Can you negotiate with DirecTV? (5 Viewers)

I am going to bend DTV over and pound them into oblivion in the next week or so. My bill jumped form $78 to $93 to $130 in the last 2 months. If I have to, Ill completely cancel and wait for them to call. Ive done this song and dance for years and just havent been feeling it yet this year, but the time is almost here. I want the ST Max, $200 gift card, and silly discounts, and I wont stop until I get it. All of it. :chestpound:
I didn't get the gift card, I accepted immediately on $45 a month and free ST Max. Took two calls.

Decided to log in and check my discounts to see when they expire and see this:

 Current Balance
    - $58    (You have a credit on your account)

Interesting as I haven't made any changes or calls...  :oldunsure:

When looking at your last statement you can see when your deal will expire:

$31 off $74.99 for 12 months (9 of 12)
$10 off $74.99 for 12 months with Auto Bill Pay (9 of 12)
Other Discounts
4.     Save $10 for 12 months (9 of 12)
5.     Save $5 for 24 months (21 of 24)

Looks like come Football season I got some calls to make

ETA.. Looks like they already added Sunday ticket for free to my account, without any phone calls..

I had this on the ST too ...the first lady thought that meant I got it for free this year, the retention lady said that just meant I hadn't been charged yet ...

Yep, really.  What kind of setup do you have right now (i.e. genie or something else).  FWIW, I'm paying $25/month for "advanced receiver service" and another $7/month for each box.
I have the genie in my three season porch (which goes unused for three moths a year, but still does most of the recording).  I have another standard DVR in our main living room.  Then I have a third, standard receiver in our family room, which gets minimal watching and is mainly the kids video game room.  The only other TV in the house without a box is in my bedroom, which does have a BlueRay player that connects to Netflix, so that's primarily what we watch when  we go to bed.

Having the convenience of the wireless genies are nice, b/c it suits what I use them for. Guess it just depends in your situation what deal you get and whether you think it's worth it or not.

Just got done with cancelling.  They tried to keep me.  They did the run around of taking my bill from $112 to $67 but no Sunday Ticket (which I only care about the Red Zone).   Talked about lowering my service level.   She said Sunday Ticket discounts may come up in August/September.

I said no to all of it and proceeded with the cancellation.  Cancellation effective as of today.

Let the games begin!  :-)

Of course, I'm in an all day meeting tomorrow so if they call, they will have to wait until Friday at the very least.   I'll post once I get it resolved.

One last question.....was anyone able to get the Genie on just a one year contract?   Is the benefit is that its wireless so I could put a TV in a room that doesn't have a wired hookup?

I called yesterday. Contract just expired, Premier package. They offered $50 off for year and $27 off for 6 months (discounts for movie channels and sports pack) and one year commitment. I asked for Sunday Ticket and she had to speak with her boss, they countered with half price. I said cover the entire Ticket and we'll do it now. She checked with her boss and said since I had it free last year, they cannot do it free this year. I asked if they could do a gift card, she said no. I set up cancel date for June 30th.

Just made my initial call. Not under contract, have Premier programming package with 3 TVs. All of my discounts from last year expired except for 1 $5 off per month, which has 2 months left. My bill for July would be about $187 per month, no charge due for Sunday Ticket yet.

Called the 800 number and said close account. Talked to agent and said I'm thinking about closing my account at end of next billing cycle in mid-July but had a few questions. Confirmed I'm not under contract and that the $37 per month discount I've had for the past 12 months was expired and not renewing even though it says it is 2 year savings. Also confirmed that billing for Sunday Ticket won't start until my August or Sept. cycle. Told him my bill was too high with all of the previous discounts expiring so he checked to see what discounts he could offer. Immediately got various discounts on movie channels and sports package which add up to $27 per month for 6 months, no change in contract status required. Also offered $30 per month for 24 months with a 2 year contract. Passed on that. I asked about discount for ST and he said nothing was showing but that if I wait until it is about to appear on bill I'd be likely to get an offer.

End result, my bill for next cycle will be $160 per month. I'll probably call back in a week and actually set a cancellation date for end of next cycle and see if they offer me anything better.
Made 2nd call today and ended up with a reasonable, but not great deal. Stated same as last time, wanted to set date to cancel service. Got immediate offer of $50/month discount for 12 months. Combined with the $27/month discounts on movie channels I received a week ago, it gets my bill down to $110/month. Asked about discounts for ST, initially told that it would only be about %20 off. Told him I'd be willing to do a new 1 year contract if I could get a better offer for ST. He stalled and explained that since I had free ST for the last 2 or 3  years it would be difficult to get it free again. Told him he could just set my cancellation date in that case and he came back with half off ST. I'm sure I could have done better if I had gone through with setting cancellation date and hanging up, but that would have required yet another call on my part. So I took the $50/month and half off ST with a new 1 year contract.

