Catchers: Weak Era (1 Viewer)

I am getting ready for the season, just looking over some names.

Other than Martinez and Martin, there are no uber-studs. Maybe McCann or Ross will step up.

It doesn't seem that long ago when you had Pudge and Piazza at the top, and then decent players like Posada, Kendall, Javy Lopez, Lieberthal, Charles Johnson, and Todd Hundley.

If I can't get Martinez in the 2nd or 3rd round I might wait until almost the end to pick my first catcher.

Funny how fast times change. Joe Mauer was at the top of stud catcher list just a year ago. Now he is forgotten?

I actually think the catching is fairly deep at present compared to years past. The guys you mentioned above kinda sucked actually. Lieberthal, Johnson and Hundley were what, .240 hitters? Kendall could hit for a decent average, but got what about 2-3 hr's per year? And Posada for a majority of his career was a .270 hitter with 20 hr pop...which was decent, but not studlike....and then came 2007

Catcher is always a weak spot and I wait till the very end to fill that spot on my roster. With the way catchers get nicked up and wear down during the season IMO it is better to build depth at other spots than to risk on decent pick on a catcher.

While C may not be super deep, there are several sleepers out there that could be grabbed later. Guys I'm looking at...

Mike Napoli (Angels): 10 HR and 5 SB in only 219 AB last year. He also walked 15% of the time (good for potential runs). Extracts to 23 HR in 500 AB.

Chris Snyder (Arizona): 13 HR in 326 AB and had 40 BB. Extracts to 20 HR in 500 AB.

Kurt Suzuki (Oakland): 7 HR in 213 AB and 24 BB. Extracts to 16 HR in 500 AB.

John Buck (Kansas City): 18 HR in 347 AB and 36 BB. Extracts to 26 HR in 500 AB.

David Ross (Cincinnati): 17 HR in 311 AB and 30 BB. Extracts to 27 HR in 500 AB. Only concern is his inability to make contact otherwise.
