Can you negotiate with DirecTV? (1 Viewer)

I hate this month and a half where I have no credits.   That said I do not dread making the call, its like a yearly passage to 60 bucks off and free sunday ticket. Plus I only do the call while at work while getting paid.

I noticed the lag when changing channels.  Glad its not just me.

Doesn't matter, I am moving next month and will be going streaming... although probably with Directv Now.  But at least I can check a few options and see what I like best.

I just called to see when I can cancel after the 1 year promo last year which is at the end of August.  Didn't ask to cancel or anything and they gave me an additional $40 a month off for 12 months off what I'm already getting, no commitment.  That's $105 off per month.

What number did you call?

For those that still play the game.  I made the call today to the "Win back" number 866-284-2816 - They told me because I wasn't in "disconnection status" they would have to transfer me to the regular 800 number, where I said cancel service at the prompt.  I explained to the gentleman that quickly figured out I was playing the game, that I called last month, they told me to call when my offers expired to see if I'd get the deal.  He offered $55.00 (I currently have $60 in credits) This would bring my bill back to $85 (3 TV's) I said no thanks, and he seemed angry and asked why as it's only $5 more than what I'm used to.  I told him new people get movies, $200 GC, and Sunday Ticket Max.  He then offered 6 months of HBO/STARZ/Showtime and they'd auto fall off (no calling to cancel) I said no thanks again and he seemed really angry and said well what do you want.  I said take away the movies and give me Sunday Ticket max which is cheaper than the movies.  He said it wasn't in his system and to just call back in late July/ early August.  I said "couldn't I just set my cancelation date for 8/1 and call back end of July to see if the Sunday ticket deal is there?"  He then said "whatever you want to do" very annoyed.  He then said I'd get an email with instructions.

I asked what number I should call and he said you won't get any "Winback" offers until you are ACTUALLY disconnected.  I'm calling his bluff and will call back the 866-284-2816 number in a couple weeks to see if they have offers for me or will just kick me back to customer service and at that point will either take the $55 - 12 month credit or just pay my higher bill for one month and hope Sunday Ticket is an offer soon.

Lately a buch of guys here actually had to disconnect and not just schedule the disconnect to get the offers.

I'm curious what more than the $55 and 6 months of movie's I'd get.  The guy said I already got the $200 Vgc at sign up and that The regular new customer offer is $57.50 off and I'd be getting $55.00

If I have to fully be disconnected for 1 day, I wonder if they'll hit me with any fee's or have to come back to the house?

It was a total pain in the ### last year and I had to do a bunch of BS

I'm sure I will try next month but it's not as easy as it used to be

I think I'm just gonna finally give up on DirecTV, after 15 years or so. The latency when I try to change a channel drives me crazy, and I just don't really watch that much Sunday Ticket anymore. Seems like I can get a good bundling deal with Verizon, as they already do my phone and internet. And I'm so sick and tired of the annual negotiation business.

Will keep you posted about how much they throw my way once I finally do really cancel.

Hell, that happened to me last year.  Now I'm grouped with my internet ...a little worried about how hard I'm gonna manage this disconnect/new customer connect and still keep my internet service on.

Same, I hope I don't have cancel for a day because it likely will create some sort of mess up or fee's somewhere.  I hope I can just call the winback number a few days before "shut-off" and they can see it's "scheduled" for shut-off and offer the better deals.  I'll take the $55 for 12 months, just rather have Sunday Ticket Max (really just the Redzone) I wish they offered it as a stand-alone, I'd just buy it for $5-10 a month like Verizon offers.

couple years ago I did the disconnect and its just them turning it back on, no fees or house visits, everything on the dvr was there.   Mine was off for about three days before I called for the deal (I was out of town so I didn't care, boxes for return were sitting there when I got home)

My DVR died and they overnighted a new one to me for free. Also bill just went up again on DTV and Internet.  I am slowly working on cutting the cord so I didn't want to play the game of cancelling and trying or getting into a long contract.

I have the antenna/Amazon FireTV/Netflix all ready.  Need to run some coax cable for the antenna to get all the tvs (wife likes a local morning news show thats not yet on any streaming.  KTLA 5). So my plan was to cut my service down from Premier to one of the lower ones as I figure out what streaming service works best (Sling, DTV Now, etc).  Also needed to adjust the internet speed since i had the 18 mbps package and will need more for streaming.

Called to activate my new box and had them switch me to retention just to see whats up.

They upgraded me to 45 mbps for $30/mo and it stays there as long as I have DTV.  Was paying $44 (which just went up to $57) for 18 mbps.

They also gave me $60 off my DTV package for 1 year.  The new price is basically what I would have been at if I reduced my package to the xtra or other similar package, but now I get to keep all the movie channels.

No contract.

I am ok with this for now while I get the cord cut....
So I am moving into an Apt and we sold the house.  Cancelled DTV the other day effective Sunday.  Called today to cancel internet services.  Was told I have a $135 early termination fee on the internet.  Told her no, I am not under any contract and and there should be no fees.  She said she would note it but I would have to check the final bill and then call in if they charged me.  What a waste of time.

