Cowboys trade for Bills QB Matt Cassel

... Dallas traded for Bills quarterback Matt Cassel on Tuesday, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported, according to a source informed for the move. NFL Media's Albert Breer reported that the teams will swap late 2017 draft picks as well.

The news came just minutes after Rapoport reported that the Cowboys promoted Kellen Moore to the active roster from their practice squad.

Cassel spent the entire offseason battling for the starting spot in Buffalo, but was ultimately beaten out by Tyrod Taylor. Cassel went into the summer as the presumptive favorite to take the job, but did not outperform the more versatile and careful Taylor.

There's no telling whether the Cowboys are bringing in Cassel to compete for the starting job while Romo is injured or whether Cassel will act as a reliable backup to Brandon Weeden. While Weeden was been in the Cowboys' system for a longer period of time, Cassel has more experience as a starter in the

NFL, starting 71 games for the Patriots, Chiefs and Vikings.

Cassel is an inexpensive plan B for a team that needed something behind Weeden who may be a better play if Weeden struggles. I don't really see this as anything to shake Weeden's confidence.

Dallas had no other QB's on the roster (excluding practice squad) so they at least needed a back-up. I'm not saying which will be the starter just stating they needed someone.

I think ur right....jerry seems to think weedens got an arm of gold

I would be shocked if Weeden isn't their starter. I think this says more about their QB3 than their QB2. If Weeden were to get hurt our season would really be over. Just need to win 3 out of the next 8 games and we will be fine.

Huge confidence blow for Weeden. Tells you what Dallas thinks of him and K. Moore.
What other choice do they have? Signing some kind of veteran was an absolute must. They have to push for the playoffs. If they were a bad team they could just roll with those 2 guys.

He was the only one. Nothing to do with confidence.

Totally normal to sign or trade for someone.

I don't get the Moore reference.

He's been with the team all of like two weeks. Linehan loves him and today after trying out Josh Johnson, Matt Flynn, and Christian Ponder they decided no no we want Moore and promote him from the PS.

I think that says something right there.

Here 50 of 53 wins in college...that's outstanding.

You guys know they Cowboys didn't have a backup to Weeden, right? This is insurance only.
I thought Kellen Moore was the third QB
He was on the practice squad. I have no idea why he's on the team. One of the local media guys said Moore helped put his bag in the overhead compartment and was legitimately concerned Moore was going to hurt himself. They said he looks more like an equipment guy.

Moore couldn't beat out Dan Orlovsky for a backup role in Detroit. Cassell is a veteran that can take over if Weeden doesn't work out.
I know Moore's history. Steadymobbin mistakingly said that Dallas didn't have a backup to Weeden. So I corrected him. I also think that by rushing out so fast to trade for another QB, the Cowboys have sent a message to Weedon regarding their confidence in him. I do think it was a good move by them. Cassell is much better than Weeden. Just not sure why Dallas didn't have a good backup in place knowing Romo's injury history.

:goodposting:

I am very surprised people think the Cowboys did this so that Cassel can compete with Weeden. The Cowboys did not have a third string QB. The practice squad QB is probably not ready to play if he had to. So they brought in a veteran to play if Weeden gets hurt. Nothing more than that. If they weren't satisfied with Weedon as the back-up, they would have brought in a veteran to compete with him in the off-season. They did not. He is their QB, unless he gets hurt or is absolutely horrible.

Injury History? Romo gets hurt like everyone else. He also plays through it more often than not. It's one of those things he does as a former UDFA.

There's no reason to believe that Cassell wasn't brought in to be anything other than Weedon's backup. With the concussion protocol in effect, we're one play where Brandon stands up sort of shaky to having someone like Randle behind center.

I actually thought Kellen Moore could have some promise, on the order of say a Chase Daniel. Unfortunately I think this is a reflection on him. Sounds like if Weeden got hurt Cassell would come in, not Moore. See AZ 2014 on how bad this QB carousel could get, so good move by the Boys to avoid that.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that "some around the league believe it's only a matter of time" before Matt Cassel supplants Brandon Weeden as the Cowboys' starter.

This isn't a shock at all. The Cowboys have very little confidence in Weeden, no matter that they were saying publicly this past week. The only reason Cassel isn't starting now is because he doesn't know the playbook. Weeden hasn't won a game as a starting quarterback since December 2012. The Cowboys will have to piece this together for the next two months while Tony Romo (clavicle) is out.

Good God, it sounds like it was written by Cassel's agent.

Cassell inactive, Moore active-probably about knowing the offense, too soon to be about ability or such

Seriously, who are "some around the league" and how would they know?

Rotoworld:

Bleacher Report's Jason Cole reports it is "highly likely" QB Matt Cassel is the Cowboys' starter following the Week 6 bye.
Coach Jason Garrett conceded he was considering a quarterback change following the loss to the Patriots, and there has been speculation since Dallas acquired Cassel that Brandon Weeden was just a placeholder. The bye affords a perfect opportunity for Dallas to make the switch. It would be surprising if Cassel is not the starter Week 7 against the Giants.

I've seen plenty of Cassel to know that he's average to subpar. But I can't remember his style. Isn't he a dunker and a dunker with no downfield passing? Will Dez have any value with Cassel?

Rotoworld:

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said the team switched to Matt Cassel because he is more aggressive than Brandon Weeden.

"Weeden was so conservative, he was coached to be conservative to a degree, but he was not taking chances with that ball," Jones said. "Now, we know you can’t make plays if you don’t take some chances. So, we’ll see more of that." Weeden attempted deep passes on just over 10 percent of his throws according to Pro Football Focus, but the Cowboys' lack of receiving talent certainly did not help Weeden make plays. Cassel should get Dez Bryant (foot) back early in his tenure, and Bryant's return will ultimately play a bigger role than his aggressiveness in whatever success Cassel finds.

I think Butler being healthy & starting would help the Cowboys be more aggressive too. No excuses for Weeden but he was sorely lacking deep targets. They finally worked Butler into the gameplan, he caught a deep ball... and he got hurt.

By the time Dez is back, Romo should be back.

Hey Jerry shut the #### up....seriously. I thot weeden hung the moon? Now he was coached to be lame? Whatever

Rotoworld:

A source tells ESPN's Ed Werder that Matt Cassel will start Saturday night, but is "on a short leash."

This doesn't come as a surprise after Kellen Moore got some first-team reps this week. Cassel has held the entire offense back in his six starts, completing 59.2 percent of his passes with a 5:6 TD/INT ratio. The Cowboys will turn to Moore if Cassel's struggles continue against the Jets.
