Cara Cara Oranges (1 Viewer)

I'm eating one as I write this, my only problem is that they were sold out of them when I went to buy them this weekend so I'm eating the last one I had from last week.

Haven't tried cara cara oranges.  My favorite at this point is the sumo orange.  How does the cara cara compare to that?

Discovered these a few years ago  . We usually only see them through about April; then I'll switch to blood oranges until they go out of season.

Sumos are more like a giant tangerine than a regular orange. They are great for peeling and eating. Cara cara oranges are true oranges, but have a pinkish colored pulp and juice, sorta like a blood orange. We use them for orange juice. I have never peeled and just eaten one, but it would probably be good.

My coworker discovered them recently at a local market. They're pricey but pretty much the best oranges I've ever tasted. A slight notch above organic oranges from the California central valley.

What’s this now?  My wife is hooked, she’ll ####in riot if they go on hiatus

Mandarin oranges.  Not the crap you buy in cans covered in syrup.  Fresh Mandarin oranges are the best.
GTFO

sumo, bro
never heard of it but im sure it pales in comparison

The best store-bought oranges I've ever had are Cara Cara, but the house I bought 3 years ago has a mature navel orange tree and it produces by far the best oranges I've ever eaten in my life and it's not even close.  Have about 50-100 oranges still left on the tree.

Nice. Aside from water, OJ is my favorite beverage.

Quiet with this.  We have been living on Cara Cara's and Fuji apples for years!  Not sure why anyone would eat anything else.  Cotton Candy Grapes is another.

I picked up a bag of cara cara’s at Sam’s Club today because of this thread. Never of heard of them before that. Did we get a ruling on pronunciation as was asked above?

Gonna try one tonight.

I love OJ.  One thing I found in all of my global travels is that no one makes OJ like the USA.  I was in 5 star resorts that had some of the nastiest OJ.  Just terrible.

Thanks, Florida.

I had property in San Diego citrus country years ago. An Avocado grove and some tomato greenhouses were producing income, but the previous owner had planted some stone fruit and 18 citrus trees of all types. I had grapefruit, pomelos, lemons, two types of limes, tangerines, tangelos, and a bunch of oranges. Didn't have Sumos, but had Cara Caras and Limas. They were tied for 2nd. Almost identical taste but with very different looking flesh. Limas are kinda yellow. Grab some if you see them and love Cara Caras.

You'll doubt this here but lemme explain. Old school Cali Valencias were the best. Thing is they have such thin skin and are so juicy, they're always picked early, too hard, and not so sweet for market use. The juicing companies get the good ones even though they look like hell. But yeah, let a Valencia fully ripen and it beats 'em all. Makes the best and most juice by a landslide. Mouthful of sunshine.

Texas grows a red speckled skin orange in the Rio Gande Valley that might be the best of all, but it isn't (or wasn't) allowed out of the state because of the speckles.
