Can you negotiate with DirecTV? (3 Viewers)

About to cancel.  Switching to Youtube TV.  A couple of channels we won't have access to I'll miss, but most everything is there.  Plus we can watch whereever, and whenever, and unlimited DVR all for half the price.  Really sick of their service and drop in customer service quality.

I just cancelled all together effective 1/24.  They called me a few times and sent me an email that I didn't have to return the equipment.

wow, i just hung up with "customer retention"  (got there by calling the 1 800 288 2020 main number listed on my AT&T bill for DirecTv, then after the prompts i said "customer retention"

was on the phone with a human rather quickly, far faster than I planned, within 2 mins.  "Chris" listened as I said I want to bring my bill back near $100 where it always was, until they jack the rates every year and I have to call and complain again.  He said he was ready to wheel and deal then asked some questions about what channels i like.  After a while he said "honestly, you'd be better off calling back in about a week"  Which quite frankly threw my for a loop.   I asked him, why he said my previous credit was still showing on their system and that a week from now it would drop off.   He said when that happens, i'll have far more leverage.   He was offering $40 off today, thinks it will be $120 next Monday for my account.   We shall see.   I thanked him for his candor and that was that.   Quite amazing in hindsight if he's telling the truth.

20+ year DirecTV customer and I called and cancelled for good tonight.  Tired of playing the retention games every year and the prices are just too high to compete with the streaming services.  We've made the switch to YouTube TV and honestly I wish I had cancelled a long time ago.

Hate on it bro!

DirectTV is basically on its deathbed.. The end is near my friends so look elsewhere soon. :bye:
"The two services can still hang on for years"

Not like they're pulling the plug anytime soon.

Crappy internet, and either Comcast or Directv. I'll keep doing that dance for a while yet and keep my Sunday Ticket.
well, based on that story, and others I've read they are going to reduce down to Rural areas that can't get Cable their their "awesome" streaming service..

Either way, less money coming in for DirectTV, means less support.. and one other story stated they believe the DirectTV portion will be sold off to Dish sooner, rather then later..

They probably should have merged the two sat companies years ago like Sirius and XM. Other than ST, they are the same as far as I can tell.

I've had less trouble with satellite TV than my Xfinity internet, so the technology doesn't seem to have any disadvantages over streaming. I agree that the ala carte TV selection is on the surface a more favorable option than the giant buffet of crap you don't want, but it's easy for me to program my channel guide to weed out the 42 religion, 84 Spanish and 4,719 infomercial channels and those companies' employees still have a job.

 🤢pan

ETA How do you I get rid of the stupid green smiley?

Apparently the NFL had the option to opt out with AT&T and didn't:

But things will change in 2022.  This is the best summary of the coming negotiations:

This would also be interesting:

Called today and was told no current promotions.....the operator sort of nudged me when she asked "what will you next step be if we dont have any promotions?" I replied that I would likely cancel. Feels like thats something she wanted to hear. Transferred me to the "loyalty department".

Went from $160 a month to $115 for a year. Not great, but its something I guess.

Check your emails...noted in the NFL draft thread in the pool.

One other posted about it...then I checked my email and got the same thing...Direct offering up NFL Sunday Ticket Max for free.  Without even calling this year.

So my next call will be just to try and lower my bill a little bit and maybe grab some sort of gift card rather than worrying about the ticket.

what is this email about getting the Max for free?  I have never gotten anything like that and I have had the ticket since it started.

Sounds like that will just be turned on for every Ticket subscriber.  I haven't seen the email but will go look in my spam folders.

Got the same email about a month ago and then again last night

When I had mine installed in October the guy told me then that they were on their deathbed. Said they have reduced the number of installers by 2/3 and they still can't keep everyone busy.

I did get the email like I said but weirdly, I didn’t have the ticket last year.
I'm the one who posted about it the Draft thread - I had Sunday Ticket for 10+ years and then like @BroncoFreak_2K3 I finally didn't get it last year

My totally uninformed speculation is that their market research has shown that canceling Sunday Ticket after having it for many years is the gateway drug to canceling DirecTv altogether and so they're throwing this out as bait to keep longtime subscribers from looking around at other options.

I can tell you it's working for me

Possibly so...I also did not have the Ticket last year.

I got tired of wrangling with them last year and took the discounts they were offering without it.

I tried out the NFL Game pass which worked out fine as I typically wasn't watching games live anyway.  About 30 minutes after a game, I pulled up my Apple TV and had the game I wanted.

It worked out ok.

Nice to have free Ticket Max with redzone this year and yeah...they were likely about to lose me as a customer but Ill take the free and this year will just argue about some more discounts.

Called today to cancel.  Bill lowered to 78 dollars a month for a year.   Premium Package.  NFL Sunday Ticket.  Upgraded equipment.   I was seriously thinking about cutting the cord.  We have used Hulu TV these past few days, but the wonky way to change channels didn't make we want to leave.   Maybe it is my smart tv?  But, when Hulu or Netflix finally gets their programming to run a seamless as regular TV I am in.

