Can you negotiate with DirecTV? (2 Viewers)

We were going to add a couple of boxes to our service, and I hate making these kinds of calls, so I was going to have my wife do it. After reading this thread, I guess I'll have to make the call myself. I have a feeling she won't negotiate free Sunday Ticket for me while she's at it.

Bob youre quite tenacious. I think if you called one more time you would have got ST for free. You went about it the right way, though - wear em down by calling multiple times and stick to your script. Next time make that 11th call.
Sorry about all those multiple duplicate posts. I was posting from my iPhone and when I hit "Post", a dialogue box came up saying that there was no internet connection, which was ridiculous since I was on my home wifi. So, I hit it again, and again, and again... Then I fell asleep. Woke up this morning to see if my post made it up, and whaddya know  Anyways, glad I called. I may call again to see what they'll give me if I offer them that I'll enter into another 1-yr contract.

Wife called last week to complain about Viacom issue, and was offered $5 off/month for 3 months or Showtime free for 2 months. She accepted the Showtime deal since she knew Big Brother was starting.

After reading this thread today (Thursday), I called them back and threatened canceling service. I was polite and allowed the female rep (Sonia) to vent. She talked about her mom complaining about not being able to watch Stewart and Colbert, etc. She offered $10 off/month for 3 months. I asked about ST. She offered half price. I asked about RZC only. She put me on hold, then came back and offered me RZC for free. I've never had ST before, so I couldn't push the whole "ST is getting too expensive for us" defense. So I accepted the $10 off/mo for 3 months and free RZC. These are in addition to the Showtime deal, and a few other in-place discounts.
I've had ST every single year I've had DirecTV and gotten it for free the last few years. I call and tell them that I had it the previous year and for some reason I wasn't signed up for auto-renew. No matter what, though, you can simply make the point that you've been a loyal DTV customer for however many years and that you always pay on time (assuming you do) and that you've had premium packages that they've made a great deal of money from and that (I always blame my wife so they think I'm the good guy) your wife's co-workers, both new and old DTV customers, have gotten the ST for free this year and that you do not think this is fair. So, if they do that, then it will go a long way to keeping you a happy and loyal customer.

They'll usually put you on hold for a minute or two and then come back and recite how great you have been and offer you ST for free.

That's how it's worked for me the last couple years. As long as you've been a loyal customer, I think any decent argument can be made for free ST with the above "script."

Longtime customer and I have never negotiated with them before (I'm not a negotiator type). Need a new HD DVR for downstairs. I think it runs about $200. Can I negotiate that in anyway?

TIA.

Yes, I did this earlier this year bought 2 hdtv's got both hd dvrs for free but had to re-up for 2 years. So now under contract for 20 more months or so. Called 2 days ago to complain about the viacom stuff and was given $30 off per month for a year plus redzone channel.

No problem re-upping. I just want the box for free. Help a novice out. Do I just ask for it for free right away?

I told them I could switch to cable and get it all for free. I think right now the first may be free then $200 for a second. It was the second box I had to work for. It took two calls first guy only dropped down to $100 for the second box. Called back a day later and the guy gave them both to me for free.

I am out of contract and will be calling them soon with this ultimatum. Give me all new equipment, mine is all 6+ years old, like you would a new customer, or I'm done. I'll report back. I have negotiated with them many times before, always been successful
New dish. 2 new hd dvr receivers. Ticket for 150. $120 off over the next 2 years. As wel as the $26/month discount already on the bill. :banned: :banned: :banned:
for pick

I didn't have to negotiate anything. HD DVR for free, cinema box for free (something with On Demand). However, paying for install as I am changing some things with my plan. Not sure if I dropped the ball there.

Been a subscriber w/ Sunday Ticket for 6 years, no longer under contract. Just re-upped, amazingly only a 12 month contract. Free Sunday ticket ( the $199 version), but I complained about the lack of red zone channel. He threw in RZ for free too, and gave me $20 per month off my bill for the length of the contract. Well worth the 20 minutes on the phone.

My local FOX station is blacked out, and this is starting to get serious. I need Fox for the Giants games, and other local programming. I cant go the route of NFL Sunday Ticket as the Giants are blacked out in my local market. The Customer Retention rep could care less about my dilemma.

Thoughts on how to approach this?

Why is your local Fox blacked out?

From my understanding it actually falls back to the Fox affiliate, and Directv has declined to pay more to to supply the Fox programming. You ask DTV and they point the finger at Fox. You read the Fox affiliate pointing the finger at DTV. All in all, its about money.

I have mine down to $35/month for this year after recommending/adding a few friends to DTV.

Currently am out of contract, almost 3 years with Directv, have $16.00 in credits with $10 cr expiring on 8/6 with Choice Xtra pkg with HD and 2 HD DVRs.Had my notes all ready and it took 48 minutes total but here's what I ended up with:$20 off per month for 12 months = $240$10 off for 3 months = $30Free Redzone$10 off HBO including HBOgo.com for 3 months (Reg $15.99/mo. for $5.99/mo.)Free Showtime for 6 monthsI can call back after 8/6 to see what else they may have. He offered Sunday Ticket for $100 or Max for $147 and I didn't push because I really only want to try RZ anyway. That's when I asked for "Something for the wife?" HBO. How about Showtime? Yes. Cool guy. BS'd about how my little kids know what's going on with Viacom and how they can't get on Nick Jr on the computer. Also talked about the Game of Thrones books and show and that's when he mentioned watching all episodes on HBOgo.com. :excited:
Some of my credits recently dropped off and I'm going to make another call tonight. I need to research competing offers from Dish for leverage, but I thought I'd see what schtick people are using right now for discounts.

