I must be the only football fan that doesn’t think a rookie salary scale is needed.

Its only the top 10 or 15 guys that get these outrageous deals, the rest of the draft picks sign reasonable deals.

The owners and GM’s don’t have anyone to blame but themselves in this situation. They seems to have no problem playing hardball when vets want new deals but they cave into these unproven top rookie picks who haven’t done a thing. Now they want some rule to bail them out.

I voted:

Players get less of the total revenue than they are currently getting

Rookie salary scale

Players losing portions of signing bonus for behavior/jail issues

Expanded reg. season schedule

I just see the owners winning big in the next agreement.

Work stoppage - YES

Players get more - NO

Rookie salary scale - YES

3-year rookie contract max. length - NO

HGH testing - YES

Players losing portions of signing bonus for behavior/jail issues - YES

Expanded reg. season schedule - YES

Major changes to vet. player contracts - YES in that I think vets will make more and rookies will make less

As I see it, there are warring factions beyond just the owners vs. the players. For example: owners vs. owners (big market teams vs. small market teams), players vs. players (superstars vs. most others, franchise tags and big signing bonuses), players vs. agents, owners vs. agents, players vs. rookies, owners vs. rookies, owners vs. commissioner, players vs. commissioner, team player reps vs. interests of all players on a given team, team accounting vs. league accounting vs. player's version of accounting, what counts as "income" and what doesn't, what players are entitled to for licensing revenue, etc.

I certainly hope all this gets ironed out, but from what I have heard, the % chance of there being football next year was in the single digits.

Heard an agent discussing this the other day on Sirius, he brought up similar points. I'll paraphrase but he said things like Jamarcus Russell isn't the poster boy for a salary scale, he is the poster boy for making better draft picks. Also, if teams complain about being saddled with the compensation for paying a top 10 guy, then stop being so lousy you get a high pick. He also said a lot of rookie deals are really beneficial to the team, compare these two contracts and look at the value Jackson brings the Eagles:Bernard Berrian (600+ yards and 4 TDs)- 3/1/2008: Signed a six-year, $43.4 million contract. The deal contains $16 million guaranteed, including a $5 million signing bonus, a first-year roster bonus of $8 million, and a second-year roster bonus of $3 million. 2010: $3.7 million, 2011: $3.9 million, 2012: $6.9 million, 2013: $7.9 million, 2014: Free AgentDesean Jackson (almost 1300 yards and 10 TDs) - Signed for 4 years, $3,058,000 after being drafted in the 2nd round of the 2008 draft. The deal included a 1.353M signing bonus prorated over 4 years. It was an interesting conversation you don't hear anywhere as often as the publicizing of the huge rookie contracts.
