Chad Spann (1 Viewer)

With Mendenhal, Moore, and Dwyer out. Can Chad Spann come in and make a splash? There is absolutely nothing not to like about Spann's game. With Sanders back and teams obviously trying to stop the most explosive receiving core the NFL, can he have some success?

Spann will get limited touches with Redman/Clay to handle most of the carries.I like the film, will be interested to see what he can do in the few carries he'll receive. However, Spann's future is more than likely going to be with another team, not the Steelers (barring a freakish performance in playoffs). This is due to PIT having Mendenhall, Redman, Moore, Dwyer, B. Batch (got injured before season but was pre-season standout), and Clay ahead of Spann.

I agree with Hank. I think the expectation for game one is to see Spann in a small number of packages as purely a runner/receiver. If he succeeds maybe they'll grow the role in small increments. I talked with Spann this weekend I think he realizes this is at worst, a showcase opportunity for the rest of the league and not necessarily sticking with Pittsburgh. I think that's a realistic notion to have.

That said, I think he's good enough to impress and stick. Especially Moore getting old, Batch coming off injury, Dwyer still needing to prove himself as a worker, and Mendy possibly facing PUP to begin the year. That's a lot of iffiness with guys ahead of him.

Agreed. Unless Redman is injured I don't see Spann getting many opportunities against Denver. Hopefully he makes the most of them though...

If Big Ben is at all healthy, there is also a very good chance Pittsburg destroys denver. (Depending on whether God decides to treat this game like Good Friday or Easter Sunday) Could see a lot of Spann in the second half.

I think you're more likely to see Clay then to get some much needed reps to stay in game shape.Moore will probably be ready by the divisional round if Steelers advance, which would reduce Clay's time to 3rd string and effectively make Spann expendable.
