Cat talk/advice - all meow, all the time (1 Viewer)

the dog passed away this summer. As you can imagine the dog and cat acted like.. well like a dog and a cat. Since the dog passed, the cat now believes he is part dog.. he bring me his bird on a string on a stick to swing for him... and leaves it at my feet in my home office like.. enough work, play with me now. He dragged his bird from the office to the living room at 1 AM when I was still awake for who knows what reason just to play. It is the cutest thing ever. How can I say no?

Anyone have a cat that throws up a lot? We've tried so many different kinds of food and the vet has done everything he can think of but it's like a cycle with her. Eat normally for a week and then barely eat anything the next but throw it up almost every time. Rinse and repeat.

If it's cyclic, it might be a parasite.  It sure was for Mr R when he was a kid.  He had to go to Texas Children's to get a diagnosis.

This guy left me a nice on-carpet barf this morning. Not on the wood floor a foot away...not for him. No chance.

Sometimes a cat just needs some quiet time. Give it a nice box to hide in and come back in a few days. You will both be happy for the experience.

We have 3 cats and one of them never throws up.......but EATS the 2’s throw ups 🤮

with that said, it could also be that your cat doesn’t chew its food enough and swallows it almost whole OR just gobbles it’s food too fast. If that is the case, then it wouldn’t matter what kind of food you provide.
go Google “slow eating cat bowl”. I don’t have experience with them myself but I’m curious if that would also help to solve our throw up problems.

You might be on to something here. After looking into this, it makes sense. Especially since she's an ocicat so she's tall and we bought one of these https://www.catastrophicreations.com/product/legacy-gen-2-climb-track-unfinished-pine-natural-canvas-31-off/ but it used to come with a shelf that had water and food dishes. Looking at their site now they now sell the shelf separately but in their pictures it's very low to the ground so the cats eat from it standing on the ground and not the shelf itself. They way ours is set up she has to stand on the shelf so it's very far down for her to reach.

Thank you, we're going to order something today and hope it works!

Our boy went through the scarf and barf time for a bit. We got one of those self feeder type bowls that really limited his intake of dry. We also feed him a smaller portion of wet food twice a day vs a larger portion just once.

My cat is similar.  I taught him to fetch, so he'll bring me toys when he wants to play.  Sometimes I'll wake up with various cat toys in bed with me because he wants to play while I'm snoozing.

He's an inside cat, but if he ever manages to kill a rodent or lizard or something, there's a good chance I wake up with it in my bed.

This is my grandaugher.  My daughter has taken the pandemic very seriously while away at college, and as a result hasn't had a lot of (if any) social time.  Only 1 in-person class every other week.  This cat has been great for her state of mind.

She's still just a kitten, but I hope she never grows into those ears.  Looking forward to meeting her someday.

Black jaguar doing what they do.

LOL - can relate to that

We just had to put one of our cats down last week.   He was the one that would do this - start the heaving as he walked from kitchen where it would be easy to clean to any of the carpeted areas to barf up whatever.

We can't leave two emojis.  This made me laugh and cry.

It was the right time for a few reasons.  He was pretty sick, so it was time.   I have never dealt with death well, and this was the first time I have been in the room for that procedure and it felt like something that I needed to be apart of.

THIS is our remaining cat, and is my main pet in the house.   I had a Persian when I was in HS that my parents just happened to stumble across at the Humane Society,  and the wife and I had standing no-questions asked agreement that if she came across one through work that I would get another one.  Made this agreement mostly thinking that it wouldn't happen.  Got surprised with a text a couple years ago.

So my 2 year old boy has stomatitis. He was diagnosed back in June of last year.and he had to have 14 of his teeth removed then. The vet warned us that it was probably just a matter of time before all his teeth would need to go, but she didn't want to put him through that then. Well, tomorrow is the day the rest of the 16 or so come out. I am not looking forward to putting him through this, but you could really see the personality change in him over the past few months as the pain has to be terrible. Lots of hiding, biting us and constantly chewing on anything plastic that he can get his little mouth around has been the norm. We are not sure what the future holds for him as far as food--we should get that info tomorrow. The majority of cats that go through this live long lives without problems--so we are crossing our fingers. He is our little guy (only 9 pounds), but he means so much to this family.

The thing that sucks is our pet insurance won't cover a dime of this. The first procedure our vet office told us insurance isn't going to touch it, so we just took their word and paid the $1,500. Prior to this one, i figured I would at least try and file a claim as this surgery is going to be close to $2,000. Sure enough it was denied, because reviewing his medical records, they found some mention of him having gingivitis when he was a little kitty and they believe that could have contributed to the stomatitus--so in other words--a pre-existing condition.

As I have mentioned somewhere earlier in this thread, we got him and his brother as rescue kitties from a terrible hording situation. We lost his brother to FIP early on, but they came from a bad place so it seemed like a good investment to get pet insurance knowing his background. However, i don't see a reason to keep it, if they are only going to cover catastrophic things like getting hit by a car or attacked by a dog, He is strictly an indoor cat, so it just seems like a waste of $40.00 a month.

Anybody else have a cat go through this?

I'm sorry to hear about your kitty.  I remember your mentioning the loss of his brother to FIP.  I'm so glad your little guy has such a wonderful family taking care of him!

I've never had a kitty with this condition.  Sounds very treatable and that you have reason to be optimistic.  I've also never had pet insurance, though I'm currently going through a very expensive process with one of my guys (biopsy!  surgery!  yay!) that makes me wonder if I should.  My cats are always fully indoor, too, which to me reduces the appeal of the insurance.  I have a friend who always gets it for his dogs, though, and has been very pleased with it.  He and his wife train/show agility dogs, so the calculus might be different for them.

