I have read that they are looking for a backup that can start for the first couple of weeks

The news seems to be that it's coming along and he may or not be able to start come the beginning of the season. They are looking for somebody who could possibly start the first weeks if need be. It doesn't appear he's had any setbacks so Bengals nation is keeping its fingers crossed

The Bengals told Ralph Cindrich, Griese's agent, that they are concerned Palmer won't be ready to start the season. Palmer underwent surgery Jan. 10 to replace two knee ligaments (the anterior cruciate and medial collateral, ACL and MCL) and has returned to Cincinnati to continue rehab and meet with coaches. Palmer is believed to be wearing a knee brace and walking without crutches in his street clothes.