Got a letter in the mail that I'm getting Sunday Ticket Max for free for no reason this year.
Same here. Had Sunday Ticket for probably 10 years, didn’t get it last year, got a letter in the mail yesterday telling me I’d get it for free this year.

Every 12 months I call and ask for $60/mth off for the next year or I go somewhere else....for 7 years they have obliged, rarely a hassle.  20-30 minute call but worth it.  I ask for $60 because that gets me to about even to the first year new customer deal at Spectrum which I hope to never have to switch too if DTV ever calls the bluff.

I got a call saying I was eligible for a 50% discount on my bill.  It was left as a message so I called up the number to see about this great offer.  I went through the automated system as usual and finally got to a person.  They told me about this great offer and it would be locked in for 2 years and I would get free HBO and Showtime and this great price was also going to include the NFL ticket at no additional charge.  I just had to pay 6 months up front which would come to about $600.  Basically pay through the rest of this  year now and then start my usual payment in Jan 2021.  I thought this was odd however, I could see that DirecTV may want an influx of cash with people cutting the cord and thought it could be ok.

Then here comes the catch.  This offer is only available because they partnered with Ebay so I had to go to any chain store (except Wallmart) and buy $600 of Ebay gift cards to make that first payment.  I laughed and said no thanks and hung up.  Up until that time it was exactly like every other interaction I had had with DirecTV.  The on hold music/info, the automated questions to get an operator.   It was a very well done scam...….up until they wanted Ebay gift cards.

So my question is, why would anybody fall for that?  No real business is going to require you to pay in Ebay gift cards.

Somebody will fall for it

Yes its almost time for the annual dance.  Wonder how it will go this time with the way everything is.

Time to start the dance. My $60/mo. off and free HBO expire July 31. New price would be almost double what I'm paying. Called and cancelled today effective end of the month. Their best offer right now was $40/mo. credit for 6 months. Told them that wasn't enough and still cancel. Will see what happens in ten days.  Conveniently, I got an offer in the mail today from Dish--roughly equivalent package would be about $20/mo. more than what I'm paying now (price locked in for the entire 2-year term) , but I would get 4k equipment and a wireless Joey for on the deck that I don't have now and a $400 Visa card. Thinking that's some leverage for the "retention" call.

Going to call and set up cancellation. Tired of the song and dance. Been trying youtube tv and hulu live the last couple days. Really like YouTube. Even if i get them to get me a credit I'm guaranteed to get a $10 rate increase just because between now and the end of the contract. Always seems to happen.

Let me take a wild shot at interpreting:

HE IS GOING TO SET UP CANCELLATION .

HE HAS TRIED YOUTUBETV AND HULU BUT LIKES YOUTUBETV BETTER.

EVEN IF HE CAN TALK DIRECTV INTO A CREDIT,  THEY'LL INCREASE HIS BILL 10 DOLLARS A MONTH BEFORE THE CONTRACT IS UP. IT ALWAYS SEEMS TO HAPPEN.

I hope that clears things up.

  Last year I got a $60/mo. credit for a one-year contract (plus all the extras like free HBO for the year and a Visa card rebate). No price increase (until next week after the year expires, which is why I cancelled and started the process again).

Neither. Just used the chat over the website
Started similar here this year.  Gave it a shot...said if they gave me close to what I wanted Id just take it...ends up being about the price of any of the cable cutters and after a brief chat the lady said she could not help and could one of their loyalty people call me back.  Person did...after a few minutes of the "oh Im not sure what I can find lately....ooh, Im so excited I have not seen this deal in a long time" she came up with what amounts to 65 or so off (a certain amount off of Choice a certain amount off for receiver credits).  So paying about $65-70 per month for DTV Choice, and already had an email this spring that they were giving me ST Max for the year for free).  So yeah I took it without needing to set up cancellation and deal with anymore hassle.  Whole thing took about 45 minutes between chat and call and then making sure everything went through.  And half of that was the chat person back and forth verifying my account and getting the initial robot chat to figure out that I wanted to speak with someone.

That was clear as day in my head as I was posting that last night. There may or may not have been some bourbon contributing to the cohesiveness though.

Thanks for translating that for me.

My bill went from $70 to $79 and some change after a general rate increase of the packages around the first of the year.

My bill has never stayed the same for an entire year. There is always some fee or rate increase that is somehow NOT a violation of the contract.

I had a pretty similar deal the last year. I called and set up the cancellation for the 3rd, which is when all the discounts expire. I was offered the $40 off for 6 months, but that's just not enough. What's your plan for trying to get a winback offer?

That's the same thing they offered me. Going ahead with the cancellation scheduled for July 31. If I haven't heard from them by then, I'll try calling the winback number (presumably the same number I used last year) on Aug. 1 and tell them I'm about to call Dish and accept their offer but thought I'd give Directv a chance to keep me before I do. Maybe lay out the Dish terms and say "what can you do to beat this?"

I'll post my results here to update you.

I've had to be disconnected for over a day the last two years before I got the deal they were giving new customers.