Good luck to your little guy.

I played pickleball this morning with a new guy to our courts, he was 70 years old and in great shape. I chatted with him about playing time and he said he was too busy to play much.

"Doing what," I asked?

"Oh, my wife and I run the Citrus County Cat Rescue. We actually have 12 now living in our house." He then rolled up his sleeves and showed me all the scratches on his arms. "I like to play rough with them and they tear me up!"

Then I showed him my scratches from my two badasses who will attack me even while I'm sleeping.

It was like the scene from Jaws where they were comparing scars, "Thresher!"

Forgot about this thread.   The wife finally got her 2 Sphinx kitties last week.   They are super cuddly which helps a bit to overcome their looks.

Pic 1   Pink one is Beaker, the other is Vinny

Pic 2   snuggled together as usual.

Pic 1 - I love their ears.  Pic 2 - they kinda look like giant cat fetuses.

Growing up we had a diabetic cat that had to have all of his teeth pulled. He did great without his teeth. He ate wet food and also dry food that was little kibble. I hope everything goes well with your boy.

I was surprised to learn that our purebred ragdoll cat was selected as cutest pet of the year at out son's college (15,000 kids). The kids submitted a picture of their own pet, then had multiple rounds of voting, and our cat got voted the champion out of all the entries. I was shocked. He's a beautiful cat, but a fan favorite out of thousands of entries? My son took a really good picture, so props to him.

Well, let’s see this gorgeous feline!

There are multiple pics. You have to swipe or click to access them.

The cat is adorable.

I am not going to date a dog, no matter which way I swipe.

Our boy got through his surgery yesterday. It took over 3 hours to complete. He is pretty happy this morning and ate and drank. well. It will be a little adjustment to get used to his new face. Granted he is still beyond swollen, but without the canines, his face is a little more compacted. . We are so glad to have him home. The vet said there is still some areas of inflammation in his throat, so that needs to clear up and never come back because then all this will have been for naught as that means the  stomatitis isn't going away,

He is definitely not one of the more popular cats my vet sees. She always gives him a new nickname on the written home care slip as his little nine pound self gives the staff there quite a hard time.. Last time he was the "spicy habanero kitty." because he just didn't want to cooperate with anything.

I taught my cat to play dead when I point to him with the finger guns and say, "Pkew!".  Cute, but big mistake.   Now he thinks he can just roll around on the floor and get treats.  It was cute at first, but I decided to totally halt the trick for awhile until he learns that showing the belly doesn't mean automatic treats.

Have any of you dealt with over-grooming, fur mowing or skin allergies with your cats?  My bengal, Bruno has always been an over groomer because he likes to keep himself so handsome. haha

However, he's now completely licked all the fur off of his belly and constantly is licking and grooming. I took him to the vet two weeks ago to get the steroid shot depo medrol which seemed to initially help. But he's already back at it. I'm not thrilled about giving him this type of shot any more than 2 to 4 times a year.  My next thought is to give him a drop or two of my cbd tincture and see if that relaxes him or relieves the inflammation of his skin.

Sounds like he has kitty OCD, but it could be a medical issue.  This site seems to have a useful checklist for what to try.

I have a kitty with this issue - completely bare belly from over grooming and stress.  Vet prescribed Valium, but it really knocked her out so I didn’t like that.  My cat sitter swears by CBD oil, so that’s definitely a possibility to try (though I haven’t).  Feliway plug-ins seem to be working for her to reduce her anxiety right now.  Her fur is looking better again.

Just curious if any other cats do this. We don't have any school age kids, but one of our cats is infatuated with watching our neighbors' kids playing outside. He'll sit in the window and stare at them for hours. He's smart enough to know that when he hears the school bus coming down the street in the afternoon, the kids will start playing outdoors again. So wherever he is in the house,  as soon as he hears the school bus, he gallops from whichever floor he is on and jumps in the window to his designated viewing spot. Anyone else with a cat that does anything similar?

My cat is infatuated with garbage trucks. He will come running as soon as he hears one out front.

Mailman? Nope

School bus? Nope

Neighbors leaving their house? Nope

Big garbage truck and he is fascinated with them.

I'll see myself out.

Just wanted to let everyone know that JULY 19-25 is National Adoption Week (and it's kitten season right now)

I had posted earlier in this thread that when the pandemic started, our family volunteered to foster kittens thru a local cat rescue group. We get them at 6 wks old.  At 11 wks, they get fixed & go up for adoption at 12 wks old.  During the pandemic, all of them got adopted w/in a couple of days.  Here are the photo links to them:

Scooby Gang:  https://imgur.com/a/mi5EFQU        Freddie, Shaggy, Daphne
The 100 Gang:  https://imgur.com/a/Dlvr19S         Bellamy, Octavia, Clarke:
Star Wars:   https://imgur.com/VDWpPZq               Luke & Leia

So, here we are again, and back for a 4th time:

Toy Story gang   https://imgur.com/sgf8QEX       Woody, Buzz, Jessie

We actually found someone to adopt Buzz, so this is the first time we'll get to check up on one of fosters.    But for Woody & Jessie, they were dropped off at Petsmart on Saturday morning for the Local Rescue group's Adoption process. We had hoped they would find their forever homes rather quickly, but there were a lot more cats/kittens than normal and as of late Sunday afternoon, they were still there in a cage together.

BTW:   If you are ever thinking of getting a cat/kitten in the future, i highly recommend the fostering experience (thru a local cat rescue organization).  You really get to know each one's personality and then just keep the one you want.
