T-Gunz thinks that Hester who was not even the best fullback in the draft taken in the 3rd round will be just as productive as Michael Turner. Mind you Hester will be a FB converted to HB who yes led the SEC LSU Tiger team in rushing yards last year. However, I think he is a 5th round talent at best. Let me say that I do believe that he is a good football player but a 3rd round pick is a little questionable.

I don't think Hester will be as good a runner as Turner. But he might well put up better EOY stats. His versatility should get him more playing time than Turner got. He'll probably get to line up in the same backfield as LT fairly often, which is something the Chargers never did with Turner.

I am not ready to second-guess A.J. on his second pick in any draft just yet. Here are his previous second selections:Drayton FlorenceIgor OlshanskyLuis CastilloMarcus McNeilEric WeddleThe book is still out on half of his recent 3rd rounders, but it looks like a pretty decent crop:Nate KaedingNick HardwickCharlie WhitehurstAnthony WatersBottom line... just assume that A.J. is smarter than you when it comes to evaluating football players.

Original post edited. This is pretty much my view. I trust AJ more than I trust me on Hester. The pick was a surprise, but I'm thinking "OK, if AJ and Norv like this guy, I guess I'm on board. The benefit of the doubt has been earned."

True that AJ has earned the benefit of the doubt. However, none of the picks that were listed in spyz response were asked to change positions and backup the best player in the league at a respective position.

You say he'll be asked to change positions, but he played TB all of last year at LSU on their way to a National Championship. It's not a brand new position for him.

I'm going with no, he will not be as good as Turner. I'm just a schmuck on a football message board and AJ gets paid to do his job and does it very well. Maybe I'm just pissed as an LT owner in one league because I feel I need to waste two roster spots on Hester and Sproles. And then I think that if LT were to go down that it would be a split backfield anyway....

And while he was playing that position he led the team in TDs and posted the ninth best rushing season in the school's history at almost 5 YPC on his way to a spot on the All-SEC team (who I have heard have a pretty decent conference). The guy had monster games in beating Florida, Arkansas, Alabama, and Tennessee.

Two great taste that taste great togetherPeople around here have no love for Hester because he's not flashy, he doesn't have a ton of wiggle, and hey lets face it, he's white. But for one, he's a gamer, if I was a charger fan I would be thrilled to have this guy on the team. He was a guy that LSU rallied around last year, and he answered the call in every way possible. He single handedly delivered the knockout blow (or should I say blows since he had like 5463 4th down conversions on that final drive) to Florida. He's not only a solid and strong runner, but a great blocker, has very nice hands, and can run after the catch (even if it means going through someone). I agree with whoever said before that he will probably be used as an Hback type guy. He'll be used on runs, he'll be used to block, he'll be in on plays with LT much more than Turner, he'll probably line up from a TE spot at times. AJ Smith and Norv Turner have themselves a shiny new swiss army knife, and thats why they traded up to get him

In all fairness, Hester is one of those players that never WOW you with a certain play or in taking over a game. He is the type of player that surprises the heck out of you when you see the stats at the end of the game. You find yourself sitting there saying "Man, was I really watching this game?" In this case, he's not a player you jump head over heels for because there is no WOW to him, but he's a player that quietly goes about his business and gets his job done.

I think it turns into a 60/40 split between Hester and Sproles if something were to happen to LT.

Going into the draft I was pretty high on Thomas as a 7th rounder or UDFA who made some noise, but landing in SD didn't help the cause.
