $77.00

My bill now is like $73.00

She then tried changing my channels, I said no – set up disconnect for 6/22 when my statement generates.

Hopefully I get a call saying they’ll offer Sunday Ticket max and movie channels like a friend of mine was offered.

I'll call in 3-4 hours saying I got the GreatDeal1 offer - What's that special # again?  Offering the $200 GC like last year?

please let us know if this gets you any where!

As for the special number, this is from last years script.  I have no idea if it still works (let us know about this too!)

If you DO NOT receive the email in a few days, call the 877-250-4624 number anyway and tell them you received the email

Number is no longer in service.  I guess I'll have to call the regular line and mention "GreatDeal1" Are we sure that's an accurate promo code for 2016?

I am only going by what was reported on the other site.  See this post.

At the very worst, just say it was "something like that" if they question you and tell them you deleted the email already.  I doubt they are going to question it.  They are likely to just say "ok here is the deal" or "you are not in the system for this deal yet" and then go from there.

I'm calling back this weekend after my initial call 2 weeks ago. This one will be to set up the cancellation date. My contract expires May 23rd, so that's when I'll have them turn off service.

Email from  directtv@cm.directtv.com

Saying I'm eligible for a free Genie upgrade: call 1-888-255-2175

I don't think this has anything to do with my cancelation date set.

called and asked if there were any updated offers, and she said " I can give your current HD extra pack free for 3 months", and that would save you a whopping $ 5 / month !

I actually laughed.

Told her to leave my cancellation date in place.

When I call back, I'm going to say I got a few missed calls about wanting to keep me with special offers like Sunday Ticket Max and gift card promotions.

Just keep calling until you get what you want.  Sometimes it takes 4-5 calls. each rep has different offers.  They're not all tapped into some uniform system with the same offers.  Never settle!

Pretty sure just setting a date does nothing. You have to play chicken with them and cancel. Once you cancel you get the email. I canceled in the middle of my contract last year, but didn't get a penalty because I re-upped right away.

Just setting a date doesn't work

What do you mean? I called them and set a cancellation date last year. It worked.

Agree this worked for a lot of people the past two years.  Setting a cancel date, puts you on a special date, where they have better offers for you as most people don't even place a cancel date as they TRY to scare you with the sending the boxes back etc and fee's with unpaid balances etc.

Yea, I told them Id pay the cancellation fees (those fees don't hit until you actually get your last bill anyway), send me the boxes, blah blah blah.  Huge game they play, I played right along.  A week before my cancel date I get the email.

Worst case, couple days before your cancel date, call and drop the cancel.

Yup, I still had 6 months on my contract. Told them to turn off my service in 2 weeks. A couple hours later they started calling. You don't have to actually cancel.

I cancelled (really) DTV just last month.  The email that I received was for $100 gift card, two year price guarantee (as long as you bundle with AT&T service), package starts at $50 per month and includes equipment for 4 rooms and HD DVR (lots of fine print).  3 months of movies.  No mention of NFL ST.  The phone number provided is 866-333-4903, and there is not an "offer code" in the email.

I am still not doing it.  Cut the chord, baby!

Called the number above, (855-407-3110) talked about an email I never got.

Offered

 $25 off for 12

$10 off for 12

1 time $40 credit

to put me at $75.92

I declined, he then got nervous as he'd lose out on commission he then went to talk to his higher up (he's already manager)

He told me to disconnect at midnight, he'll call tomorrow at 2:00 PM. Where I'll be a new customer and likely be offered:

$47 off for 12

Visa Gift Card

Sunday Ticket Max

$78.92

Used to paying between $73-76 so I'd be happy if that's the case.

Does seniority matter? I'd assume I go back to one year versus the four I've been with them

Will update tomorrow if they call when they are supposed to. I told him they never call when they say they do.