FYI, switched to Spectrum internet.  Called to set that up and they told me next Thursday since I need the tech to come out.  Just as I finish cancelling AT&T and being told about the fee, I get a call back from Spectrum saying they can move up the install to Monday.  Nice.  They also said I am in their new expanded area that should get me 200-300 mbps and not just the 100 advertised.  Total $44.95.  NO CONTRACT.  Faster and less expensive.

In the apt I'll be streaming so the faster speeds will be nice and no contracts to argue over.

Same thing happened to us. We had  DTV for 8 years and 12.5 out of 13. The only time we didn't have it was 6 months while we moved in with relatives because we couldn't get into the new house. So we when we moved about 3 years ago we decided to cut the cable and go fire TV and stream sports. They tried to tell us we owed like 150 dollars for cutting the internet and DTV early.

So I had to come in here and post and give Direct TV props....I made “the call” this morning....had to mentally prepare myself as I dread it, last summer it was probbaly a total of 6 hours over the course of 3 phone calls to get it right after the bill didn’t indicate what was agreed upon, etc.....couple cups of coffee, walked around admiring my freshly cut grass....

Have gotten the Ticket a few times for free in the past and for half of the following year, etc....I don’t mind actually paying something for the Ticket as it is a pretty cool option...anyway wife was cool with paying the half price fee for 6 months and then normal fee after that...so thats what I was working with...it “worked” last year with the credits they gave etc...which was about $40 a month for 12 months...

so called the number that was listed earlier in this thread...a guy named Teagan actually answered the phone on about 5th ring... I din’t have to be on hold, push a bunch of other numbers saying what I wanted, etc...was short and sweet with Teagan told him I knew my $40 in credits were coming off soon (next month) and I wanted to see what they can do and I also wanted to get the ticket again but wanted to keep my bill around the same as it was last year...he thanked me for being a long time customer and almost before I could stop talking he said here’s what I can do for you...

$60 credit for 12 months

$12.25 credit a month off of Sunday Ticket

free HBO and Cinemax for 6 months

in the long run.....my bill will be less each month....which is gravy...I was cool with it being the same

I said thank you...you are awesome...told Teagan how much I appreciated this not being a nightmare and how good of a job he did...asked if there was someway I could acknowledge him specifically so he could “get a raise or something”....hahahha, etc...asked if I could fill out a survey or something...he said I might get one but they are not supposed to encourage us to give them props etc....he asked if there was anything else I needed, asked him a couple questions about the Everywhere option and about if my daughter could access our service at her college location, etc....to watch our TV and the ticket...helped me with that and then said hey do you have dog and does it watch TV?...I can give you a free month of Dog TV if you want...I guess there are some dogs that actually watch TV.....

what I learned?...I know people may get better deals, etc...and I’m ok with that, I’m happy with what I got....but that phone number was pretty bomb...I feel I got lucky with a good rep....and I think sometimes being polite and giving the person on the other end of the line a little sugar instead of venom and “threatening to cancel” can actually be a decent approach...I’m happy and it took about 20 minutes...

Just ask.  Last year I had a deal with our local cable company in place and called to cancel DTV.  I was ready to move.  Dude asked why, I told him, and said "If you can beat their deal I'll stay."  He matched price and asked what else I needed and I said "The Ticket."  He couldn't do free, but I said if you can do Redzone I'll stay.  I got Redzone included, with no NFL Ticket.  So it can be done.  You just have to ask.

What number was it?

Called a month or so ago to cancel Sunday Ticket so I wouldn't be charged. They assured me they took care of it. Followed up via chat the next day because it still showed on my online account as a service. Chat rep again assur d me they could see the request to remove it and I would not be charged. Get my bill a few days ago and sure enough they charge me for it. This company continues to not follow through on their customers requests. Last year I spent 6 plus hours on various phone calls trying to get them to honor what they offered to me, finally getting most of it. I dread the call this year. One more month or credits left. If I didn't need the Ticket it would be much easier to walk away. I like the service overall, just the stupid games and not following thru with promises is annoying as $@$#_#.

I just called the 8664442168 number and it was great.

Was on hold for less than a minute, Sam took my call, asked if I had ATT(I don't), and then simply pulled up the promotions page and offered me a flat $60 off a month for 12 months, no contract needed.

I was very happy. :)

Total call time was probably 7 minutes from start to finish.

What is Sunday Ticket max a month these days?  I got every offer you did $60, Free HBO, Starz, Cinemax for 6 months, but didn't get the discount on Sunday Ticket Max. I still plan on calling back closer to my "disconnect date" of 8/1 - He seemed to think that it might be free late August.

I did not get Sunday Ticket Max....just Sunday Ticket...and I got $12.25 off a month for the 6 months I have to pay for the Ticket....it looks like if I wanted to upgrade to Sunday Ticket Max it would be an extra $17 dollars a month...

