Charles Clay (1 Viewer)

Bills defense is seriously underrated. That is half the story. But it seems pretty obvious that while Clay is ok to play, his explosion and quickness is dead in the water right now.

I was watching him on a couple of crossing/drag routes in this game and he is 3/4 the player he was last year from what I recall.

Still, in PPR, he held his own last night. Not terrible.

Yah considering he didn't have a catch at halftime, I'll take 8 points in a PPR league. That's basically TE2 numbers and unfortunately that's all I ever get in the league I own him.

Clay has quietly posted very nice back-to-back PPR games. The Jets can't cover TEs a lick, so I'm gonna give him the nod over Kelce.

Rotoworld:

Free agent TE Charles Clay is expected to net $6 million annually.

The Miami Herald's Adam Beasley says that figure would put Clay in "Dennis Pitta/Greg Olsen territory." Though he's unlikely to eclipse Olsen's elite receiving totals, Clay offers much more in the way of versatility and is younger than both players. There should be a robust market for 26-year-old Clay, though ultimately we expect him to stay with Miami.

A source tells the Palm Beach Post it would be "very surprising" if free agent TE Charles Clay isn't back with the Dolphins in 2015.

Clay has been a versatile and reliable asset for the Dolphins over the last two seasons, catching 127 passes for 1,364 yards and nine touchdowns during that span. The Post suggests Sunday's rumor that the division-rival Bills are "taking a hard look" at Clay could be a ploy to raise his asking price. Clay is our No. 3 free agent tight end, behind only Julius Thomas and Jordan Cameron.

Rotoworld:

The Miami Herald's Barry Jackson reports the Dolphins and free agent Charles Clay are "in active negotiations" regarding a new contract.

Clay seems to be the Dolphins' top priority to get re-signed before free agency opens March 10. There's said to be "cautious optimism" that a deal will get done. If Clay reaches the open market, Miami's chances of re-signing him would plummet, as there are reportedly a number of teams ready to chase him. Clay is expected to command $6 million annually. He turned 27 last week.

Rotoworld:

The Denver Post's Mike Klis expects the Broncos to have some interest in free agent Charles Clay.

Julius Thomas is expected to walk in free agency and leave the Broncos for a big-money deal. He's likely looking for $8 million-plus annually, while Clay should slot in around the $6 million range. Clay seems like the better fit for coach Gary Kubiak's offense as a finesse player who can line up at multiple spots.

Clay to Denver would help his dynasty value a smidge.
if he lands in denver this is my top five for 2015

 I'd probably put him #3 above Kelce but in the same tier.
I don't see it. I'm a Clay supporter. Like his ability but I don't see the Broncos using him in that way. Probably WOULD get some of that FB role and maybe his value is higher than what I'm thinking, but I don't think he jumps into the elite category with the move.

Now, if he went to New England and played out the Hernandez role, YES!

in what way? I think he'd be money in PPR. maybe not as much in big play leagues but he could easily fill the role Welker was supposed to have - short range, move the chains guy while DT and Sanders play deep.

I just think the Broncos are changing and I admit, I may be reading tea leaves that aren't there but I think John Elway has a frame of mind where he knows what changed when he went from being a statistical pinball machine in his own career with zero championships to a 2 time SB champ.

I think he will put that mindset into the Broncos this year even more than before because 1)He's been there a few years and the urgency is creeping in and 2)he truly sees the window of opportunity shutting in Manning's career.

I think that means this method of scattering the ball around 55+ times a game is fading and, as that happens, Thomas is THE feature point. Kubiak teams DO have a way of making the TE that defacto #2 receiver in a lot of ways but if the running game is strong (and it looks like it could be), I think it just changes this year.

Nothing against Clay. I like him a LOT (more than most, likely) as a talent. I just think his best opportunity at big time FF relevance is on a different team. I know that looks weird on the surface but he needs to go to New England or a team that would just give him a lot of volume.

Miami just Transition Tagged Clay.

The dream is dead.

Seems dumb to use such a chunk of cap space on a guy they've underutilized to a degree, but maybe they have big plans for him now that they're cutting WR's left and right and Wallace is still on a horrible contract.

Yeah, was going to post they just transition tagged him. He had a really good year in '13. He could still be a top 10 type.

Rotoworld take:

Dolphins assigned the transition tag to TE Charles Clay.
The little-used tag costs $7.071 million, and gives the Dolphins right of first refusal on a player they badly want to keep. Using the transition instead of franchise tag saves the cap-strapped Dolphins $1.27 million. Clay can sign an offer sheet with any of the 31 other teams, but the Dolphins will have the right to match. If they do not, they will receive no compensation if Clay walks. Barring a truly crazy or odious offer from elsewhere, Clay should be back in Miami next season.

Still wouldn't be surprised if another team offers more. Miami could match of course but we'll see.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports free agent TE Charles Clay remains a top target for the Browns.
The Bills are expected to make an aggressive offer for Clay, but the Browns are still in the mix to sign him away from Miami. It's not a good situation for the Dolphins, who are now in danger of losing Clay to a bidding war. The Dolphins have the right to match any offer sheet, but won't receive compensation if Clay signs elsewhere.

Rotoworld:

The Dolphins and transition player Charles Clay are working on a contract extension.
Now that DeMarco Murray has a home in Philly, the offseason drama shifts to Miami where the Dolphins are juggling tight ends. Jordan Cameron visited the Dolphins Thursday but Miami never stopped negotiating with Clay. Buffalo was hoping to overwhelm the Dolphins by giving Clay a huge offer, but Miami can win the upper hand with a long-term extension. This isn't close to being over.

