HALEY RELIEVED OF DUTIES

By Kansas City Chiefs

Posted 10 minutes ago

The Kansas City Chiefs today announced that Todd Haley has been relieved of his duties as head coach effective immediately.

“This was a difficult decision but one that we feel is best for the future of the Chiefs,” Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said. “Although there have been bright spots at different points this season, we have not made meaningful progress and we felt that it was necessary to make a change. We appreciate Todd’s contributions during his time with the club, and we wish him well in the future.”

The Chiefs were19-27 during Haley’s tenure with the club and claimed the AFC West Division Championship in 2010.

“Todd helped this team in many valuable ways over the past three seasons, and I am thankful for his contributions,” Chiefs General Manager Scott Pioli said. “Unfortunately, we have not been able to establish the kind of consistency we need to continue to build a strong foundation for the future and we believe a change is important at this time.”

The Chiefs will hold a news conference to discuss the announcement later today.

I thought the guy was a terrible coach but is it his fault they lost their star RB, star safety, and starting QB?

wow.....

I guess it was coming eventually....but he makes the playoffs last year....loses his best offensive player (Charles)....best defensive player (Berry)....his starting TE....and his starting QB.....and no hall pass....

guess it may have been more to do with his attitude because many coaches would struggle with those type of losses and trying to implement a game plan for Tyler Sucko....

Next man up on the coaching suicide watch is Raheem Morris. They are going to lose 10 in a row and finish 4-12. The Monday after the final game, he's gone.

Maybe JC can be a feature back now. Odds on him making it 5+ games being an every down back?

Tyler Palko - QB - Chiefs

Chiefs coach Todd Haley  considered benching Tyler Palko in Sunday's blowout loss to the Jets.

However, Haley decided not to play fifth-round rookie Ricky Stanzi with the Chiefs facing a huge deficit in front of a hostile road crowd. Palko's play certainly warranted a benching, as he completed just three passes for 11 yards as the Chiefs fell behind 28-3 going into halftime. In four starts, Palko has now produced two touchdowns compared to eight turnovers. The Chiefs desperately need Kyle Orton (finger) to get healthy if they are to finish the year on a respectable note.

I don't think that they are doing this based off any one thing. He's a schmuck. He isn't winning. This team is worse than when he got there.

This is probably right. And it wouldn't surprise me if Pioli already has someone lined up.

I don't have any issue with Haley being bounced, I thought last year's record was largely a mirage of an insanely easy schedule combined with Charlie Weis' offensive influence. Without Weis, many (myself included) expected a drop off, and it happened.

That said, I do have to ask, why now? Is there someone on staff they really want to take a look at before they have to find the next guy in 2012? And let's be honest, the Chiefs actually shrugged off the loss of three key cogs (Berry, Moeaki and Charles) and were driving toward a possible division title until Cassel got hurt.

Puzzling timing, at the very least.

Feel badly for anyone getting dismissed right before the holidays.

Haley would be a great offensive coordinator for a team with a lot of talent.

He is creative and able to put a talented offensive squad to good use.

Unfortunately his offense has many dependent moving parts that require all aspects to be working together.

The injuries were the cogs that broke the Haley offensive machine.

He could not adjust his offense to maximize the talent he was left with.

The Kansas City Chiefs fired coach Todd Haley on Monday, effective immediately.

The team did not name an interim coach in their statement announcing the move.

"This was a difficult decision but one that we feel is best for the future of the Chiefs," Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said in a statement. "Although there have been bright spots at different points this season, we have not made meaningful progress and we felt that it was necessary to make a change. We appreciate Todd's contributions during his time with the club, and we wish him well in the future."

The Chiefs won the AFC West title last year but have stumbled to a 5-8 record this season. Quarterback Matt Cassel is out for the season with a hand injury and the team's offense has sputtered behind backup QB Tyler Palko.

Kansas City was 19-27 during Haley's tenure.

"Todd helped this team in many valuable ways over the past three seasons, and I am thankful for his contributions," Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli said in the statement. "Unfortunately, we have not been able to establish the kind of consistency we need to continue to build a strong foundation for the future and we believe a change is important at this time."