Here's what I got today:One-time $50 creditOne-time $30 credit$10 off HBO for 6 monthsFree Showtime for 6 monthsFree HD for 12 months (-$10/mo)Free Starz for 3 months (8 channels) including Encore (9 channels)Free Sports Pack for 3 months*Free Genie DVR ($299 value) if I commit to a 12-24 month agreement. I passed on this for now but may call back for it if they do 12 months. I already have 2 HD DVRs so the upgrade amounts to about 1/3 more space, PIP and ability to record 5 shows at once. As usual it's definitely worth calling if you haven't looked at your bill since getting the Viacom-hassle discounts before the NFL season last summer/fall.

:goodposting: on the bold. I noticed last month my bill had went up close to $30 because of the discounts that ran out. I'm holding off though for the Sunday Ticket, but I wonder how early in the year I can call and try to get a deal on it?As for the Genie, any idea of what it costs per month? Is it the same as an HD DVR? If so, I may go for that as well when I call.

I was told the only additional charge is +$3 for Whole Home. They told me 2 different things regarding hardware. One person said Genie replaces both DVRs and you get a small communicating module for the second room (can't remember the device name). .

When it sounded like the space on the Genie about equaled the combined space on my 2 DVRs, I said recording 5 shows and PIP is nice but not really worth it IMO to send back 2 HD boxes. Then she said you can keep one DVR plus the Genie and access the shows on both from either room. Makes sense to me but since it differed from what guy #1 said I want to confirm it.

New direct customer here as of December.Got the Genie free as a promo...it replaces any boxes.

I have 2 other small boxers on the other TVs that have access to to all my recordings and every channel. Its great.

But yeah, if you already have the other boxes, not sure it makes sense for you.

Does the hardware cost go down monthly with the genie? I pay 1 x $8 for an HD box and 3 x $5 for the other boxes (but get a $5 hardware credit) so that's $18 a month on the boxes alone.

Just want to say that the directv app is ridiculously awesome. Most of my directv boxes are in a closet in the basement and I use RF remotes to control them. The RF remotes are kind of a pain in the ###....with the app I just sit down with my ipad, pick the reciever I want to control and it works.

Looking into switching from cable and the answer seems to be no. You still need "slave" boxes for the other tvs at $5 a pop.

I'm ready to switch from Cable as well, as they suddenly ended my Triple Play package and my costs skyrocketed. I currently have HD DVRs in two rooms and regular boxes in three other rooms. What can I expect my costs to be if I switch to DirectTV?

Mine had gone up to $105 so I made the call. They upgraded me to Xtra since the package I had was grandfathered, which added some 60 channels (which I'm sure I'll never watch) and lowered the bill to $83/mo. I'll take it.

if you do get satelite be sure to have the dish somewhere you can access it. we get snow here and whenever theres about 4 inch accumulation i need to go out and brush it off the dish.. i feel sorry for the suckers who have it on their roof and just have to watch dvr'd material until the snow melts

I live in Minnesota and have had DTV for over four years. I've never had to brush snow off the dish to get reception.

Yeah, happened Sunday. Mine is on a pole. Lost signal watching the games, asked wife if she lost signal in the bedroom too. Went out with a broom and I was a "hero". Girl I know lost signal as well so I told her she needed to clear the snow off the dish. Way up on the roof so they had to wait until it melted.

Only reason I can think we would and you wouldn't is because the elevation (degrees) of the dish is higher here since we're further south. We're a few degress higher than MN. May be enough to catch more snow.

Could be the angle. I've lived in two different houses in that span and haven't had an issue with either. We've had some serious snow storms this past winter and didn't have a single outage. The dish is relatively vertical.

I want to get a new HD tv to replace an old non-HD set we have. So I called up Directv to get an HD receiver and setup HD programming. She tells me it would be $100 for the receiver. New customers get free equipment leases. I remind her that Dish Network has free equipment leases for new customers. She wouldn't budge...saying my only 2 options were to pay the $100 or to wait until my current 2yr contract is up in 6 month and hopefully they can upgrade for free to keep my business. I told her that 6 month from now I'll take my business elsewhere (although I don't really want to).

I did not ask to speak to her manager, but I will call again.

If you have any old dtv boxes that you own you can offer to return those to them in exchange for the new box. I've returned one of my receivers 3x in exchange for new HD boxes at no cost

did you talk to customer service or retention? When you call and the automated voice asks what you're calling for just say "cancel service". You'll be put to the retention dept and they will take care of you.

Jot got upgraded to HD and Genie for free. Just wanted me under a new two year contract again. Sure, what do I care. I'm never paying Comcast any money ever again so it's not like I'm going anywhere. This genie stuff is cool.
