Car insurance (1 Viewer)

I'm with Amica. They just totaled my car due to hail damage (othewise it's fine). Their offer was very fair. I questioned one item on it and they gave me a very reasonable answer. I am selling the car to my daughter for the difference between keeping possession and turning the car over to them.
Update: After the hail claims (mine and my wife's both got hit), they jacked my rate to over $1,000 PER MONTH.

I am now with Progressive. I tried to bundle but Flo wasn't having it. Said she wouldn't take my home for any money (thanks a LOT, north Texas). My auto dropped by 50%.

Bump.

Will be getting (inheriting) my first ever car. Ive lived in NYC my entire adult life, so never needed one enough to justify the costs and headaches.

What do I need to know about insurance? I'm talking basics...as if I've never had it or a car before.

Anybody in NY? Any recommendations for carrier?

Funny. Same thing happened to me. Now on progressive and they were the cheapest for a teen driver by far.

I'll second Progressive with teen drivers. Wife and I have SF, and they dropped our oldest when he had his first and only accident. we put the kids on progressive and was good.

I would go to an agent that sells for a few companies and they can steer you in the right direction. A regional carrier may be better than one of the national brands. I prefer an agent over haggling on the phone from a call center also.

What a load of crap. It was a natural accident. This is the whole reason you have insurance in the first place.

They can **** off.

Brutal buddy. Just horrible. Few years ago we sat down with those people that find you insurance and bundled EVERYTHING. House, cars etc. definitely the cheapest. Insurance is such a sick game. Hate it.

Ok...what kind if insurance should i get.

This is an occasional/weekend car at most. Driving to my sons college 2 hours away, to daughters tennis tourneys all around an hour or so away, summer week in MD 4.5 hrs away with daily driving in that week. I suppose occadional weekend away too.

For that kind of usage, What do i need?

Who should i get it from?

Whats typical price?

This is why I would talk to an agent who sells different companies. They would know which one would fit your needs best. Hint, it isn’t always the biggest names either.

I wouldn’t have a clue on what insurance in the NYC area would cost. I do know my state (Michigan) is the most expensive.

Insurance rates in each state is rather fluid. Some companies exiting a market vs others that offer aggressive rates to increase market share. We were surprised our agent (who handles many companies) found Progressive for best rates a couple years ago and our rates keep going down each year ( loyalty plus no accidents). Actually been satisfied with Flo and the gang.

Auto kept getting jacked up every year so shopped around and landed on Progressive for about 40% reduction. I did sign up for the snapshot thing that monitors your driving. I'm sure they selling my data or something but everybody else is anyway  I work from home full time and drive very little and according to their tracker thing I hopefully should be in line for an even bigger discount in a few months.