So Sunday Ticket Max has to be like $350-400

Not for me it won't be.  I've been a customer for ~15 years and have never paid anywhere near that.  Hell, there have been years where they basically pay me to get Sunday Ticket Max (through price reductions and below-the-line rebates/discounts).

My latest DTV bill showed up but did not yet include ST.

I think I'm going to play the game for no more than 5 or 10 minutes once I get retention, tell them I'll pay $79 at most all-in and see what they do.  The year after they gave me massive discounts (i.e., paid me around $350 to get ST) I felt bad and just cut it short with an offer to pay $99 for the whole package and they accepted immediately.  I think I left money on the table.

There are no fixed costs here.  If they want $79 from me, they'll agree.  If not, not.

I guess I've never been really good at the whole bluffing to cancel thing, because when push came to shove, the hassle of cancelling and getting another service just isn't worth it and I WANT the Ticket.  Not sure what the point is, but I imagine at some point they say "well sorry that's the best we can do".  I'm not going anywhere and I know it.  As I said I don't mind paying a little extra here or there. Sunday Ticket is a great service.  I know "new customers" get pretty sweet deals and that is frustrating as a long time customer, but as long as they keep working with me a little, I will be happy...especially if it remains as painless as it was this last time.

Exactly I might have to pay 1 large bill to wait a month to get better offers closer to season.

When do you normally make the call to get the Sunday Ticket?  I was told when I called a couple weeks ago, I was too early and they weren't seeing any Sunday Ticket deals.

VPN to Brazil, order from NFL.com for like $125 and forget you ever had to deal with this monopoly.  Includes redzone, replay, pre-season, playoffs, everything, no blackouts.

Been doing it for 4 years and I watch redzone primarily when my team isn't playing.
Thank you.  Is there a real price difference between countries and is there a fast way to see actual costs compared?

There is.  I used to use Turkey, but, then they had implemented some sort of VPN block throughout their country.  As compared to Hong Kong for example these countries are cheaper where NFL isn't as popular.  When signing up each year I just mess around with different countries to see what the cost is at NFL.com, then find the cheapest before actually signing up.  Last couple of years Brazil fit that description.  You'll just have to remember to set your VPN to that country when logging in on Sunday.

Awesome.  Brazil is $150.  Just looked it up.

I wonder how much more you get for actually disconnecting versus the offer of $60 OFF and 6 months of movies currently.
Free ST Max

Free Lifetime HBO and Regional Sports Pack (35 extra sports channels) (for as long as I stay with DTV).

3 months free Cinemax, Starz, Showtime.

$200 Gift Card

Ultimate Package (250+Channels)

Total Direct TV bill $52/month for 12 months.

and besides going without TV for a day, what else does that entail...?...is it really them just flipping the switch and turning you back on...?...and I guess technically you would lose whatever "long time customer" street cred you earned....if that really means anything to them...I wouldn't think they would want their customers to "cancel for a day" every year and then keep loading them up with all the stuff actual real "new" customers get....doesn't the year or two year contract thing have to start coming to play at some point....

Yup.  I was without service for less than one day and got all the above last year

When do you normally make the call to get the Sunday Ticket?  I was told when I called a couple weeks ago, I was too early and they weren't seeing any Sunday Ticket deals.
I call when I get a DTV bill with an absurd Sunday Ticket charge on it.  Wasn't this month, so probably August.

I imagine they have quite the file on me now.  I've never paid for "max" and never had to threaten to cancel.  They usually like to charge the full amount and then take deductions below the line (guess so they can report high revenue numbers to Wall Street  )

I've been an ST subscriber for at least 15 years.  I don't see these as 'deals'  I see it as an annoyance and inconvenience to have to call year after year to walk back the absurd price increase they try to charge.  As I tell them every year, if you'd simply increased the price a few percent every year, you'd be making a lot more off me.  But I guess there are those who get the bigger bill and simply pay it.

I said thank you...you are awesome...told Teagan how much I appreciated this not being a nightmare and how good of a job he did...asked if there was someway I could acknowledge him specifically so he could “get a raise or something”....hahahha, etc...asked if I could fill out a survey or something...he said I might get one but they are not supposed to encourage us to give them props etc....he asked if there was anything else I needed, asked him a couple questions about the Everywhere option and about if my daughter could access our service at her college location, etc....to watch our TV and the ticket...helped me with that and then said hey do you have dog and does it watch TV?...I can give you a free month of Dog TV if you want...I guess there are some dogs that actually watch TV.....

what I learned?...I know people may get better deals, etc...and I’m ok with that, I’m happy with what I got....but that phone number was pretty bomb...I feel I got lucky with a good rep....and I think sometimes being polite and giving the person on the other end of the line a little sugar instead of venom and “threatening to cancel” can actually be a decent approach...I’m happy and it took about 20 minutes...
that might be the first $60 credit i've heard of