Rotoworld:

Profootballtalk reports the Dolphins do not intend to rescind the transition tag from free agent Charles Clay despite Thursday's signing of Jordan Cameron.

The Dolphins are at least going to give themselves the option to match whatever offer sheet Clay ends up signing. The risk, of course, is that Clay simply ends up signing his $7.071 million tender. It's highly unlikely Clay returns to Miami with Cameron in the fold, but stranger things have happened. Cameron is a pure pass catcher, while Clay is more of a swiss army H-back. The Dolphins could try to keep both and mix and match game plans.

Rotoworld:

NFL Network's Albert Breer says the Dolphins would like to use Jordan Cameron and Charles Clay the same way the Patriots used Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez.

Comparing Cameron and Clay to the unstoppable Hernandez/Gronk tandem is a stretch, but there's nothing wrong with giving Ryan Tannehill as many weapons as possible. Many teams use two-tight end sets, including the Eagles, who paired Zach Ertz and Brent Celek together last season. Similar to the way Philadelphia played keep away from Dallas with DeMarco Murray, the Dolphins may be trying to keep Clay so he won't sign with division rival Buffalo.

The Bills have yet to extend Charles Clay an offer sheet.
Multiple reports expected the Bills to make an offer to Clay on Friday. Buffalo remains the frontrunner to sign him, but will likely need to outbid a long-term extension from the Dolphins. The Browns are also still in the mix to sign Clay.

What an up and down couple of days as a Cameron owner. In Miami, great...paired with Clay, not so much.

i have heard someone on the radio say a possible mystery team could of snuck in to the fold. falcons? ravens? saints?
can the Saints afford him? If they can he makes sense there.

Seems there's a lot of speculation with him including the dolphins signing long term.

Rotoworld:

The Bills are still working on an offer sheet for transition player Charles Clay.
The Bills are trying to structure the deal so that Miami cannot match the offer, but they may have waited too long. With most of Mike Wallace's now off the books, the Dolphins can afford to match almost any offer the Bills put on the table. Clay will likely play his football in Miami next season.

Charles Clay - TE - Dolphins

A source tells the Buffalo News that the Dolphins have "lost patience" and plan to move on from transition player Charles Clay.

The Dolphins are reportedly expecting Clay to sign with Buffalo. The Bills have still yet to extend Clay an offer sheet, but are attempting to structure a deal that Miami won't be able to match. There should be more clarity on Clay's situation in the next 48 hours. The Dolphins saved $9.9 million in cap space by trading Mike Wallace, but can afford to move on from Clay after signing Jordan Cameron.

This must be the most complex offer sheet ever
The Bills effectively have to craft it with a poison pill so that Miami can't match it. I'm guessing that all of the moves the Dolphins have made the last few days have caused the Bills to constantly tinker with the parameters of the deal.

lets just say where ever he goes they plan to utilize him to his fullest because if ti wasnt worth it Bills wouldnt take this much effort.
As much as the Bills QB is capable of at least. Weapons are there - Watkins, Harvin, Woods, Clay - but can anyone get them the ball?

Rotoworld:

A source with knowledge of the situation told the Buffalo News the Bills have a "90 percent chance" of landing Dolphins transition player Charles Clay.
We do wonder if this "source" is Clay's agent, using the Buffalo News to threaten the Dolphins into a higher long-term contract offer. The Bills are reportedly taking their time to devise a deal that the Dolphins would be unable to match. We still feel like this situation isn't predictable enough to make a confident forecast, but the Bills look like the favorites at this point.

Had they just put something out there before Miami started freeing up cap space, it would have been much easier

Yep, Miami clearly has enough funds to afford Clay if they choose to. This is such a silly bluff from Buffalo's perspective. $7mm/year is a lot for Clay.

http://www.buffalonews.com/city-region/if-ryan-gets-his-way-bills-will-acquire-clay-20150317

Rex Ryan wants Charles Clay on his football team. Badly.

That is why, a week after the Buffalo Bills began in earnest the process of acquiring the tight end, they’re still at it.

Clay continues to carry the transition tag the Miami Dolphins applied to him, but a source close to the situation insisted Monday that the Bills’ interest in him has not wavered, and they are going to follow through with plans to sign him to an offer sheet. Once that happens, the Dolphins will have five days to match to retain him or allow him to depart.

The source put the Bills’ chance of landing Clay at “90 percent.”

Ryan has been the driving force in the Bills’ pursuit of Clay, the source said. The Bills’ new coach knows the challenges Clay presented when he was coach of the New York Jets during the multiple times they faced him from 2011 to 2014. Clay, whom the Bills flew to Western New York for three days last week, has 17 career receptions against the Jets for 169 yards and two touchdowns. In Clay’s four-year NFL career, he has 161 receptions for 1,809 yards. The tight end has scored 14 touchdowns.

What’s the holdup making an offer?

The same as it has been since Clay first became a Bills target. The Bills apparently are still studying their own cap numbers and those of the Dolphins to put them in the best possible position of making an offer Miami wouldn’t match.

Bills just restructured LG Kraig Urbik to give them another $1.7M in cap space and Kyle Williams restructured too for a $300K cap savings this year and $1M next year
