Sadly, I think it depends on if the Bears can actually put someone out there who is better...and based on what we've seen to this point, they can't. Webb won't "automatically" be benched for playing bad - simply because they won't put someone out there who is actually worse (I realize - hard to imagine) just to make a point.Do you guys think the coaching staff will bench Webb after another like that, or stick with him all season again no matter what? I don't think Lovie will ever learn a lesson, but I'm still holding out hope that Tice will, after that debacle. What more will it take? Have they decided that Webb will be the starter regardless of how bad he plays? Curious to hear others opinions on this.
Gotta bench Spencer/Webb and bring in Chilo/Williams.
Have to try it. Can't and won't be worse.Interesting concept, put your players in a position to fail rather than a position to succeed in a meaningful game.My only hope is that Tice/Smith decided to see what they had in the o-line against the Packers and game planned to see their weaknesses.
The Bears had so many holes to fill that Emery could only do so much. He did an amazing job in his first year IMO. He brought in an actual WR in Marshall and drafted IMO a very promising Jeffery. He brought back a disgruntled Forte and locked up key backup slots with starting caliber players like Bush and Campbell. He wanted to upgrade the O-line as well but there wasn't much out there and he doesn't seem like the type to overpay for mediocre. There was alot of talk that a new offensive coordinator who knew the strengths and weaknesses of the o-line could maximize their success. Also Cutler was given the ability to audible at the line and there were supposed to be planned roll-outs and bootlegs to take pressure off the o-line. Imagine this, as bad as this line is it's still better than it was last year. I have no doubt Emery will be hunting o-line hard and heavy next year.4) Why the blank have the Bears not addressed their O line? It will not get better by itself. It will implode against every team that has a good rush. This is not a new issue. Drafting Carimi is called a start, not the end.
I agree. O-line and line backers will be the focus this coming off season. Until then we'll make due.'Statcruncher said:The Bears had so many holes to fill that Emery could only do so much. Yeah, and that is my hope. I can't understand what they were trying to do otherwise. Unless they want to increase Matthew's value to the point that the Packers won't re up.'Vector said:Interesting concept, put your players in a position to fail rather than a position to succeed in a meaningful game.'boubucarow said:My only hope is that Tice/Smith decided to see what they had in the o-line against the Packers and game planned to see their weaknesses.
I agree with this. He's done a pretty good job. I've yet to see many rollouts or adjustments at this point, though. Emery was forced to keep Lovie, so I can't pin the coaching problems on him...yet.'Statcruncher said:The Bears had so many holes to fill that Emery could only do so much. I agree that Emery has done a very good job of filling some of the holes the Bears have. What troubles me is that he ignored the line. He either, bought in to the idea that improving the wide receivers and eliminating seven step drops would solve the problem, or he did not evaluate the talent on the line very well. Neither of those conclusions is comforting. He could have signed a free agent guard, or done something to improve this group. I think Rachal was the only free agent he acquired for the offensive line. And they didn't think enough of Rachal to put him in as the starter until Spencer really stunk it up. This may be a lost season because of the weakness of the offensive line. He may go hunting offensive line talent next year but that doesn't help the team this year. If they had been hit by injuries then that is something Emery can't control. But I would like to hear an explanation for why he basically ignored the line this last off-season.'Statcruncher said:The Bears had so many holes to fill that Emery could only do so much. but i do wholeheartly agree that this line is horrible and will be the difference between a first round exit and possible SB representative. actually what makes it worst is i wonder if this will damage cutler to the point where even when the OLine gets improved next year will he just keep chucking it up for grabs becuase he still percieves the rush is coming on or just because of purely the bad habits he is accumulating over the past few years of beatings and bad OLine play?I don't think he ignored it as much as there just weren't many upgrades at those positions available. Yes, he could have addressed it in the draft, but chose to use his pick to help the defense generate QB pressure. That's been a legitimate need as well so I have no problems picking one over the other. He couldn't patch all the holes the first year and I'm glad he was able to accomplish as much as he did given the long list of major issues. After all his work it appears there is still one clear cut critical need left, I have little doubt that If Emery will address it through trade, draft, or offseason.I agree that Emery has done a very good job of filling some of the holes the Bears have. i dont post much around here but its pure comedy to watch flapgreen getting ready to have an internet heart attack everytime he has to mention about the OLinebut i do wholeheartly agree that this line is horrible and will be the difference between a first round exit and possible SB representative. actually what makes it worst is i wonder if this will damage cutler to the point where even when the OLine gets improved next year will he just keep chucking it up for grabs becuase he still percieves the rush is coming on or just because of purely the bad habits he is accumulating over the past few years of beatings and bad OLine play?

OL: After watching practice today, i'm not worried about the OL...seriously. Gabe Carimi looked like a stud in the 1 on 1 drills and looked solid throughout all of practice. He's our starting RT despite Chris Williams getting some time over there today. Webb looked good at LT...I was shocked. I only saw one play all day where he got beat and it was by Julius Peppers(then again Peppers is one of the best DE's in the NFL). RG Lance Louis looks huge...listed at 320. Spencer played better than I thought at LG...i'm cheering for Chilo Rachel/Edwin Williams to break into the starting lineup. Chris Williams got beat bad two plays in a row at RT...then again it was his first day at RT all camp. James Brown looked solid at RT and should make the roster...great UFA pickup. Overall, I feel much better about the OL than I thought entering today.

