Can you expand on tihs a little? What happened? How long did it last? How was it broken up?
Steve was walking past Ken on the sideline. Ken said something and Steve just lost his freakin mind. Ken never saw it coming and it was over in less than 20 seconds. Broken up by Pep and a few coaches. Fox said Steve will have an excused absense from this afternoons practice.

He prolly called him a "butthole" per Rome

My favorite part of this is how Smith felt bad so he went over and hugged Lucas.

Yea, that'll make it all better.

:hey:

But don't mess with Steve Smith. It won't be pretty if you do.

Lucas leaves field on cart after fight with WR Smith

Associated Press

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Carolina Panthers cornerback Ken Lucas was carted off the field with an ice pack above his left eye Friday after a fight with teammate Steve Smith.

The melee came while most starters were on the sidelines during a special teams drill at training camp. It was unclear what provoked the fight. Several players and coach John Fox rushed to both players. Fox tried to separate the two, but it took linebacker Jon Beason to pull Smith off Lucas.

Lucas walked to a tent, holding his head while accompanied by a trainer. Smith was then escorted there by receiver Muhsin Muhammad to talk to Lucas. After being treated for several minutes, the Panthers' starting cornerback walked onto a cart and was taken to the locker room. There was no immediate update on the extent of his injuries.

Smith was kicked out of practice and spent several minutes talking to kicker John Kasay on an adjacent field. He later walked into the locker room while practice continued.

Fox said it hasn't been determined if Smith will be suspended.

"We haven't had much time to talk about it," he said. "It will be dealt with internally."

The coach said he had an extended talk with the team after the workout.

"Any time something like that happens you're obviously disappointed," he said. "It's part of football and you deal with it."

A three-time Pro Bowl pick, Smith was had had trouble controlling his temper in the past. He was suspended for a game in 2002 after punching teammate Anthony Bright during a film session.

Smith last year signed a contract extension through the 2012 season that makes him one of the NFL's highest-paid receivers.

"Gangsta"?

Dude is and always will be a complete piece of crap. Anxiously waiting for the day he does this to someone who beats him within an inch of his life.

Or maybe he should hang out with Javon Walker. That way Smith will have a buddy around who enjoys getting the crap kicked out of him.

Man, you guys are right. I should engage in homoerotic hero worship of a guy who beats the crap out of his own teammates for no reason. Thanks for showing me the error of my ways.

Umm, yeah, that's a great response when people are pointing out that your statement was over the top. The problem isn't that you don't like him, it's just the manner in which you described it.Instead of what you wrote, the same point could have been gotten across with just the following:

"Dude is and always will be a complete piece of crap. Anxiously waiting for the day he does this to someone who beats him within an inch of his life."

Thanks for posting this. The Observer is only saying that noone knows what started it. I hope Lucas' eye is gonna be ok.

I doubt it was a sucker punch. And if he said something derogatory he should expected a response - Smith is known for having one of shortest tempers in NFL.. Lucas deserved for being a #######

Why is he a piece of crap? I mean I don't condone the guy hitting another guy but what makes him a POS? I remember him calling out Dwayne Jarret a couple years ago telling him to spend less time talking to reporters and more time in the film room. The guy is a hard worker and makes the most of his small size. Not sure why he is a POS?Not being from the area are there other incidents that I'm not catching in the national press that I'm missing. And calling a guy out as a POS for being violent is one thing. Wishing violence on him kinda puts you two in similar boats...

No. Steve Smith has kept his temper in check over the last several years. He is well liked on the team, he is a family man, and he does a lot for the community. He isn't a thug. I don't know why this incident happened, but his hot headness sure reared it's ugly head today.

A lot of what might happen will depend on how Lucas' eye orbit and cheekbone are. The reports say both were sent to Charlotte, but the team was coming to Charlotte after practice anyway for "fan appreciation day" at the stadium tomorow. It'll be interesting to see if either of them join those workouts.

I’d be pissed if I was a teammate. I have man love as well for Smith but now the rumor is that Lucas has the dreaded orbital fracture to his face and could be done for while. There goes a key defender possibly for some games and Smith should be suspended for 4. Wow so much for the Carolina hype; season could be done before it’s first preseason snap!!

Steve Smith is a real piece of garbage. You can take him out of the 'hood but you can't take the 'hood out of him. Smith sucker punched him--that's the only way he got the best of Lucas for a straight 20 sec. I'm hearing it went down like Michael Westbrook's attack on Stephen Davis.