Worked out better than I thought it would a few months ago, but not as well as it has in the past (or as well as others have done).

Update == no calls or emails yet.  I am going on a 10 day vacation on Tuesday so I may wait until after then to figure out my next step.

Oh hell no.

Put in a cancellation notice for 2 weeks out and within a day got the email with the retention phone number. Conversation took about 15 minutes. Had to sign up for a new 1 year contract, but got $45 off a month for 12 months and free ST Max. This makes 6 years in a row with free Sunday Ticket.  :pickle:

Good work.

Aftet er I set my cancel date I got calls 5 days in a row. They would never give me that deal. Now it's been a couple weeks and they don't call. Come on DTV call me ..maybe.

Just set a cancellation date. She said there were no offers for me.

For you guys that set a cancellation date and got the offers, were you still under contract? I still have a year left. Last year that didn't mean anything, wondering if this year it does.

Not sure, but technically the contract may read you pay early termination fee of $20 per month ($240 for a whole year?).

Called right back and Derrick said he is going to cancel my DTV service tonight and turn it back on. Then call me tomorrow with "offers". We will see.

I guess it's nothing good I can setup my cancel date for July 14th again.

Turning it back on will do what?

Last year I cancelled at midnight and by 8am had new offers, THEN it was turned back on.

Just took down the DirecTV satellite dish from my roof. Paying $195 per month now for TV/Internet/Phone with SuddenLink.  Waaaay better value, speed and quality than with DirecTV.

I might be saying it wrong. He is going to turn it off at midnight. Call me back at 9AM give me offers and turn it back on.

OK, that makes more sense. Exact same thing I did last year. Let us know how it goes
He shoots he scores !!!!

They never called me like they said they would so I called them.   Immediately got offered free ST max $45 off a month 3 months movie channels and $250 gift card.

Nicely done. 2 Year contract?

I did the same thing last year and scored like you did.

Been with DirecTV about 20 years. After an unannounced $33 per month bill increase, I called Retentions to cancel last Friday. The best they would offer me was $10 off per month. Then started a chat, and the best they would do was $20 off per month. Sounds like I should be able to do a lot better than that. Kept a cancellation date of July 15, and will call and try again towards the end of this week.

Wooderson: which exact phone number did you call?

1 (855) 407-3110

but I don't think that maters much.

They were giving me nothing for discounts until my cancelation date happened. I called that morning and got everything in a 10 minute phone call with the first guy I talked to.

Also just a heads up being with them for 20 years doesn't matter. If you are out of contract they will want you back that's it.

I know in early May we were all a little nervous about what we could get but overall it looks like everyone has done pretty well again.

DTV would never have to worry about me cord cutting if I get this every year.

I agree. I like DTV and they won't lose me if I can get the $45 off + ST deal.

Yeah, but the game last year turned into - $XX off and then they added $18 - $20 in higher rates over the year.  I want to pay less than $60 total bill, and get ST and the VISA card dammit.  Which is what I got starting this time last year.

Is this your first year getting all that or did you also get it last year?

Guys, just keep calling back until you get what you want.  Each rep has different things/amounts they can offer. Nothing is uniform with Directv reps.  Eventually you'll get the motherload. Don't know how many times I can say this.

took most of us only 1 phone call. sounds like being out of contract and cancelling is the route to take this year. pretty simple really

People in my area are getting some insane deals when paired with uverse. They finally get it that people aren't gonna pay 120 bucks when a reasonable combo of streaming services for 1/5th that cost do the same thing.

Canceled 7/1.  Waiting for the boxes, haven't heard anything. Will go without cable for 3 more weeks, sign up as a new customer with AT&T and get a 2 year locked in cheap price and gifts.

Kinda like how people had to keep telling you that canceling your service would not effect your DVR recordings. ?

Called last Friday (July 1st) set cancellation date for July 13th. Received email yesterday that they want me to reconsider and have 3 packages listed. I have to call the number @Wooderson posted above.

Will call later and update.

For those that didn't get an email, check your "Promotions" box if you have a gmail email address. That's where mine was