Nope. There's no excuse for there to ever have an OL this bad. I think Emery made a mistake in listening to Lovie and Tice on this one. I'm sure he's regretting it now. My hope is that it gets Lovie out of here sooner, at least. Are we really giving Emery a pass for not getting an upgrade at probably the most important position? Screw him for thinking Webb was acceptable.Hard to even post about it anymore.

It's all too easy to scream Emery when something bad happens, but what should he have done? He wasn't ignoring the position, there just weren't many options out there in free agency. It's not like Emery hasn't been churning what's out there:September 10, 2012 - Signed OT Jonathan Scott. Are we really giving Emery a pass for not getting an upgrade at probably the most important position? Yes, he could have gone o-line in the draft but he chose to fill another big need with the first round pick. Not calling Shea a HOF'er, but he has about 20% of the Bears sacks so far this year, so it doesn't appear he wasted a pick.
I'm probably a homer but I'm giving Emery a pass for now. There are plenty of games and time left to start crucifying people and throwing blame around. The o-line played decent in the first game and looked like junk in the second. I think it's unanimously agreed upon that the playcalling and scheming for the Green Bay game was terrible. They basically put the o-line in the worst possible position to succeed and left them there all game.
Like flapgreen said I have little doubt Emery was told that the o-line was serviceable, and given a well schemed offensive gameplan, better playcalling, and dominating Bears defense I believe it is. Take away those first two things and they're completely exposed. I'm sure Emery will be taking other people's evaluations with a grain of salt next time.
Nice work and good assesment. I have a real hard time berating Emery when he landed Marshall, Bush and Campbell in FA and Shea and Jeffery in the draft. He can't fix everything at once.He has pretty much made his career out of Matt Birk being good.I'm getting even more pissed off about Webb staying in and Spencer not. This will be your last season, Lovester and "Mr. Ticket Scalper." You're going down with "Webb Nation" and I hope you never get another job. Idiots! You better bench Webb soon. Do you hear me??? Bench him!!!Eta: And let's put this "Mike Tice is an OL guru" to rest. I knew it long ago. Now it's time for everyone else to accept it.
Unfortunately signing a big time FA like Nicks, Grubbs, or Winston probably isn't feasible for Chicago. Depending upon where you look the Bears have about 5.6 million left under the cap. Even if you ignore re-signing current players whose contracts expire in the next couple years (Cutler, Gould, Hester, Jennings, Louis, Melton, Roach, Tillman, Urlacher, Wooten) I don't see how you can sign these guys:Carl Nicks - 9.5 million per year (5/47.5)Ben Grubbs - 7.2 million per year (5/36)Eric Winston - 5.5 million per year (4/22) It's expensive to pay premium dollars for established FA's and not many teams have the cap room to go that route. Don't forget Forte was still holding out so Chicago didn't know how much cash they had to play with when all 3 of those guys were on the market.Chicago is probably going to have to rebuild the o-line via the draft, which is really the correct way to do it anyway. A year ago that statement would have scared the hell out of me. With Emery at the helm I at least have hope. Carimi is a good start IMO, and I'm hopeful James Brown will become an NFL caliber guard. Add a couple of draft picks (one early) and maybe a journeyman FA or two next year and then re-evaluate. It won't be "fixed" next year, but I fully expect the o-line to get better and better every year Emery is here. I trust his talent evaluation and his tireless pursuit of improving every roster slot whenever possible.Btw, Nicks, Grubbs and Winston were all available this year, so that argument is not completely accurate. Those were all huge names that we could've signed, well worth saving our qb IMO. Still a good assessment, nonetheless. Emery couldn't really ignore everything Lovie and Tice said. He had to give them a chance and some say so in who was signed and drafted, if for nothing else but to evaluate their competence.
If they used the vet exception and restructered a couple contracts, they could've easily gotten Grubbs or Winston, but I mostly agree with what you're saying.Unfortunately signing a big time FA like Nicks, Grubbs, or Winston probably isn't feasible for Chicago. Word is that he's improving and should be back soon, but that doesn't mean much. Hard to say.Hey Bearfans,What's the word on Forte? Sounds like he was jogging at practice yesterday which doesn't seem like the kind of thing you do with any ankle sprain, much less the high kind.
Yesyes. Their entire defense is playing well. If you take out the Special teams TD last week, the defense has allowed 21, 16 & 6 - or about just under 15 points/game.D-line looks awesome. Paea making an impact now. Playing together well as a group. Offense looks as putrid as ever. Put up a few points against a horrible D. Look completely out of synch most of the time.

Loved seeing Okoye with a sack today. On paper it looks like this will be an ugly defensive game. Dallas needs to put pressure on Cutler and make him pass when he doesn't want to. The Bears need to stop the run and still be able to apply some pressure on Romo without letting him out of the pocket where he can make plays downfield. I think the Bears are in a tough spot tonight but if they win the turnover battle, and play well on special teams, they could win an ugly game.Anxious to see how Webb and Carimi hold up tonight.

That means the Bears OT's are NOT the worst.the Cardinals' tackles being exposed as the worst position unit in the league.