I agree, but I also think every owner has his breaking point. That team has been through a lot of adversity and the bottom just fell out yesterday. Maybe there was some internal unraveling that no one in the media is privy to. Maybe the players are fed up. I think the Hunt family just had enough and couldn't get through the holidays without heartburn if they didn't make this move now. I think it was more an emotional decision than a rational one.

Good news for Charles dynasty owners
Maybe, maybe not. A new coach may have a different philosophy. Then again, Haley wasn't the one who drafted Charles in the first place, and had a hard time making him his feature back.I'm sure JC's recovery process over the next few months prior to free agency and the draft will go a long way towards the team's confidence in him being the guy.

No dog in this fight but thats a bs move to fire him now with everything that has gone wrong with this season. The dude made the playoffs last year with a high school level defense.

It's not that cut and dry. I'm a diehard Chiefs fan, and have been a Haley supporter for quite some time. But, this was only a matter of time. Look, I understand that it is not Haley's fault that Berry, Moeki, Charles, Cassel (not that he matters) got injured and are on IR. But...For him to go into any season with Tyler Palko as the backup, is mind boggling. The fact that he has not even given Ricky Stanzi a minute of playing time is irresponsibleThe way he handled the pre-season was so backwards and over the top (notible costing his starting TE the season)His refusal to make adjustments at halftime which led to the 5-8 recordKC is on pace for the record of most blowout losses in one seasonIm sorry, but Haley's "offensive genius" that he supposedly brought over from AZ never happened.

i dealt away charles earlier this year after his injury in dynasty.........always leary of 'speed' players after a major injury to their wheels. when a player is totally productive based soley on his incredible burst and that is taken away what are you left with? i know he has pretty good vision to break the long runs but the burst is what gets him thru those cracks or cutback lanes, as a lot of guys see them but can't get thru them intime. MJD had a major(different) prodcedure but he was and is a totally different RB in style.Back to point on Haley, aside from being a major Richard Cranium he was horrible adapting to his players talents. he seems to have that same blind arrogance that Martz has where he thinks his system or way will work players be damned. a lot of examples but the biggest glaring wart to me is Did he or the chiefs brass actually see what type of offense Cassel was excelling in his run filling in for Brady? if the Patriots could alter the offense on the fly from Brady being a picturesque pocket passer to getting Cassel on the move to fit his strengths and make things easier for him why couldn't the chiefs impliment that in a few years? reminds me of shanny retraining Jake Plummer to be a manager.........then to only draft a gunslinger in Cutler

I find it laughable and insulting to my intelligence that these teams are firing only the head coaches when it is the GM's that are a big part of their problems.

DelRio in Jacksonville when Gene Smith is inept and now Haley in KC with Pioli riding the coat tails of Tom Brady. Pioli should be sent packing too.

Ummmm...so would most of us. :unsure:ETA: IMHO, it's very telling that the only people sad in this thread are Raider and Bronco fans. (SD has it's own bad coaching situation to worry about apparently).

McDaniels being rumored. I understand wanting a NE guy, but jeez... I guess he's a better option than Mangini.
KC fans better hope that's just a rumor. How's that STL offense doing with McDaniels? God may have blessed the Tebow decision, but there's still the awful trading record and his other draft pick decisions.

Puzzling timing, at the very least.
I am not a season ticket holder of any team, but I am wondering/guessing that the 2012-2013 renewal campaign begins about now...two HCs (who we knew were dead men walking, but not at 100% fault) get the chop hours from one another??Any ticket holders (of any team) want to chime in to let us know how those campaigns go??

As a Jets fan, I had little issue with Mangini. If you really think about his demise, it had to do more about Favre's streak (which no coach in the NFL would have had the balls to end), than terrible game management. He establishes a nice run game and has a wicked eye for line talent (Mangold, D'Brick, Alex Mack to name a few). I think teams could do worse when they realize Cowher, Fisher and and Gruden do not want to leave their current gigs...Fisher may leave, but my guess is he would go to Miami before KC.

Reports I've heard are that Fisher will definitely be coaching somewhere in the NFL next year.

Yeah, I was probably overly harsh on Mangini in my post. I don't think he did a bad job in Cleveland either, and some Browns fans might wish they kept him over Shurmur. I was more just joking about KC/Pioli limiting search to coaches from the Parcells/Belichick tree. Maybe Weis would have been a better butt for my joke.
